@SlickkWilly - Well I'm older than you and I can't wait to play it. Kickass platforming is awesome whether cute or not
We cooperatively thread our way through Fire Land with Kirby and Prince Fluff.
You might already know that the world Kirby ventures through in Epic Yarn is entirely made of fabric and various types of yarn. As such, objects in the environment can be scrunched, unzipped, and unfolded much like actual cloth to reveal hidden beads and patches to collect. You probably also know that it's one of the most adorable games in recent years. And you probably know that it's a platformer with easy-to-use controls (performed by holding the Wii Remote sideways), but what you probably don't know is that Epic Yarn's cute and cuddly exterior hides an often complex action game that requires skilled teamwork when playing cooperatively with Kirby's ally, Prince Fluff.
Fluff and Kirby have the same abilities. Both can lasso onto enemies and usually turn them into projectiles that they can throw, and both can turn into a variety of different things during the course of standard gameplay. For example, they can turn into parachutes to glide after a jump or transform into a small car to get a quick boost of speed for longer jumps. Additionally, Fluff and Kirby can turn into a weight by pressing down on the D pad--a useful skill for smashing destructible platforms underfoot. The only trouble is, at least when it comes to cooperative play, that both Fluff and Kirby can use these things to interact with each other, which often ends with unintended results. In other words, remember how easy it was to mess with other players in New Super Mario Bros. Wii? It's kind of like that in Kirby's Epic Yarn.
Granted, the intention of the cooperative mode isn't to purposely doom your in-game partner. In fact, with two players, it's a little easier to collect more beads because they all go to one pile and not to individual players, which then makes it easier to earn the required number to earn a badge and advance to a new level within any given area. Likewise, it's easier to find and collect hidden items, some of which can be used to deck out Kirby's house in the hub area of the game. But it's also possible to just enter a shop and buy items for his pad as well. Lastly, two players can often help each other out when Kirby and Fluff turn into vehicles.
In two of the Fire Land levels, we saw two vehicles: a fire truck and an off-road vehicle. When Fluff and Kirby turn into fire trucks, they're separate and can fire separate streams of yarn from their hoses that push back fire, which spews from the ceiling. However, in the off-road vehicle, Kirby and Fluff become one, and much like the robot (one player controls the robot and its missiles while the second player controls the giant arm with the boxing glove), both players can control separate aspects of the vehicle. It seems that one player can give a slight boost in speed while the other generally controls jumping and other mechanics. At any rate, the vehicle sections are some of our favorites in the game already, and we can't wait to see more of them.
But with all of that in mind, there's one other thing two players can do: Pick each other up and throw each other. In some cases, this is pretty useful because picking up another player can be used to help one player reach a spot he or she was previously unable to access. Additionally, throwing your partner becomes a nice alternative weapon in a pinch when there are no other alternatives available. But as you can imagine, it can also be used for evil, throwing Fluff or Kirby into a pit or water trap, only to see one of them struggle.
Thankfully, Kirby's Epic Yarn is pretty forgiving about death. Much like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, when one player dies, he or she comes back onto the screen, floating until he or she has found a safe spot to touch down. There a few points where we witnessed this firsthand due to some surprisingly difficult obstacles scattered throughout the levels in Fire Land. In one particular level, you have to race rising lava to the top of a volcano where you eventually have to tie off its mouth by pulling a thread closed (there are a couple of smaller volcanoes where you have to do the same thing). We also saw some nods to Super Mario Bros. 2 with quicksand sections that require you to successfully navigate falling layers of sand, and of course, there are dust storms that can sweep you up and toss you into the air.
This is all really just touching the surface of what Kirby's Epic Yarn has to offer. From what we've seen so far, the game offers linear paths toward bosses (such as the boss named Hot Wing in the Fire Lands area), but there are side levels you can unlock and play through as well. Additionally, you can unlock minigames that put your skills to the test in old levels, but now, they have special objectives to meet and usually an allotted time in which to meet them. We'll have more on Kirby's Epic Yarn before its October 17 release.
