Jump on board this Hawken mech with Peter Brown and Meteor Entertainment's Kurtis Buckmaster for this off-screen gameplay demo straight out of Gamescom 2012.
If Hawken's F2P business model is anything like World of Tanks...
Well, let's just say Adhesive Games would be very, very rich in very short order.
This game looks really fun. F2P games are getting more and more impressive. I'm a little nervous about the F2P/Micro-transaction/P2W model taking over, but these things usually balance themselves out eventually.
@Rippletonz Well i am kinda worried about that too but i think it isn't going to happen. It is just momentaneous, now it's the bee's knees for the gaming community (damn i love saying bee's knees) but soon it will subside. Maybe it won't completely die out but i think it won't overtake the gaming market.
Well, you won't have any say in the matter. None of us will, the consumer no longer determines their market. Capitalism is a swollen beast of an ideology, don't expect that the largest corporations like EA really care what you think. If they decided to go F2P, subsequently their games will adopt that model. Most of the consumers who buy their product already will continue to do so.
@eyehategod420 I get what you're saying, but even companies as big and powerful as EA still need the consumer. Consumers are fickle, and move in large numbers. In the end it really is on us to vote with our dollars. Personally I think F2P would be a terrible business model for a company like EA. They rely on being able to sell massive quantities of games at full price, most of which are pre-ordered or bought on release day. If millions of people are willing to pay 60 bucks for a product they haven't even seen yet, I don't think EA will find it beneficial to start giving out their software licenses for free. Especially a company like them, notorious for shoveling out piles of buggy, generic, incomplete games. 80% of their games wouldn't make a dime because people would try it, laugh, and uninstall without ever looking back.
That's why I I think this will balance out. F2P isn't the best model for all developers/publishers, and it's not the best model for all gamers. but it's a new thing that works for some and I think it will eventually find its place.
In my experience, pay to win is very nearly dead. Keeping things fun or balanced for everyone makes more money I think.
@Jaxith @Rippletonz Ever heard of World of Tanks mate? Pay to win is very very much alive. And it will grow stronger.
@Yossi1007 Mechs don't exactly exist so... what are you basing that on? Once we do build mechs, I don't see why they couldn't be designed to turn around fast. They're mechanical... you can design them to do anything you want.
...somebody kill the tools at Intel that decided to cut Project Offset.
Project Offset was destined to be the greatest Fantasy RPG to grace PCs until Intel **nts cut Project Offset!
that's the opposite of mechwarrior online isn't it? mech warrior is all about the energy and conserving your energy and this is all about frantic shooting and speeding
@6:25 some guy called his Mech german "Schwanzgesicht", meaning "Dickface" in english. Very creative...
It was written in the upper corner while he was editing his mech...are you sure about the meaning ?
LOL then that explains it...it must be the name of his mech
I say that is creative if you ask me :)
Why is everything so frantic, clumsy, & seemingly unrefined? Is this video being played in super fast speed?
@shantd No, just a game that is played with a mouse and keyboard. Seems fine to me.
@arto1223- I dunno, these mechs seem way too fast and maneuverable to me. It has the feel of your standard FPS, only with a mech HUD. Actually, even your standard FPS doesn't play this fast or frantic.
Don't get annoyed, mate. I was just giving my impression as compared to my expectations, and the two didn't line up as I'd hoped. Yes indeed I watched the whole video (and many others), and for a 1st person mech game the style of traversal just seems too fast, clean, & smooth. In other words, if you took your standard 1st person shooter, like say Duke Nukem, and simply threw a mech hud on it, it would almost feel the same while boosting.
I can understand that for a 3rd person mech game, but do be able to zoom about like that with zero impact on turning and maneuverability in general seems like an immersion reducer.
Case in point, scroll to 5:22. The developer asks the player "So does it feel like a mech to you?" and the player flatly answers "no". To be fair, the player goes on to say that this is a good thing, but that's where the judgement call comes in. He likes that it doesn't feel like a mech, and I'm not sure if I do. But hey, until I play the game I won't make a judgement.
@shantd @Steba93 For how long did you watch the video? Did you even pay attention to the screen and what these guys are saying?
