Other then him being a Cyborg his fighting style is by far the best I've seen. It's like Martial Arts mix with Swordplay mix with Acrobatics and mix with Juggling (switching swords from right hand to left hand and to feet in one flawless motion).

He is a bad ass because he was a child solider who murdered countless people, thus his nick names "Jack The Ripper" and "White Devil"

The only reason people don't like him is because 1. we wanted our first PS2 MGS to feature Snake, and we got him instead and 2. Because he looked horrible in the skull suit. I even admit, that I played with the Raiden mask with the moss camo in MGS3 :3

i got so f***ing hype when MGS3 asks which you like of MGS1 and 2, and i answered MGS2, and when the flight mask was taken off it was f***ing raiden!! i was so disappointed when i heard that MGS3 wasn't a direct sequel and i thought kojima trolled everyone, but it was just a mask...

Funny to see this thread over ten years after everyone was raging about being forced to play through most of MGS2 as a whiny pretty boy instead of SNAEK.

I love that when Kojima finally let people play as Snake in the Plant chapter in Substance, the missions had the most ridiculous non-canon stories (not to mention the Godzilla-sized swimming soldier).

    My answer is 'quite'.

Calling him a badass is more-or-less a retcon in itself. In MGS2, you needed at least one playthrough to a) let go of the fact that you can't have that awesome adventure with Snake that you wanted, and b) get used to him.

Being cast as the Cyborg Ninja in MGS4 mostly speaks for itself; but at the same time, he was going through a whangsty depression phase. Earning his happy ending was a particular moment of note.

Moralistic elements and how he reacts to them have always been a distinct and interesting part of Raiden's character. His relationship with Rose has also been interesting, due to the monumental mind-screw surrounding her in MGS2. This dynamic was mostly retconned, though.

Raiden will be a matured age character for the first time, and a focus this time will be giving him a badass edge. So I'd expect there's going to be significantly less whangs; but even so, it's being written by Japanese writers who aren't at least 40 years old, so there's bound to be a few face-palm worthy moments regardless.

If you go quote mining with Snake, you still end up neck-deep in whangst territory when you edit them all together in a compilation.

Yea, it only took me about halfway into the first playthrough of MGS2 for him to grow on me. I can't act like i wasn't a bit disappointed about not playing as snake(especially with that cock tease of a tanker mission), but he is a cool character in his own right.

In MGS2 I was just kinda neutral to him. Like "Eh he's alright". I honestly liked the skull suit. More than Snake's outfits anyway. It looks even better in PSABR and this (assuming it's unlockable). It may not have helped that MGS2 was my first MGS so I wasn't AS attached to Snake. He was a bit over the top with the complaining, but I did kinda understand where he was coming from in most cases.

In MGS4, I just kept saying "Please let him be playable, please let him be playable, please let him be playable". He honestly was becoming one of my favorite video game characters ever. And I really didn't care that he was whiny. I mean he was basically just a head and a spine, and he was under the impression that Rose was cheating on him Colonel Cambell of all people. I don't think I'd be too happy either.

Then I saw him in this and I'm like "BRINGO!".

The first time I play MGS2 at my friends house. We played as Snake for about 30 minutes then we had to leave. Later my cousin got it and my first reaction was "WTF were is Snake". Same thing can be said about MGS3 well it's more like "where is the story heading too". Never did I know that these two games will make the series a fit so perfectly.
Also bringing back MGS1 into the fray is just too EPIC. It's like "the end begins where it all started."

I liked Raiden MGS2. Snake came off as a jerk in that game. I remover an article called " the final hours of MGS2"where Kojima says Snake was still the main character of MGS2. It seems like damage control to me because Snake didn't contribute as much to the plot as Raiden did.

where Kojima says Snake was still the main character of MGS2.

Yeah, he was fibbing to appease the jerkweed American fanboys. Snake is pretty clearly a supportive mentor figure separate from the protagonist in MGS2's Plant chapter.
