E3 06: Grand Theft Auto IV coming to 360, PS3 in 2007

[UPDATE] Microsoft confirms next Grand Theft Auto is coming to Xbox 360 in October 2007; Rockstar Games confirms simultaneous launch on PS3.

LOS ANGELES--In one of the most shocking announcements at E3, Microsoft revealed that it quite literally stole away some of Sony's audience. One of the PlayStation's most notoriously popular franchises, the Grand Theft Auto series, is confirmed to be coming to the Xbox 360. Previous editions of GTA were released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 in October, and were later ported to the Xbox. Now we know that Grand Theft Auto 4 will be hitting the Xbox 360 on "day one," alongside the PlayStation 3 version of the game.

At today's Microsoft pre-E3 conference, Peter Moore pulled back his right shirt sleeve and revealed the familiar Halo 2 logo. Duping the audience into thinking that a new Halo was about to be announced, the Englishman then pulled back his left shirt sleeve, which revealed a tattoo that showed a Grand Theft Auto IV logo.

Grand Theft Auto IV will be available on October 16, 2007, in North America, and October 19 in Europe.

Moore did announce that Microsoft and Rockstar have signed an exclusive agreement to provide episodic content via Xbox Live, though he did not specifically limit the content to GTAIV.

Following the announcement during the Microsoft press conference, Rockstar Games issued a press release confirming that GTAIV would be hitting both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously in the fall of 2007. The brief announcement specifically confirms that Scotland-based Rockstar North, creators of the previous GTA titles, will be developing the game.

    Not all xbox 360 has HD-DVD, HD-dvd is only sold as an add-on drive. And since Blu-ray won the market It wouldn't be surprising if they stopped selling them. The bigger the storage is on a Dvd the less compression will be required from the game manufacturers, therefore this could translate to better loading times. Graphics has nothing to do with the compression of data on games; Only movies. I think that 20gb is more than enough for that game. Seeing as they take into account the storage they have available, in this case it will be the max capacity of blu-ray since all PS3's come equipped with it or the max capacity of DVD-R DL (8.5gb) which all xbox360's can read.

    I don't know where you've read that any console can utilize DX10. DX10 was developed after both the PS3 and Xbox 360 arrived to the market. The PS3 does NOT use DX10; The Ps3's gpu architecture is a pre-existing modified 7800 gpu (as I recall) which suffers from the nvidia 7 series line inability to utilize true HDR while Anti-Aliasing is on.

    Although it is actually easier to port an Xbox 360 coded game to the Pc, since they utilize a modified DX9 version to code for the 360; thus making it easier and faster to do so than in the PS3. However this doesn't guarantee a good port at all.

    With all that cleared, I can state that times like this I wish I had a console. GTA IV looks to be a terrific game, although I've never liked any of the other ones mainly because of the graphics and lots of bugs.
    All I can do is hope that it comes to PC. In the meantime I'll keep playing TF2, Crysis, Guild Wars and hopefully Battlefield Heroes.

    may i remind you all that new games espically gta 4 with physics and graphic engines and the main game engine require alot more programing that older games gta 4 alone has 130 programmers working on it 130 and they have 100 days to work on the game which they have recently stated to have gta 4 out after the 100 day mark

    also the amount of compression these days on disk is alot more than it used to be like blu ray is massive 50gb if i remember correctly and that will have less compression on the cd and ps3 might aswell get the exclusive content aswell and remember the old eithernet port well playstation 3 has that aswell o yes playstation 3 can go online same as xbox 360

    and xbox 360 well they use hd dvd thats 20gb if i remember correctly so that means more compression and less power they may town down the physics part of the game on xbox 360 and the graphics a tad

    and you are all going nuts about o when will the game comes out well just remember 130 programmers plus this

    you are on consoles xbox 360 and playstation 3 gta 4 will be polished to the max to insure there aint no glitches and **** unlike san andreas f**k the ammount of bugs and glitches in that game where horrible after rockstar made a sloppy port of it to pc

    i want gta to come out to pc pc has everything the xbox 360 and ps 3 can have plus more

    Do people think GTA IV will be coming out with a PC platform or not?
    That's the only way I'll buy it! If they don't come out with a PC version they will miss a whole lot of sales!

    will be best gta game yet. it better be as good as gta sa, and the graphics should be great. if gta iv looks like saints row, than that's going to be one h***uva game!!!

    Another PS3 exclusive bites the dust (Though to the suprise of no one, seeing as GTA:SA was multiplatform)

    Now all that needs to happen is MGS 4 subsistence/substance on Xbox360 and we'll be all set.

    I personally think it'll be better on PS3 because of the specs.But X360 owners will be happy that they will have it to,and even on the same day.

    The market is so big now that 3 consoles can easily coexist, and it's just silly to think otherwise. This, however, will mean the PS3 will have a hard time getting up and running. I think that the overwhelmingly huge budgets it will take to make PS3 games look noticeably better than 360 games or have enough content to fill a Blu-Ray won't come until around 10 million consoles worth of market penetration. Until then, they'll be on a level playing field of gameplay, with only Sony's exclusives bridging the 200 dollar gap, along with overcoming the 360's ever-expanding library advantage. This means that these announcements are very bad things.

    You all can say that 360 has a lackluster game line-up, but you'd have to ignore facts in light of the fantastic releases in all genres that came in 2006 and will come in 2007. I was initially a Wii supporter because the thing is so much fun (play any multiplayer game on it and please try to disagree) and I rooted for the underdog. Naturally, I was hoping for the PS3 to tank, which it didn't, really. Sony took a risk by putting an overpowered game machine on the market, and it is ahead of its time. Eventually, PS3 will put out games that are just stunning, but until then, let's face the fact that they aren't putting out enough games to bridge the gap. The reason Nintendo is doing better is because it made Wii Sports, which gave every customer (along with their $249.99-having friends) the opportunity to experience the kind of infectious fun that their system can produce the moment they open the box. PS3 was a fun machine that sold itself on power alone, and while has the capabilities to do extraordinary things, consumers see products, they don't see promises. Things like this damage the PS3, and there's no way around it.

    Since Saint's Row was so good...(!) I'm hoping that GTA:IV will be able to up to bring the genre back to being respectful again. As for not being PS3 exclusive: who cares? It just means my friends that have 360s can play it too! And I can laugh at them and their loading times! Joking.

    I m a huge GTA and PlayStation fan and I m sorry to see that the GTA series is slipping away from the PS. I m just hoping that Rockstar will realize the superiority of the PS3 and will come to it s senses...Anyway, can t wait for the GTA IV
