Cant get trophies?

All three answers are a bit incomplete. Your problem is that you need the trophy patch to get trophies. To do so, you need to get your PS3 connected up to the internet, then start the game, and the patch info comes up automatically. (There's no alternative way to get the patch.) This updates your game data. After that, you would have to start a new game to begin getting trophies.

This is a pretty un-helpful answer. But if you've only just started, you may want to delete the game data and re-install the game to the hard drive or w/e the central brain of the PS3 Is (It does it automatically). Make sure the trophies are synced to the game!

Make sure you get the latest update. It usually tell you there an update when you start GTA4. Then start a new file.

You probably started your game before you downloaded the update for trophies. if you did. in order to get trophies you have to restart your whole entire game.
