This is nothing like Forza or GT. Those are driving games that trade largely on their selection of cars. Great games too. But NFS Shift and Shift 2 are RACING games. The handling is supposed to be twitchy and sensitive etc. I play on medium AI with ABS and traction control, but no stability control. I keep the racing line on cause I don't have time to learn the tracks inside out. Tune the settings and learn the cars. Then drive like a racer. Love it.

No local multiplayer/Split-screen? That is an automatic no-go for any racer!

The reviewer complains that its neither a simulation nor an arcade racer as a negative. I LOVE the idea, I'm not a hardcore simulation fan, nor do I enjoy extremely cartoon physics racers with rockets and such. Perfect match for me, not too punishing while still a bit arcade driven, great fit.

does this game support the steering wheel? just give me a thumbs up if it does. :)

Steering is sensitive just like he said.. which is key to a racing game. It's kinda game-breaking for me..

I loved this game, the driver view from behind the wheel is the best way to experience it, deserved at least an 8.

can you custom your car like in underground 2?

The career mode is too short and the load times are ridiculous but other than that this game is great fun, and it's enjoyable while we all wait for GT5, and Hot Pursuit :) Should be at least 8.0

hey, Norton, using something as creepy as Hasselfhoff won't get you any customers.....

For the record, this game is NO WHERE near a "True Driving Experience". All the adjustments you make on your car doesn't transmit well into controls. And for those cars on Tier one, the ALL handle the same. Badly. Even if you tweaked it, it still handles badly. In particular, I HATE the auto downshifting it performs when you come to a corner. Downshift should only kick in after you brake. Not before. The full manual controls are an absolute pain to use. When you have tuned your car, your brake point will ultimately get shorter and depending on the toe-adjustments, you can set up the car to take twisty circuits or long flowing ones. But the auto downshift ruins this, you cannot brake late into a corner. In the long straights, it is virtually impossible to overtake a car more powerful than you but in a twisty track, you can do so only IF you can brake later than your opponent. What would work best is that brake markers be placed on the track to let you decide how late you wish to brake into a corner. This just doesn't happen in the game.

is calvert himself can drive in this game? even in this game he is driving without following the racing line. how stupid. and in any sense, this game is branded with "TRUE DRIVER EXPERIENCE". give up on that, this game is giving that and succeed.

This game was pretty underrated. Maybe an 8.5 would be a better rating

I loved the demo. Gees people make up your mind. First you get sick of street racers then they give you this and you say you always wanted them. I got sick of the try hard gangsta style of the street racers personally. It was so lame.

idk why nfs wont just stick with street racing games thats whats best every1 had fun getting away from the cops lol... and midnight club does a terrible job with that...

I bashed this game at first...... I am actually starting to like it some. I HATE the drifting events but it's fun now. I am still waiting for GT5 and will most likely be waiting for a while.

i agree with most of the review but feel that one major thing about shift has been missed out,the DRIVER MECHANICS,tho after watching the review can see why as not once was the in-car view seen. I erge anyone who loves racers to check out the in-car view and just how the speed affects the sound the vision the reacts and the recovery, its even made clear in the opening video. This game is more about the driver than the cars and tracks. Thanks for reading. Great game.

I've been playing this for a few days now. If you turn off all the driving assists and set it on professional, it's actually a pretty good driving sim. My biggest complaints are all the load times - sometimes it can feel as if you spend as much time waiting for a race to load as you do actually racing. And the replays are broke - if you're using a wheel, it will turn occasionally as you view a replay. This eventually causes it to start cycling through the on-screen options, creating a clicking noise. And you can't turn the music off during replays. Some of it isn't bad, but some of it is just horrible. Overall though I think it's a great game.

I miss NFS Most Wanted.... but this game is really cool

mkido110
mkido110

i believe need for speed needs to stick to its old street style racing and keep there genre off the track..unless its like track racing like on NFS underground...they need to bring back the racing from underground. and modernize it bcuz that was the tightest game and had the tightest story line

Try using ONLY the first-person view, then you might experience the full potential this game truly has.

i don't quite get this review - Forza 3 does all the same things as shift at about the same quility as shift (bar the physics) so why does shift only get a 7.5 ? well i don't get it even though my friend still told me to only give it a 7.5 i my self think it deserves an 8 and i think that Gs may have focused to much on the bad and not the good.

