Beta only a month before full launch??

Smells like a glorified demo to placate those who [rightly] don't think Epic give a whit about game balance, to me...

3 Days != 1 Month. It's also a demo that everybody will be able to play, just people who preorder at GameStop get access to it the Friday before the game comes out.

Makes no sense if you ask me. Give the demo to the people who already preordered your game. Release the demo publicly on the same day as the game releases so that if they like the demo they can't preorder. They can still go out and buy the game I suppose, but at that point I would wager they might as well just wait to buy a used copy.
