A game with little gameplay is still a game, and it can be a rather great game; a feat which I completely feel Journey has done. If you feel a game can't be great with minimal gameplay, that is quite your opinion.

No, I've said this before but I've enjoyed a few visual novel type games. But in Journey's case, it really feels like it needed more.

I agree with the TC, but not about this game. I have yet to play it, but I'm going to play with an open mind because I am intrigued.

I'm mostly referring to titles like Shadow of the Colossus. Highly rated game for good art design and innovation, but where's the bone structure? You spend 4 hours running to your next destination, solve the puzzle, kill the beast, and repeat. Less is not always more, and I feel we were stripped. SotC is not the game I thought it would be, and games like God of War, which I don't even rate very highly, are what "works of art" should be.

Good level design, vibrant use of colors, but core gameplay of action and adventuring...all while taking down enormous bosses.

If you didn't think Shadow of the Colossus had enough "bone structure," you're going to hate Journey. Personally I think SotC has more than enough gameplay and it's boss fights are very well designed, God of War's fighting system isn't all that well designed IMO.
  • Jan 14, 2013 3:56 pm GMT
Wouldn't it be cool if Journey had some boss fights? I'm not saying adding weapons in the game just like doing certain things like stepping on a button or chirping and activating a shock wave or something like that. It would be more interesting and make the game longer.

Have your own opinion. I don't care about it though.

    Compared to SotC? Yes.

    For one, it's enjoyable.

Art is very subjective, but boy we could not disagree more strongly on what is "enjoyable." I find the God of War games to be forgettable experiences with lame overwraught stories and gameplay as shallow as a puddle. For enjoyable action games you just can't beat games like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry 3, I even liked the recent Lollipop Chainsaw better.

    it's enjoyable
even to watch my bf play the entire story sitting on the couch together
it was a moving experience :3

Journey is the best game I've played in a long time, and certainly deserving of game of the year.

This is the best game I've played in a while...

Heck, to put it frankly, this indie game has done what AAA title, such as FF XIII fails. The thrilling, moving experience... thank you developers for giving me such sublime game

    Oh my.
I'm gonna have to get my rant on.

First, a fact that needs to be lain out on the table- game mechanics and enjoyablility are NOT what makes a game a work of art. In fact, most great works of art are not enjoyable to view. Take El Guernica, for example. It is undisputed art. But its entire message is about war and pain and suffering. If you start smiling while considering topics like these, than I really think you need to get checked out. Game mechanics and how fun it is doesn't affect whether or not it is art. Now, I'm not saying they can't be fun. Many great art games, like Journey, are fun. But art is about the story and the message the game conveys, not the momentary enjoyment you get while holding the controller. Art is what stays with you after.

To be fair, I have heard very good arguments on why God of War is a work of art. But those that contend that have far better reasons to do so. Not the gameplay. Not the action. Those factors made it fun, but that's not why its art. It's the story of Kratos and his character growth (or decay, as it happens to be in this case). It's what the underlying message is about human nature.

In conclusion, don't confuse a good game and a work of art. They are two very different things. While developers may strive to obtain both titles, that's not what always happens.

I haven't chimed in since my original rant and I have to apologize if I upset folks, that wasn't my intent.

As I said in the first post, I enjoyed Journey, it is a great experience.

However, my original point still stands. If something like Journey is GOTY then we might as well get rid of consoles and PCs and just focus on phone and tablet games and I see no point in most of the review sites.

That doesn't make any sense. Its like saying would should stop making Hollywood blockbusters because the lower budget Oscar bait films are the ones that win all the awards.

Journey winning GOTY gives more validation to the smaller budget games, it doesn't discredit AAA gaming world

phone and tablet games are made and marketed for stupid kids who buy thousands of dollars of microtransactions when their parents aren't watching.

just because a low budget indie game gets rave reviews and sales mean that everyone's gonna stop playing madden 20XX and call of duty modern black zombies anytime soon.

I actually think Journey signals something else entirely for videogames. As many mentioned here, a game can be a work of art or contain many parts of art, but very few games are actually MADE to be art. Journey is the latter, and the fact that it got so much recognition from so many people actually signifies something important in an industry that seems to be hitting brick walls in development and budgets.

Journey shows that you don't need to have a massive AAA budget or be a first person shooter to be a popular game. The fact that it got so much recognition from people outside of the tablet/phone game market that you mentioned shows that there are quite a few people that enjoy the game for more than simply being a game. I think that's a good step forward, when even people that don't normally recognize games begin to appreciate them as well. Heck, Journey's soundtrack was even nominated for a grammy.

Is this game GOTY material? Opinions, but I think so. Just because it's such a beautiful and intriguing game. And the fact that it caught so much attention for NOT being a multi-million dollar, massive game company/developer, advertised-to-hell game.

Gee what an absolutely pointless topic. One poster thinks his opinion is definitive, anyone who disagrees is inferior, right?

Here are three very simple points as to why it's completely pointless:

    1) Dogmatic viewpoints regarding entertainment are unimportant and serve no purpose.
    2) Whether a piece of entertainment is enjoyable is 100% subjective.
    3) Why said entertainment is praised and enjoyed or not by individuals is also subjective and abstract. It need not be justified to opposing viewpoints in any way. Why? Because it's unimportant.

I will now leave this topic hoping common sense prevails, because that's what those three points are. If it doesn't, it is ultimately also unimportant. Entertainment doesn't need to be taken so seriously.

Journey is probably the best game I've ever played. When I watched the IGN reveal that this was their game of the year, it made the winners from previous years look like jokes. Someone actually took the medium and did something good with it instead of "how many different ways can you kill a person?" or "how many points can you get?"

You know... there ARE people who think that the medium has already done a lot of good things. Even in the same year Journey was released.
  • Apr 3, 2013 3:14 pm GMT
"how many points can you get" is not something you just dismiss. It's not something that other mediums can offer. The rush of beating a high score or a time attack, of not just playing a perfect game but playing a game perfectly, is part of what's great about the medium.

Making a game rewarding and enjoyable enough to make the player want to do that is just as much of an achievement as Journey is.