I don't own this game..yet.. just saying, my favourite in the series was Underground 2, coz it had everything, realism, ease of use, customisation, soundtrack and none of them cops, I get the adrenalin rush, but they just piss me off, everytime the see me, jesus :@ Basically, I'm really into the customising part, I want my car to be completely my own. My favourite PS3 game so far is MC:LA just because of how awesome the car customising is. What is this game like in that area? Also, I like realism, and normal cars, the kind I could afford oneday, so I like the focuses and cosworths and chargers, but I don't find the supercars appealing, they are too arcade. Plus, I want FREE ROAM!!!!! that makes a game! Look at Burnout Paradise, look at MC:LA look at Assassins Creed ffs, they all have the same thing in common, FREE ROAM!!! Actually, I may be wrong, does this game have that lol?

tis review has some valid points, but ocmes off as if this game misses the mark completely. I disagree. I have been playing Forza, Gran Turismo 4, and this game back to back repeatedly and Turismo 4 has the most accurate car physics, Forza seems to have all the bells and whistles (car physics are good, but they do not have the little things that were included even in GT4 like a visual represntation of car weight shifting on turns-Forza's cars kind of look like boxes as far as motion goes. NFS: Shift hands down has the most inntense driving experience of the three especially if you turn all the assists off (when they are on, the driving feels dead..). ALso I think graphically this game's environments and car models are pretty darn good. Forza looks more like a painting to me. GT4 I wouldn't even rate grpahically against these two.. I would give this game at least an 8.5

Why oh why would the reviewer refuse to play the game and review the in-car camera which is far better than any other cockpit cam in other racers. @sasha08 ignore this review if you enjoyed the demo, this game is amazing, it has intense sense of speed and those collissions while in cockpit cam are scary. the only thing that got me down is the smaller list of cars but thats understandable on a new game series (Shift IP). I dont know why everyone is saying that being between an arcade racer and a sim is a bad thing. I like both... I like sim but sometimes its too dry, I like arcade but sometimes Im playing an arcadey game thinking "why couldnt they just add this or that detail?" and on this they did. they didnt go so far that the game was too deep for some NFS players because the NFS series hasnt been done like that before so they just go part way to ease NFS vets into it. But they did go far enough to appease some sim racer players(emphasis on some, not all) with some more realism than the common arcade racer. also note that the cockpit view adds a different level of realism not found in other racers with realistic head movement and collission damage. la la la

@smookert thats why theyre making an underground street racing game.

I think that gamespot were a little harsh on this game as all the other reviewers gave it mostly 8 and 9 out of 10. Well gamespot have always been strict and harsh on game reviews, this is what makes the reviews truthful. Does anyone remember what happened to the reviewer Jeff Guerstmaann? He was fired from gamespot from giving kane and lynch a bad review.

smookert

NFS need to keep its roots. Its and underground race game (police, street racers) I don't mind circuit races but i do mind it whit NFS.. Pro street anyone ? . Though this game is FAR better then pro street , its cinda the same for me . i expect cop chases, intens highway moments , dodging traffic, sexy women , AND SPLITSCREEN . None of these things are in this game.. Its not an bad game but its not an NFS game

Bad-Chad
Bad-Chad

This is the lowest review for this game that I've seen. most are giving it 90%. AND it is more fun than Forza, and the in cockpit view is absolutely superior to Forza and is actually the best I've ever seen in a car game.

Torres_

The driving physics ruin this game. It doesn't feel like a real car AT ALL. You keep losing your back end all the time which is totally stupid and frustrating. Plus the game rewards you for pushing others out of the track. WTF!?! A piece of garbage as NFS has been for years now. Why can't they make something like NFS Porsche was but with all sorts of cars and competitions? After all the hype.. It's sad how bad games are sold by using a known name.

Just got done watching the Most Wanted review than i came to watch this one. It dissapointed me, in my honest opinion NFS was my favorite racing game back when they where making things like Underground 2 and Most wanted, but i think they went down hill since than. All the NFS games just seem average to me. Hopefully EA gets back on their game and statrs making us some good games, although i think this game is better than Pro Street, so maybe they are on their way back up? (crosses fingers)

My friend loves these games and he raves about Shift. I think it looks average at best, especially after watching this review.

Man, I'm puzzled on this review. I was just about to get this and I checked some reviews before I throw out some cash. I've noticed other reviews have givin this a much higher score, I don't understand cause gamespot are pretty good. So that leaves me to wonder whether this game is any good. I enjoyed the demo and the cockpit view. Anyways just confirmed Dirt 2 for me, Dirt and Grid are awesome games. Have to hire this 1 first.

Need For Speed Have Sucked Since Mst Wanted Kill It Off For Gods Sake And Stop People From Wasting There Money. EA Would Have To Invest Millions To Get This Up To Scratch To Match What We Expect From Forza 3 & GT5.
