Best advice, watch the name indicator around his feet (it flashes blue at the best time to release), or watch the shooting animation (release the button/stick just when the ball leaves your hand).
It takes practice to get the timing right. Different animations have different timing.

I've played over 100 hours of this game and never even noticed the circle>< thanks. Always went off the release.

My way of doing it is choose the right free throw release animation (if you're creating your own character)...I suggest GENERIC. It's the easiest one to time and master. Just release the button right around the time you flick your wrist.
If you're in My Player mode, if you max out your free throw skill points, you're almost guaranteed not to miss.

Chris Pauls freethrow is only 40SP and its basically a sec hold and release.

Go into practice > free throw and keep throwing it up until you get used to where the top spot on the hand animation is. That's what I did. It's easy but skills help too I guess ...
