Silver Shard?

Hello, I just bought Neverwinter Nights 2 and have collected the silver shard at te beginning of the game for my stepfather. However when I got back to town I was yelled at by my stepfather for not returning with the shard even though it was in my inventory. Am I missing something?
Oh, and I also reloaded my save but it still occurs. Also my journal does not update when I get the shard from the chest, any ideas?

you should have received a cutscene when you opened the chest. If not you are probably not fully patched yet as there was an early glitch with MotB that made it impossible to continue the OC from here. Make sure you are connected to the internet, then from the main NWN2 startup screen hit update to launch the NWUpdate program. Once you are updated you will probably have to start a new game. You can also export your older character, but the game is so early that it won't matter too much.
