E3 06: Golden Axe sharpened for PS3, 360

Classic franchise revived on next-gen consoles by developer Secret Level; action-RPG to be released in 2007.

LOS ANGELES--In early April, Sega announced that it had purchased Secret Level, a San Francisco-based developer, which would "re-create a classic Sega franchise." Up until now, the identity of said franchise was kept behind closed doors.

Today, the re-created franchise was revealed as Golden Axe, which is getting a second life on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Whereas the classic was a beat-'em-up, the new Golden Axe will be an action role-playing game and will appear sometime in 2007.

It's unclear as to whether the original game's stereotypical characters will be included in the new version, but the ability to ride on the back of beasts or take on foes on foot will return, as will the emphasis on balancing both brawn and magic.

Secret Level has a variety of games in various genres under its belt. Among them are America's Army: Rise of a Soldier, Karaoke Revolution, and Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds.

Golden Axe has not yet been rated or priced.

    Dude I never liked the old game, but this new one looks really cool. Riding the beasts sounds like the best part. Besides the nudity I guess. Who said their was going to be nudity?

    I love golden axe and have played it since i was young but they are going to ruin the it with this game because there is going to be nude and you can only be the chick

    I hope they will add an arcade mode to this game. Because that's what Golden Axe is, an arcade beat'em up. That should support two players as well. A vs. mode would be cool too.

    I usually don't like remakes but I look forward to seeing what this'll be like. PS: They are complete and utter bastards if they don't make it for PC...

    Just a few weeks ago,i played ff7 again.I was soo disgusted by it that i swore to give up rpgs.....but this game and a few others look like they can change my mind.

    Yes I loved Golden Axe and this means that Streets of Rage 4 is coming soon. Streets of Rage 2 was my favorite game of all time. There is a God!

    They have already brough back shinobi and altered beast on the Playstation 2. Gloden Axe and streets of rage are just the next step, It was just a matter of time, shame its so far away.

    It seems that everyone that owns Golden Axe has Streets of Rage. They must have gotten that combo genisis game cartrige too.

    Golden Axe was a cool game for its time (at least I had pleny of fun spending money on the arcade). this one should be interesting to see how it comes (specially with such a huge jump from past to nextgen)

    It would be great to see the same characters and enemies in full 3D like iD did with Doom and Quake.
    A new Streets of Rage would be amazing and Shinobi (I'm pretty sure EVERYONE had those 3 games)

    I remember when me and my dad would play Co-op Golden Axe all day, back when I was like... 6 or 7. I thought that was the best game ever. I always used the Viking/Dwarf guy who had the Lightning magic.

    Ooooh YEAH. Wow, didn't see this one coming. An Action/RPG set in Golden Axe wrold would be awesome. I remember playing this in the arcade yonks ago and them the Megadrive version which was even better tha the arcade version. Can't wait to see and hear more about this.

    For those of us that remember the amazing master system classic (and blatant zelda rip-off) Golden Axe Warrior... let's just hope they do this right from the ground up... If I see any more sega classics screwed and rehashed to disgust (sega arcade classics - ps2) I'm seriously going to give up on this company... Which hurts comming from a Sega kid since 1986....

    Golden Axe! Nice! I see alot of "Streets of Rage needs to be remade"... that was good, but Golden Axe was way better than Streets of Rage.

    This is one of the best games for the Genesis and in the arcades (if I remember well). I hope that they can use the new hardware to make a great game. This one should be a great game.
