I played this game once when it first came out at at friends house. The online play seemed really good but I have forgotten about the game til now. I am thinking of buying it now but only if I can play online. Are the servers still up?

Nope, MGO ended in August when the trophy patch was added.

What gets me is COD World at War has been out just as long or longer. I don't know why MGS4 was ruined by taking offline after only 4 years.

Because this isn't crappy COD?, MGS is a single player game....how was it ruined, sure it sucks they took it off but how did it ruin the game itself

breaking news, this is MGS, a game which focus on "storyline" and "character development". If you want a teabagging simulator, go buy a Xbox and play Halo.

regardless how we feel, the developer has jump into this mentality since they stick online into everything now including God of War and Dead Space. i wont be surprise if bioware release Dragon Age 3 with online deathmatch or something.

Hate to break it to you but MGS3 had online multiplayer, Portable Ops did, Peace Walker had ad hoc party online multiplayer and so did this, this isn't new, it's actually a great bit of MGS fun. The reason why people want online multiplayer is because it keeps the game very replayable, while singleplayer always eventually loses it's luster, the nature of playing against an unpredictable opponent...
