There are other ways to get a steal you know.
- Play intense D. The ball handler may fumble the ball/bounce it off his leg and you can get your hands on it automatically.
- Anticipate a pass and then you press X. Easy way to pick off a pass to earn a steal.
The only time I reach in really is if a Center or Power Forward picked up a defensive rebound. If you're in good position, reaching in will work.

Well, we'll see. At first I thought you'd reach to get a ball since I'm no expert at basketball, and yeah, I'm using a Center as my first guy, but I'm doing awful since the only thing I can manage are C's and such, at ugh, at one point was a D.

Even in real life basketball not that many steals come from reaching. A lot of them come from players fumbling while dribbling and others playing the passing lane. Others come from stripping the ball from guys driving into the lane or going up for dunks. Reaching like a fool isn't that big an aspect of basketball, so stop doing it.
