I just never seem to do enough damage and I'm always too squishy, any ideas why?
Im going a standard cleaver-thirster-counter other team build but it's like im always a step behind.

I don't have that problem. What's your skill order?

Zed requires some finesse. I think a Brutalizer straight into Bloodthirster would be better than finishing Cleaver first.

Get better at last hitting?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if you're rushing damage and it seems like you're always a step behind maybe it's because you miss a lot of CS so you build too slowly?

I understand where you are coming from but I'm usually pretty high up there in cs, I go q-e-w for skill order

I only have him since yesterday but I max E first? I get my 300cs around 31;00 minutes.. I find him to be one of the easiest champs to cs with.

A lot of it is how you use your shadow, I like leveling Q first in lane and using it to poke at lv 2 with shadow or use it to last hit. Ulting it's like, save your shadow, Q and E right away, hit them once or twice, redo shadow and Q and E then ult goes off.
Just what I've noticed, been learning Zed myself

Okay that game went alot better, so i went q-e-w for max base ad and switched cleaver with bt and it worked like a charm. Much heavier hitting. Thx guys!

You always max E first.

Why would you "always max E first"? It depends completely on the match-up or situation, and Q is a perfectly viable option to max first.

Not really bad he can be good but unless your really good with him he's a tad up. Bad is heimer zed is just situational and really why go zed mid over say pantheon both can instagib a carry except 1 has a stun is a strong tower diver and has an ult that enables easey snowballing of sidelines and frankly pantheons spells are so cheap he goes own less then zed runs low on energy. So I repeat situational or slightly up but Zeds really far from bad if you get the rare good zed player just go getting one.

What situation would you take Q first in?

Always max E first, then W, then Q. The utility from W far outweighs the gains from Q. Zed's a bad champion anyway though.
