Can you get a star ranking playing only wifi races?

I dont want to go in and start the story mode iv unlocked all of the characters and vehicles on wifi and im wondering if its possible to get stars without story mode

Nope, you have to beat the Grand Prix cups - all with one star ranking or more - in order to get the star(s) by your name on Wi-Fi races/battles.
