yeah, its kinda disgusting. i take a little solace in the fact that all prior ME DLC has been average at best, though.

why arent you enjoying it, logie? cant say ive ever replayed ME2. reckon enough time would have passed now for me to enjoy it, but i kinda dislike replaying ME. i like leaving my story the way it was the first time around.

I like flirting with Garrus and Thane I just saw this

and it's gonna make my true play though a bit more enjoyable. I'm so looking forward to this, haven't been this excited about a game since Gears 3. Gamestop has screwed up our preorder though and that is really ticking me off.

Ah yes, do have a fair bit of time before The Last Story will be brought here. Hopefully by then I'll be able to get around to playing it.

Fairly uninterested in The Last of Us to be honest, but I'll reserve judgment for when more details and perhaps some gameplay emerge.

To be fair, most of the "exclusive DLC" that makes up the $870 price tag is multiplayer stuff that probably isn't nearly as exclusive as EA would like to admit. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get a marketplace release sometime in the future. It'll seriously hurt those that like a complete experience until then, but I suppose it's a good habit to break with gaming this day and age.

Oh, Garrus and Thane, a delightful sniper duo to have. Mass Effect 2 may have had a barely coherent main story, but I love it for the characters. I would have loved to see these characters grow more, interact with one another more often, and maybe even get some closure. Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 set up some excellent sideplots and characters that are far more memorable than the Reapers themselves. Fight for Earth? Hell no, I'd fight for them.

well said devil. The characters in ME2 really grow on you. I'm even giving Jack a chance in the field. I hope to see them in ME3 sometime, I know we shall see Garrus...at least we had better

*deep breath*... yeah. Mass Effect 3... it seems to play pretty well. Not quite as fluid as Gears, but an improvement. And the music sounds great, as does the presentation... graphics are pretty good.

    *downs another martini*

Multiplayer was much better than I expected, even with the dumb booster pack system and the lack of group matchmaking... pretty straightforward achievements... yeah, a pretty solid game. I'll definitely pick it up sometime.

Logan, I have a ME question for you:

What do you think of Kaiden? A lot of people don't tend to think much of him. Seems to be the same with Jacob, maybe because they're both human males.. which is boring... for guys anyway. Everyone's in agreement that Garrus and Thane are badass, so i was wondering that if you had any interest in Kaiden was it because he was the only male LI in the original game?

Dej, I saw your sig and realized it was you!! I think you were one of the first people I spoke to on the halo board and was a sweetheart to me

As to Kaidan, I just love him. He's like Alistair in Dragon age, he was shy and needed coaxing to finally talk about stuff. After learning about his life I could see where he was coming from. ME2 ticked me off with the whole you know what and in both he's not too committed, ME1 (being together won't affect what we are here for) and ME2 (maybe if you make it out alive I'll see if I can see you). That made me want to cheat.
Jacob just didn't trip my trigger, didn't seem to personable and full of himself. I'm curious to see how committed he is to a relationship in this one. At least Garrus has stayed around for the duration.

So, yeah, there's Kaidan bashing, but if I had to play a male shepard I'd still leave Ashley to burn....even though I know her story, too.

It's nice to hear I left an impression ^_^

Heh, I wonder if Ashley hate from females is as common as Kaiden hate from guys. I do like Kaiden more than I initially did once I learned about his past, though I've yet to save him in any of my 4 playthroughs lol. Since Bioware has promised deeper relationships, and it seems to be true from what I hear, I'll have to get one going where he survives so maybe I'll be able to appreciate him more in ME3.

Well it's a good thing I'm getting my play in now then. My husband let's Kaidan die in each of his plays too. Figures, I don't let Ashley live either. She just grates on me.
I'm up to Tali's then to get the stuff to go into the void. Should make it by Tuesday, but I get so sidetracked by exploring.

Where are you off to, devil?

Knowing how it all goes down, listening to ME3 speculation (particularly about the characters) is... depressing.

Besides that, I would like to get a new incarnation of my ludicrously wordy Halo Story Guide up today or tomorrow. I've held off this long in case we got some info today. It still needs to be properly formatted to GameFAQs' archaic standards.

Well, I guess that's one way to tell us that everyone dies >_>

Not that I want you to elaborate.

^ I wish. Bioware might actually be capable of writing one of those well.

Edited for the sake of it. I'm not giving out spoilers. I'll just say that Bioware's forum has a new rules and regs update. They know what's coming next week.

I'm not going to believe that, I have hope for some sort of happiness in this game. Why does everything have to end crappy now adays? I hope ME3 will break this cycle of depressing endings to games.

I actually prefer tragic endings, as they tend to be more memorable. However, it all depends on the tone and the theme of the story. If a happy ending clashes with a very dark tone in a story, it's incredibly awkward (a la Bioshock's good ending). On the other hand, a bad ending put at the end of an optimistic story (because "bad = deep" isn't much better).

Without saying much, my issue with ME3 has nothing to do with getting a happy ending or not.
  • Feb 29, 2012 4:48 pm GMT

I don't know why people would be upset about ME3 having a tragic ending. I guess everyone likes to live with the false idea that everything always works out in the end.

The Reapers have been around for AT LEAST 37 million years, meaning they've wiped out life around 740 times at the very least (provided that it's every 50,000 years). What makes people think that it's going to be different this time around? Sure, Shephard killed a Reaper, but so did some other species 37 million years ago (thus, the derelict Reaper). That species didn't survive, though.

I'm all for tragic endings as long as they fit the tone of the game. The same thing goes for happy endings. As long as things feel natural, not forced, I'm all for it. A happy ending is actually what I was fearing most about Mass Effect 3. We've been presented with this god-like threat of the Reapers - it would seem silly for there to be a single climactic showdown with them in which all of the current races of the galaxy unite and wipe them out. I don't know what happens in Mass Effect 3, but I certainly hope that it isn't that.

If anything, I expect the victory over the Reapers to be a hollow one, just as it would be if this really happened. I know that some people will argue that video games don't need to directly reflect reality, but I think that's how they can best be enjoyed. Video games, like everything else, encompass the human condition, and when you try to suspend belief too much things just come off as feeling false.

I don't expect the Reapers to end all life just as they've done before. The Mass Effect universe has too much potential for them to just throw everything away. It's unfortuante that Bioware chose to make Star Wars an MMO, as I feel that the Mass Effect universe is a lot more interesting. Star Wars is too juvenile, too elementary in its separation of things. The races - especially what Bioware put in TOR - are all far too humanoid as well. I don't care if I'm a Chiss or a Zabrak or some such; I still look human. On the other hand, who wouldn't love to be a Turian or a Krogan? How about a Geth?

    Oh well. I can dream.

    Apologies for the long post.

On a fairly unrelated note, but you know what else I hate about a lot of modern stories? Forced, ham-fisted symbolism. Symbolism is great when it makes sense and flows organically with the story, but otherwise I'm stuck with a pretentious pile of nonsense.
  • Feb 29, 2012 6:13 pm GMT
@gutsallover: I do believe Bioware has said that there is no ending where the Reapers win because nobody really wants that ending. And certainly not if there are other endings where you succeed. The endings vary in what you lose, not if you lose.

@Mingy: I agree. Personally, I think symbolism works the best when it's seen in retrospect. In any story, I rarely want the writers to outright tell me anything or make something obvious that isn't suppose to be. I believe symbolism, among other things, is best shown when you're told everything you need to know in order for you to make the connection on your own. Obvious symbolism is often unnecessary symbolism, IMO.