He's using his boosters a lot, it's a light fast mech. That's why it goes so fast. He even talks about the fuel indicator of the boosters.
When he doesn't use the boost the mech walks like a.....mech. just watch the damn video.....
@shantd He's also using a light mech with booster jets. I'm sure the medium and heavy mechs feel much slower and more "mechy".
@Steba93- I can appreciate a faster style of mech-play (I'm a fan of the armored core series afterall). It gives us a different change of pace compared to MWO, and I'll definitely be playing both. But watching that video, I'm just not sure they hit the sweet spot. What's the point of piloting a big bad mech if you feel like you're on a motorcycle? I'm hoping that this low-res video is making it seem more accelerated than it really is...
That controller is sweet.
@shantd @arto1223 Well, this was ment to be fast, if you want slower more traditional mech gameplay wait for Mechwarrior online. And there is going to be a sweet ass controller for Hawken that also works for other games because it just plugs in USB port. I don't remember it's name, but just google Hawken Contoller.
this is actually looking better than mech warrior online in the vids i'll have to wait to sdee if i get in the betas
The thing that I don't like is that you don't last long. It's like these mechs have very thin armor. 8-\
@Ladiesman17 how about sticking to WoW or something? this isn't even close to an RPG. just saying....

Look up the definition of ROBOT loser. Read it then come back here. Robots are not PILOTED.
I'm done with this.
FAIL once again. Mech is an abbreviation of the word mechanical. It was used in Sci- Fi Books and table top games before it was even touched by Video Games or Movies. It has also been a term used by the Japanese for PILOTED mechanical Amour /Extensions of ones body NOT a robot. So until you can prove us wrong you have no case. I am more productive than you kid. I play plenty of games on multiple systems and hold a career. I don?t have time to blog and post like your pathetic little self has time to. Since your pathetic self feels you have to get the last word in. I will leave you back to your trolling ways. I will not respond anymore don?t bother replying.
You haven't seen used outside the entertainment industry because you?re shallow and closed minded. You do nothing but, troll articles that you don?t care for. Why not do something more productive? Then again I am tired of wasting my time with you because you will never see the bigger picture of things that go on in life.
Mech is short for mechanical. Not invented by the entertainment industry it's an abbreviation of the word mechanical.
@Gelugon_baat Troll harder! I have better things to do than arguing with you. Have a nice day and study the difference between robots and mechs... then we can talk again. BB
@Gelugon_baat Just shut up, you'r wrong - period. You'r not arguing, you'r trolling.
Ah you always have to argue. A Mech (Slang Term) is a piloted "machine" A robot is a mechanical device that can perform tasks automatically. That is the difference between the 2. Mecha is the Japanese word for Mech . If you knew anything about Japanese culture they do not have many words to describe simpler things that is why you are reading it as "robot" No it's not a game term once again. It is a Sci Fi term that is where the Term came from.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mecha
There actually is a very easy distinction to make between "giant robots" and "mechs," which I'm surprised none of these sci-fi fan boys have pointed out. "Mechs" have pilots. Robots do not. This is not a giant robot game, it is a "mech" game. "Mech" is not a "gaming term", it has nothing to do with hype. It's a distinction between piloted and non-piloted bipedal (usually) robots.
You may not "bite the hype of gaming terms," (whatever that is supposed to mean) and you seem very proud of it for some reason, but you sure have a habit of creating silly debates out of thin air. Basically trolling. Spend some time playing games instead of arguing about them.

@Gelugon_baat @sammoth Well, if you're a grown man/girl, you should really get a life.....seriously.
"So ? "NA NA NA" "sticks fingers in ears" Third grade child. I am doing this because I am a troll brat snot nosed kid.
Yet you have no intrest in this game or any Mech Game . You still have to comment. "AKA: TROLL"
You're the one arguing and more than 2 people have told you that you are WRONG. Yet you still want to prove you're right something you haven't done.
Mecha comes from Sci Fi not gaming. Ironic it has a lot to do with animi, you think you would know that with your avatar.
@Gelugon_baat I agree that it would ephasize the mehcs capabilities, but this is multiplayer game, who wants to play as some war machine when you can play as sweet ass giant mech?
