Great article! Keep up the great work, Winifred!
As an aspiring film/video game composer myself, it's great to see Gamespot shedding light on an often overlooked side of this industry. We require more Sound Byte! :D

I'm happy to see more of these articles about some of the more purely artistic elements of video games. I create music for more traditional sources, and I've always thought game music would be quite the challenge - especially as a lot of modern games are (rightly) employing more dynamic music techniques. It isn't just simply about writing a "song" anymore, but creating many pieces that can fit together and be broken down. Awesome breakthrough on Assassins Creed Liberation, that's huge!
@tgwolf I seem to recall you showing up in comments before complaining about M-rated games, without actually understanding the subject. (For instance, I think you appeared in a podcast episode complaining that the makers of Sins of a Solar Empire created M-rated garbage, which is wrong in every possible way.) In any case, Phillips has composed for many types of games, such as The Maw, LittleBigPlanet 2/Vita, Spore Hero, Legends of the Guardians, and Shrek 3. These are about as far from M-rated as you can get. (Every single one of these games is rated E by the ESRB, meaning they are appropriate for gamers of all ages; in fact, the majority of the games Phillips has composed for are E-rated.) Then again, I note several of these games in the article, which leads me to think that your diatribe isn't actually based on, you know, knowing things.
I mean--c'mon dude. Really? Do you actually know what you are talking about? Also, nice show of misogyny there, which lets us know where you stand.
Some of the most iconic soundtracks that i've bought the music for.
congrats to you Mrs Phillips!
keep up the good work :)
Thanks, SaudiFury! And to everyone who has been so supportive, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation. I'm glad you've enjoyed my music, and your encouragement means a lot to me. You make me happy and proud to be a game composer!

Figures, half the comments here are about her picture, and not the content of the article or her great accomplishments.... -_-Congrats Ms. Phillips, your recognition is well-deserved!
I looked into her soulless blank eyes and wondered, "What could be more disturbing?"
When they look back?
As always, I feel so happy when I hear game music composers are more and more getting the recognition they deserve. Congrats on your awards. Ms. Phillips!
Well, it's all been said by the time one reads she composed GoW soundtrack. It's the kind of soundtrack that sends shivers down one's spine. I'm glad she's gettin recognition, for I know it's entirely deserved.
i am downloading Assassin's Creed III: Liberation soundtrake even i did not play it,btw i did not know that she compos GOD ..great woman
I just became aware of Winifred Phillips w/in the last few days. I mentioned that I thought Assassin's Creed III: Liberation was the best soundtrack of the year in the comments of another article on this site, which I wound up looking up to find she composed not only that but another favorite soundtrack this year which was for Little Big Planet PS Vita. The crazy thing is these soundtracks really don't sound all that similar aside from both being excellent, which really speaks to her diverse talents as a composer. Glad to see she's getting some recognition from the industry and the press.
great work.....but she has a crazy "i'm gonna get you sucker!!" look in those pics
