French news networks are reporting that two masked men stole some 6,000 copies of Activision's upcoming first-person shooter from a delivery truck south of Paris.
Activision has already suffered a setback this week concerning the upcoming release of the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, with sealed copies of the game surfacing on a number of online auctions two days before launch.
Now, it appears two individuals in France also wanted to get their hands on an early copy of the first-person shooter. French news networks are reporting that two masked men armed with tear gas and knives hijacked a truck near Paris and fled with its cargo, which contained around 6,000 copies of Modern Warfare 3.
According to a report from TF1 news channel, and as translated by GameSpot, two men crashed into a van transporting a cargo of boxed video game copies near Creteil, 10 kilometres southeast of Paris, around 8 a.m. yesterday morning. When the van's driver and occupants left the vehicle after the crash, two masked men used tear gas and drove away in the van, taking the cargo with them.
According to an Agence France Presse (AFP) report, the van's cargo contained 400,000 euros of merchandise, all copies of Modern Warfare 3. The news report estimates the number of copies at around 6,000.
Last week, Infinity Ward representative Robert Bowling spoke for the Modern Warfare 3 developer on Twitter, saying, "No plans to ban legit fans, but try to wait 'til midnight launch on Tuesday to play #MW3."

Well, now a few ppl got their hands on MW3 a day before it's release and 6,000 ppl didn't need to pay 60$ to the cashier
...and everyone kept saying that GTA series are giving us gamers a bad influence? There's another news in another site of a pre-order customer threatening to blow up best buy cuz they ran out of copies...
Good - they kept 6,000 more retards from wasting their money. Not sure I've ever said this but props to you frenchies.
They hijacked the van, and then found out it was MW3. They were so let down, they dumped the van in La Senne (french river going through Paris) with it's Cargo. Alright, I kid around, but that's how I am imagining it happened :p.
What slack jawed delivery company has 6,000 video games in a van? It would have to be an insidfe job or an insurance scam.
Marvel: well done zakhaev, i see the mission went well. Zakhaev: It was a piece of cake. my sniper took out the driver from a good vantage point, so taking the merchandise from the van was like taking a candy from a baby.....well... actually its not easy taking a candy from a baby unless you want to die of dreadfull screams.
Its sad to see kiddy fanboy wars.... what make me sick was they said MW3 sucks and all that but in the end, the spend their life playing it... stop acting. Sales figure tells everything
November 5!?!...This article would've been so much better if it was reported that the robbers were wearing Guy Fawkes masks, lol
Didn't something like this happen with a MW2 shipment back in 2009? Geez, people will go to deep ends for CoD games. Its quite pathetic...
Wow. Sell it to fans days earlier for a higher price. Figure 6000 * 80Euro each. That's quite a profit of 480000.
Lol What if they stole all Wii Versions of the game, The looks on their faces would be priceless!!!!!!!!!
@Spahettificator You're speaking largely to Americans, so no. As far as most of us are concerned, France never did anything but surrender to villains, then get bailed out by us heroic 'mericans (we don't like history).
I do not like activision, but this is very uncool, sucks for all the people who wont be able to get the game.
Happy activision will lose money? insurance.. or they weren't activisions delivery men, so they will face the bill. - 6000 people, and however many pre-orders, wont get the game they paid for. Doesn't matter if you don't like CoD, a lot of people do and that sucks to not get the game. probably wont take long for them to get replaced, but still it sucks. At least (at most) the CoD fans only had to wait a year for the title to come out; 2 if you count back to MW2. :) Seriously though, with the ENORMOUS amount of hate on the webs for CoD.... Where's all of cods sales coming from? ;)
why are ppl tripping over this game trying to get it early. got this game for 5bucks over a week ago. get smart ppl
Ha, I heard some amusing story of how a guy paid over $1000 for an early copy of Modern Warfare 3 on Ebay. It was on the 4th, but the thing that puts a smile on my face is that it is going to take 3-4 working days before it gets to him XD.
They stole the wrong game jackwagons but then again . . . they did steal over 400 euros of Activision's pocket.
@Spahettificator Well, yeah, but, really? Come on. The French Resistance? Isn't that an oxymoron? Of course, I kid. :D
I wouldn't be surprised if Bobby Kotick himself was behind this. When he heard that people were actually paying upwards of 12 thousand dollars for it on eBay, he just had to find a way to get in on that action.
@Wrecked69 Ahhh, yeah I misread. I thought it said they crashed a van into a truck containing the games. Thanks for the correction :)
@supertom221 I bet they "Camped" Out all night waiting for that truck. I guess CoD is a bad influence. O.o
Oh, Like this is some big news. It was to be expected. Besides, MW3 has been available for more over a month now on all major sites. Here's something to let you all know, though you probably already did: Thestory is short and dissapointing. Not a suprise, I know.
