Coin Challenge Pack A discussion - Meeting and exceeding the 10,000 coin goal

- Oct 3, 2012 9:53 am GMTThese DLC packs are out but I'd like to discuss about Coin Challenge Pack A specifically.
This is a neat package designed for you to try and earn the most coins possible and compete on the leaderboard, where data retrieved through SpotPass will update the high score listing on their site:
http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/games/ms/newsupermariobros2/aoc.html?b=index
The target total for this pack is stated to be 10,000 coins, which in fact is doable even when using White Raccoon Mario (I got 9976).
I recommend playing through the pack as White Raccoon Mario first because there are a LOT of nooks and crannies which you need to find.
With practice I got my total record up to 22,180 coins. I'm sure it can be higher as well because of certain tricks that come to mind.
Checking Nintendo.co.uk, apparently the current best score is 21,230, so I'm flattered.
The big deal is that you need to start with a Gold Flower on the first level, find the numerous hidden 1up blocks on it, and get a Gold Flower ready for the next stage.
Then on the second stage there isn't a Gold Flower that you can grab.
But on the third stage there is a hidden Gold Flower block, it's located just above the 2nd heavyweight Hammer Bro, which is standing atop a row of brick blocks (including a 10-coin block)
So what about you guys, how high of a score have you managed on Coin Challenge Pack A so far?
I would be very disappointed if nobody got past 20,000 coins. The three courses are so jam-packed with those time bonuses that you're allowed to do as much as you need to.

Clean Cut high score: 65 cuts?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6_Ty50Kais - Oct 3, 2012 11:23 am GMTHeh. I'm just trying to get the target of 10,000 coins!
You wait till someone finds an exploit and those leaderboards are filled with 30,000.

Using White Raccoon is for sissies and toddlers.
Duh, OR it's for an alternative means of play where your capacity to collect coins is limited and thus a challenge in its own right.
It is also a useful scouting utility that allows you to explore everything in a level in an attempt to strategize the most lucrative path through the courses.
Anyhow I just cleared another run of Coin Challenge Pack A, although I goofed and took damage at the end, losing my Gold Flower, I ended with 23,780 coins.
I reckon 25,000 could be possible if I follow through with a certain scheme...

- Oct 3, 2012 2:12 pm GMTOkay, well, beat my record of 25,728 coins and then tell me to never use the White Raccoon Suit.

There's a Red Koopa Troopa at the start of the second course, and before a one-way path at the middle of the third course. If I time manage a bit better, I can probably break 27k.
Incidentally the leaderboard updated last night with a new top score of 25,748, which is not my 25,728 score, not found on the leaderboard.
Either someone else did better than me and my score didn't upload, or they actually inflated my score for some reason.

Clean Cut high score: 65 cuts?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6_Ty50Kais - Oct 4, 2012 5:06 pm GMTThe leaderboards updated again, my 25,728 score showed up so it just took them a long time to actually process it, since neither my 26,744 score or my newer 27,496 record have shown up yet.
Their current #1 displays 26,328, I've way surpassed that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6_Ty50Kais - Oct 4, 2012 5:44 pm GMTSo everyone just exploits the koopa shell trick for coins? Makes me not want to play. I have to do that mundane crap every run just to get on the leaderboard?
How about we all just grab as many coins as we can in the time limit... without performing some stupid crap like standing still for coins.

Care to elaborate? Not including the 3 1-ups from the fire pipe, I've counted only 2 1-ups (invisible block to the right of the structure with the checkpoint flag, invisible block to the right of the blue pipe at the end). Where are the others?

You can see it in the penultimate Japanese Nintendo Direct if I'm not mistaken~
Just bouncin' on it, and then landing on it for some coins. xP
It's rather amusing that Koopa Troopas are in the same areas as small enclosures, it's like Nintendo's just begging for hilarious shenanigans to ensue~ :3c

There are spots in the second and third courses where you'll need to keep bouncing a Koopa shell off a wall, to get the best possible scores yes.
Incidentally when you get the hidden Super Star on the second course, and run all the way over to the check point... just before the sort of elevator shaft is a pair of ? blocks. One of them will have a Super Star in it if you've still invincible.

That's two that I can think of.
There's one at the very start of the course, when you grab the two blue clocks, before jumping up to grab the first Star Coin go to the far left of the screen and jump up to hit a 1up block.
How many coins do you finish the first course with? I usually end with 1900+ coins.
There might be something tucked away that'll make 2000 coins possible, but I wonder where...