@hotdiddykong I know Mario Party 9 WAS dropped for Wii Party but now that Wii Party bout released they need to work on Mario Party 9 and a new Mario Kart for Wii not handheld
I'm still saying this thing is girly and pink. No way does girly, pink, and toy store like game get my interest. I mean I'm thirty-two and I still think something like this if for kids. I could see my self telling my buddy. Dude, i'm playing kirby. He is pink and made out of yarn. :P not happening. But if you must enjoy the little yarn fire engine, then knock your self out. sorry, I couldn't resist.
@hotdiddykong It's a good thing Epic Yarn is getting co-op. Single player platformers are easy to get bored with once you completed the game a few times. LBP2, on the other hand, should last years thanks to its incredible editing tools. LBP1 has millions of possibilities, LBP2 we're talking about BILLIONS AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS. But yeah, Epic Yarn first since LBP2 got pushed back to Jan.18 :P
@tobelight Mario party 9 is dropped out for Wii party and Mario kart 3DS should be more enough of a feed
@Rovelius The replay value was kind of obvious since we knew that on the First LBP tough luck btw considering its coming out next year (WHY?!?!?!) Im getting Epic yarn first for 2 reasons 1.Its something new 2. I dont have a PS3.....yet
@hotdiddykong I'd probably get LBP2 over Epic Yarn if I had to make a choice, simply because of the infinite replay value.
Kirbys gonna be fun for my 6 year old son. Im not a fan but nothing negative to say bout the lil pink puff ball. I want Nintendo to work on 2 things Mario Party 9 and another Mario Kart.
Why are you people getting so upset over a game? Games are there too enjoy, not prompt arguments... I mean seriously guys, when will you learn that enjoyment and fun is not objective methods of determining if a game is good or not because it's all relative to the individual. You have your opinion, fine state it, but in such a topic, how does your opinion have more value than another?
@MEDzZ3RO True ill admit, but you cant just throw it off. I understand the circumstances but Little Big planet cant be better and Kirby's epic yarn cant be better due to their differences. Its rather what the player wants. "LBP 2 has alot more depth to it thanks to it's creation options." Well yeah, that's true but Epic yarn isnt a half story and half Create-your-own-thing. Little big Planet 2 has you making your own environment, while Epic yarn has you interacting with it. Im gonna agree with you but, "Not all of us have the cash to spend on multiple games in a genre so they settle for the best." Everyone has their own views so its not automatically LBP2, just saying
@hotdiddykong I disagree,CoD and Halo are easily comparable;both have the largest fps community of followers and both are overhyped and overrated.Although there are better matches to Halo (Resistance and The Conduit),CoD isn't a random Halo match up.Same way as LBP 2 and this isn't,both have all the features I said and Co op.Only real difference between the two is that LBP 2 has alot more depth to it thanks to it's creation options. Both will be decent but for someone like me who owns both systems I can easily see this being turned down in favour of LBP 2.Not all of us have the cash to spend on multiple games in a genre so they settle for the best.
@MEDzZ3RO That may be true but they both have different aspects, Their both exclusives so they both appeal to their respective audience, comparing these two specifically isnt that smart, Halo VS Call of duty is still retarded considering one is multiplatform and the other is an exclusive Besides Little Big Planet 2 transformed the game into a Game maker,Epic yarn isnt, its NOT whose better, its rather What you would rather do, having both a wii and PS3 with both these games is the best you can do
@picori100 I've also played most of the older Kirbys,I know what to expect.Gameplay videos are there to show how they play, clues in the title. You can easily see what how game will be play and if you'd like it or not by looking at a gameplay video. @hotdiddykong The wool comparison hadn't even come to mind;both are exclusive 2d platformers that have unique visuals. That's more then enough to put the two into the same genre.
@MEDzZ3RO Good for you but WHY would you compare the style to LBP? Sack boy is a doll made of yarn, This WHOLE game uses every bit of yarn, They're TOTALLY different
I've never been a fan of the Kirby's series but I'll have to check this one. Graphics look incredible and very original.
@MEDzZ3RO: based on gameplay videos? Wow, sounds like you know your stuff if you can base all that off of a gameplay video. Totally unbias.
If you can mess with your partner, maybe they should add a competitive element in the levels, like in Zelda four swords.
What is Nintendo doing, other than staying true to who they are and delivering games that are innovative, engaging, exciting, fun to play, etc. etc. I have nothing but high regards for Nintendo, and I still haven't picked up a wii yet. I feel like I need a bonk on the noggin just like in those Mott's vegi drink commercials.
