Sonic X-Treme
Platform: Saturn
Publisher: Sega of America
Developer: Sega of America
The Basics
Sonic was to bring himself to the world of 3D graphics, with texture-mapped polys and sprites and a full 360 degrees of movement in the X-Treme version of the game. The plot was pretty simple: Sonic was to defend the Ringsmiths against Dr. Robotnik. New characters within the Saturn game were to be Master Ring Smith and Professor Booboski.

Sonic was to make that leap from 2D, linear side-scrolling action to 3D this time around, or so Sega had planned, offering full freedom of movement around the environments from a third-person, behind-the-Sonic perspective. During the development, Mike Wallis, the game's producer, told former ZD publication Intelligent Gamer that whatever camera function allows players the most freedom and flexibility, would be the one they'd use. At that point, there were about 10 developers on the Sonic team.

Sonic's moves would've stayed somewhat the same as before, utilizing the spinning move and throwing in a few others, such as the "SpinSlash," and "Sonic Streak." New secret areas and power-ups were to be available as well. The four elements of the previous Sonic game that the team hoped to hold on to in Sonic X-Treme were speed, graphics, simple control, and amazing gameplay. According to Sega, multiplayer Sonic was also a "possibility."

WHAT HAPPENED?
The Sonic X-Treme game was put on that damning status of indefinite hold, and then Sega decided to publish an entirely different Sonic title, Sonic R, instead.
Tenka
Platform: Saturn
Publisher: THQ
The Basics
Tenka was a 3D shooter in which you would have suited up as a character named Tenka. Armed to the hilt, Tenka was responsible for fighting his way out of a manufacturing plant filled with bionoids. Psygnosis released Tenka for the PlayStation and planned it for the Saturn as well.

WHAT HAPPENED?

TNN Motorsports Hard Core 4X4 2
Platform: Saturn
Publisher: THQ
The Basics
Hard Core 2 was the planned sequel to the original TNN Motorsports Hard Core 4X4 titles that showed up on the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn.
WHAT HAPPENED?
A THQ rep told us that Hard Core 2 never made it because it looked and played worse than the original. Gremlin, a solid UK developer, built the first one, but a different studio in the US worked on the second one. With the onslaught of off-road games over the past two years, THQ just didn't feel good about this one.
