E3 06: SNK PlayMore's E3 games announced

Four new titles planned, including Metal Slug Anthology for the Nintendo Wii.

LOS ANGELES--SNK's Electronic Entertainment Expo booth will include four new titles when the show launches next week. The games will all be released in Q3 2006 and will span the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance. Metal Slug Anthology will be SNK's first Wii game, King of Fighters 2006 is an all-new PS2 3D fighter, while handheld titles SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters DS and Metal Slug complete the lineup.

King of Fighters 2006 is a PS2 exclusive at the show and will be a 3D fighter based on the long-running series. It is set to feature characters from The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact, as well as hidden characters. SNK also promises that The King of Fighters anime series will be included as a free gift with the game at retail.

Metal Slug Anthology will be released on both the Wii and the PSP and will combine six Metal Slug titles from the arcade version, in addition to as-yet unnamed bonus content. The games confirmed for the package include Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, and Metal Slug 5.

SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters DS is the first new game in the card-battling series since 2000 and will feature characters from both SNK and Capcom games. Finally, Metal Slug is a port of the classic arcade 2D action game that will launch on the Game Boy Advance.

Make sure to check the E3 homepage for more coverage of the event.

VG Cats made fun of Capcom vs SNK, pretending it was like a card battle game. Then why is SNK actually doing it?

Possibly b/c SNK made 2 card fighting games for the Neo Geo Pocket Color? Go on gamefaqs and look it up. They are SUPERB games. The announcement of the DS one is beyond cool. I just wish I could actually find a complete copy of the second game for NGPC. It's literally no where to be found.

This new KOF better be good since I still haven't bought an SNK game for my PS2.

So.... no Samurai Shodown? You tease me with a mediocre XBOX SS5, betray me with no SS5 for my PS2... and now you just abandon the franchise all together... well I guess I should run back to mother now (Street Fighter II) since you don't love me anymore...

I was hoping they would have something new to talk about. All these games were announced a while ago. As long as they keep bringing Japanese PS games over on to the Xbox in the states I'll be happy enough.

Card Fighters DS is an instant purchase for me. That announcement alone is enough for this E3 as far as I'm concerned. Time to brush up on my NGPC version.

Sigh. More quickie Gamecube ports for the Wii. I see an alarming trend...

  • Baroque-Legacy

    Posted May 8, 2006 10:26 am GMT

    To JXY:
Ben Herman at SNK stated that the ports on the Wii will not be direct, and will be altered for play on the magic wand. I really, really hope they would include straight ports.

    To The_Orgy:
A great deal of people here have never even heard of a Neo Geo, so I feel your pain when folks are so ill-informed about Hardware like the Atomiswave. I own both a Neo and an AW, and I think it's great to see SNK still kicking out the 2-D goodness!

Another 3D KOF?!? NO! NO! FFS NO!

  • Jxy

    Posted May 8, 2006 8:02 am GMT

The_Orgy -- thanks for the info on MS6... guess I don't have to import the PS2 version of that... I just pray that they leave in an option to play unmangled versions of the games... it's cool that they want to try utilizing the Revo's controller, but I'd much rather play Metal Slug the way it's supposed to be played.

  • Jxy

    Posted May 8, 2006 8:00 am GMT

This is great news. If SNK isn't talking about US releases for any 2D games like KOF XI, Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi, and NGBC, then it's gotta be safe to import them. Wicked.

  • 966305

    Posted May 8, 2006 7:50 am GMT

they should anounce KOF XI and NGBC for PS2.

  • The_Orgy

    Posted May 8, 2006 7:06 am GMT

Something else that I noticed, the guys here at Gamespot really don't know which characters are the most representative of KOF for example, they put Lien Neville (that's the character in the pic of MI2 isn't it?) when they should have placed Kyo or Iori there.

  • The_Orgy

    Posted May 8, 2006 7:04 am GMT

Word from SNKP executives: the Metal Slug Anthology on the Wii WILL include Metal Slug 6 in it, plus support for the new motion sensitive control. The question is, how they will implement it in such a fast paced game.

To the guy that said that SNKP is still working on 15yo hardware, the old NeoGeo has been put in it's coffin since 2003, all the new games from SNKP, the newest KOFs, MS, etc are made on the Atomiswave system (cousin of the Dreamcast), and they are already looking forward to move again to an even better system.

KOF Maximum Impact 2 (aka 2006 in the US) and SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters are two very fresh and entertaining games, MI2 has actually corrected all the mistakes of it's predecessor and comes packed with a lot, a LOT of great and original things.

A new cardfighters game can only mean one thing: more superdeformed Capcom and SNK message board avatars. But seriously there was a time when SNK was the maverick company, but now they've been playing it too safe, relying on known franchises and changing very little to the underlying game mechanics. I think the company has regressed in quality since the collapse of Dreamcast (with their excellent ports of KOF, Last Blade, and Garou) and the NeoGeo Pocket Color.

No X360 because Playmore is still working with 15 year old technology. They would have to put it on XBL Arcade for a fraction of what they could get on other systems.

Everyone rags on SNK for flogging tired old franchises - dont nintendo do much the same? (albeit with far more grace and innovation) While I am as excited as the next nintendo fanboy about a new Zelda, I would love to see a fresh IP from the big N.

At any rate, these titles from SNK are really only going to appeal to a limited fanbase of rabid fans, and I question wether or not they will entice new gamers to sample these ageing franchises.
