Take-Two eyes Wii baseball

Company CFO Karl Winters sees Nintendo's next-gen console as destination for its MLB 2K series, other sports games.

After the Nintendo Wii's impressive showing at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, more companies are looking at the machine as a viable platform for their products. The latest to jump on the bandwiigon is Take-Two Interactive, publisher of games such as the Grand Theft Auto and Civilization series.

In a postearnings conference call with investors and analysts, Take-Two CFO Karl Winters fielded a question with regards to the company's plans for the Wii.

"The reception this platform received at the E3 show, you know, is one that makes us take a real strong look at it," he said. "And as we grow our sports business, there are opportunities with our sports games to extend them to the Wii system, particularly if you look at baseball where we have exclusive arrangement, as well as, you know, some of the other sports games, which would play extremely well on the Wii product, the nonlicensed league ones."

He went on to say that the appearance of 2K Sports games on the Wii would likely happen in late 2007 or 2008. The company's MLB 2K franchise is, as Winters mentioned, a likely candidate to appear on the Wii. Take-Two currently owns the third-party rights to make MLB-licensed games.

Aside from the baseball portion of Wii Sports, Nintendo has not yet announced a first-party baseball game for the Wii. The company did have a baseball game in the works for the GameCube, titled Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball, but eventually canceled it. Some presumed it was canceled to develop that series on Nintendo's next-gen console.

    NIntendo may not have the power to compete with the 360 and PS2, but their game library continues to impress me. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii outsells either the 360 or the PS3, it's in an interesting cross-market that will attract both high-end users and casual gamers.

    Take-Two very late to the Wii bandwagon. But seeing a Wii baseball game with the controller would be cool. But they need to bring the Grand Theft Auto series to the Wii. That would be very interesting. That would tell everybody that the Wii is not just for kids. It for everybody. Take-Two would make even more money if that happen.

    This is very possible since the Wii would expand on newer ways to play games. If Take-Two decides otherwise then chances are that they will later. If they don't at all... they'll miss out.

    It's good to read that Take Two will release some games for the Wii. I hope that as they are more comfortable with the console (and hopefully great sales numbers for the console) they could start putting some of their other franchises into the console. That would be really sweet.

    Every sports game from take two could get the Wii treatment if they put their minds to it. Baseball is a good start as long as it plays well, and make the pitching and batting fun and make them quite in depth but not so people can startt playing some baseball, we might get a really gd quality new baseball game here. And i probably wont buy it but i dont think people would really go out of their way to get MLB right now, it will be shown at E3 and stuff.

    Maquis, that actually is pretty natural. The GC didn't sell as much as the other two consoles, and Take2 want themselves to sound something like a company for "elder than 6 years old" people, wilst the GC was rumoured to be for younger ages (Which was a lie, anyway). So, instead of ignoring them and doing such a foolish move, we could actually try the game, and if we like it buy it. Not judge by the fact that very few companies made game for the GC and others ignored it. ;

    Good luck Take2! Good luck Nintendo! Congratulations for rulling the market Wii! XP

    Developers better respect and capitalize on the Wii more than they did on the 'Cube. Most of the time, the 'Cube got the shaft.
