- The Bottom Line:
- "Grows on you"
There are already a lot of very good survival games out there that will guarantee satisfaction and a sense of achievement on completing them but only a few that will leave a warm mark in a gamer's heart that will keep you playing it all over again and again for the nth time.
I Am Alive (IAA) will definitely etch that in your heart. Its unique and subtle but dramatic presentation will put you in total immersion with the game and brings you to a virtual experience of the not-so-distant apocalyptic dimension.
The game mechanics may be unforgiving for fresh and veteran gamers alike in this genre especially on the emotionally tense combat sequences that utilize the intimidation and decisive response factors. Add in the scarcity of items and ammunition, and you will be surviving your play through as close as the hypothetical end day scenario experience.
But once you get over the learning curve you will notice the game is really quite easy. A couple of play through later you might scold the developers for making it under-challenging if not boring in some levels.
The plot of the game is a mystery that sets the game quite perfectly and have you asking why and how did this apocalypse come to be.
Though the game's graphics feature is somewhat outdated and short of being spectacular, it doesn't distract you away from the atmosphere that the game is conveying.
The sound department is excellent most especially in the voice acts and ambient music. It keeps you tense at all times.
The controls are pretty solid with some occasional glitches that may be quite annoying and, in rare cases, quite infuriating when it finds you in the middle of climbing a 50-story skyscraper or surrounded by predatory thugs.
Overall, the game is quite good and worthy of investment for your gaming pleasure or genre collection that surely will become a classical title. Its 4-hour entertainment might leave you wanting but it will definitely make you yearn more.
I personally played and completed it 5 times already. The last one barely under 2 hours with only 4 seconds to spare and the highest score rating.
I'm glad I am alive to have played this game.
8.5/10

Could have been great, but failed to live up to the idea in so many ways.
