I thought the only things you need to do to get 3 star rank is to do the following two things:
1: Get 60 points.
2: Cross the starting line in 1st place in every lap.

Anyone that played Mario Kart DS and paid attention to the times they got 3 star ranks would probably notice that the above is all that matters. No matter how sloppy your racing is as long as you fulfill the above two rules you will get 3 stars (but of course sloppy is relative since any mistakes at the start of the race usually costs you the 1st place spot on lap one and thus you will get 2 stars at most due to item spamming at the middle ranks)

I tried this today on Star Cup 100cc. I was only nr 2 over the start line after the first lap on Daisy Circuit and yet I got 3 stars. So maybe its not the same for MK Wii?

Rule #2 assumes rule #1 anyway.
But definitely not true. Try a race with a slower kart, like the Quaker. Very often you could have first place after every single lap and still not get 3 stars. Its the lap times that matter.

I'd imagine you didn't get adulterated by lots of shells/bolts/spin-outs etc. I didn't mean it was impossible, but I'd guess that your buffer for error was very tiny and you raced well enough every lap to come in below the magic number.

No. I've gotten 2 stars with the wiil on a license that I deleted.
1 star with the classic controller. (License deleted)
...and 3 stars with the Quacker, Mii+Mach, Mii+Bullet, and Funky+Spear.

Honestly, the above poster discussing the theory of 3 good lap times I think may be close. I had such trouble getting these, but then I started working on unlocking the Expert Staff Ghosts using this topic:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=942008&topic=45308948(It's the other sticky on this board). Once I got all those unlocked, then I knew the absolute best line to take on a course, then I used some of the tips in this topic and went and re-did all the cups. With the lines and skills picked up with the ghosts, I almost didn't need some of the tips in here, because it typically wasn't close.
If you're really having trouble with getting 3 stars, then go work on the ghosts. That practice will help a lot.

Thanks, cadillacactor for the thumbs-up.
I made a thread on the mariokartwii web page a while ago. It garnered some attention but I'm guessing it fell off the radar without a sticky:
http://www.mariokartwii.com/f7/alternate-3-star-theory-take-two-27853.htmlThat's my theory.
While I agree that other guides have their own merits, I personally have seen many 2-star rankings while being in first-place 100% of the time, which tends to violate the "rules" of other theories.
Regardless, whatever guide helps you get 3-stars is what matters, so if it helps, then good

In my opinion, S_R_P's trick to getting a 3-star rank is the easiest and the best out of the entire topic. I have just tested it out today, and it got me a 3-star rank, three times in a row. (In case you were wondering, I have stopped playing the game for a while after my third 3-star rank in a row.)
This has replaced my usual tactic of just trying to get a perfect race in. Even without getting hit by a single blue shell, my tactic fails and I leave the race with a 2-star rank and an angry face.
I have followed S_R_P's trick and it works. Although it's strange to stay off the sand in Peach Beach and the "Out of bounds" areas, even though it's usually faster than using the normal road, it's better to do that.
In other words and in conclusion, race as you normally do, follow the map, and stay off the "Out of bounds" areas.
Here is the original text:
"I just got 12 ***s in a row simply by staying in the middle of the track.
IMO the op is full of bull****; all you need to do is stay in the middle of the track and know what parts of the track are counted as offroad despite not slowing you down (the sand in Peach Beach, tiles in N64 and Wii Bowser's and the green bits of DK Mountain are good examples)."