... This game is so bad-ass... even my gf if uber impressed... I do kinda hope kirby can "absorb" powers though still.
@Latino1982 Exactly, games are all about fun.Epic yarn is nowhere near Mario Bros.;I stand by what I said,on the bases of fun.Creating new levels and just messing around LBP is still better.I'm not a "fanboy" of either system,I love the PS3 and Wii for many different games.Weirdly I prefer CoD 4 on Wii to PS3,it's just more fun.
Another great game for the Wii. Nintendo are really pushing their limits and owning the year with stellar games. Can't wait to play this !_!
@MEDzZ3RO: dude! its like saying that LBP is better than New Super Mario Bros Wii! my roommate is a huge ps3 fanboy and all he plays is PS3, he was all over me with this LBP, after that i went and i bought NSMBW and we played it together and I asked him which one is better lol ... I guess you know the answer. PS3 & XBOX are consoles to play games with awesome graphics, if you wanna have just fun and not worry about the ugly graphics, not HD graphics then play Wii. As I said before, the main purpose of videogames is to have FUN, how many games have you played that have the most awesome graphics but the game is really boring ;-) For example look at Zelda, ugly graphics, but it is an awesome game!!!
@m3dzorro LOL Just because its kirby its not preschool. even i enjoy kirbies games. Kirby can have nasty abilities when defeating others xD.
@Latino1982 I think the real question you should be asking yourself is how is this better then Little Big Planet 2.I can't think of anything it does better then the original LBP based on gameplay videos.
@slickvic1990 I don't know what it is but it just doesn't seem to appeal to me.Nice to see we can stop the stupid score pointing and just talk civilised.Other M's great and I'm all for change but this isn't Kirby.I may eat my words and say it's good if I ever get to play,I'll wait and see.
@MEDzZ3RO...i dont see how you dont like this game since you claim you like old kirby. Kirby has always had cute, charming, and colorful visuals, and this game brings a unique twist to that. also, simple, enjoyable gameplay has always been present in kirby games, so i dont know what you're talking about there either. the real issue here is that you have some serious self-esteem issues and you simply can't enjoy the game because of that. at least you have a slight point about the changes togameplay. sure, some things like absorbing abilities aren't present, but i havent seen anything from this game that would suggest it's a huge departure from the series norm, kinda like Metroid Other M.
@frankand007 Video games are supposed to be good, not some generic game which is repackaged as a new game.Nintendo have done the concept time and time again only this time they've used Kirby and "cutesie" visuals. @ hunterx313 Nintendo has always had it's own genre, games like Metroid and Zelda are in a class of their own. However,in recent times they have lost their edge. As I said games like this are now existant on PS3,360 and PC;notably Little Big Planet which is better then this. Aren't the "your not a man" statements rather juvenile? I find the games graphics are "girlie",get over it.Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. "Real men" wouldn't be so illiterate or find what I said a threat.
MEDzZ3RO go ask your ex-convict or vietnam veteran Dad to buy you another shooting for your x-box since you can even afford your Wii. Videogames are meant to be videogames, note some random simulator. enough said
@MEDzZ3RO Are you a fully grown man? I suppose not. This game is a very creative and a game suitable for all ages. I definetely agree with you that Nintendo is sitcking a little too much with the "Wii is for Everyone" slogan with some of it's games relating to movies or tv shows, but Nintendo always had it's own genre. If Wii went into shooting games, screw that, I quit video games! If you really don't want to play games like this, than just stick to the Xbox 360, PS3, or the PC games section.
@medzzero: Since when is Kirby diffucult? It was always made for young children. Since when do visuals suggest difficulty level? NEVER! If the fact that he's a pink puff isn't simple or gay enough for you, you've got problems.
@slickvic1990 Fair enough,if people have their heart set on being "ladyboys" it's up to them. It's visuals are enough to suggest gameplay that wouldn't be difficult to a newbie gamer. Simple minds get alot out of simple pleasures. Don't go thinking I'm some Nintendo hater either,I love Nintendo and old Kirby but this is pathetic and seems to have nothing in common with its predecessors.Nintendo are focusing to much on the "Wii is for everyone" concept.
@MEDzZ3RO...yes, in fact I can. It's your problem if your self-esteem issues interfere with you playing a good game.
