Majesco grapples with Nacho Libre for DS
Publisher details first US wrestling game for Nintendo's portable; release set for October.
In the upcoming Jack Black film Nacho Libre, a Mexican priest, desperate to raise money to fund his orphanage, turns to the world of professional wrestling to make a buck.
It's an oft-repeated story at this point. Lucha Libre fans may know it as the true story of luchador/cleric Fray Tormenta. Jean Reno fans may remember his version of the role in The Man in the Golden Mask. Tekken fans may recognize it as the backstory of the tiger-masked King.
The story is returning to gaming now, and not just in the next installment of Tekken. Majesco Entertainment today revealed a few more details about its game based on Nacho Libre, and moved its release date up a month from November to October.
In Nacho Libre, players will be able to take control of more than 11 luchadors including Nacho himself, who will be voiced by Jack Black. Majesco is promising four play modes, four-player wireless brawls, a slate of minigames that will make use of the DS touch screen, arenas pulled straight from the film, and "a range of over-the-top wrestling attacks."
The game is being developed by Budcat Creations, which handled the PlayStation 2 port of Psychonauts. The team has also cited the Nintendo 64 wrestling games developed by AKI as providing inspiration for Nacho Libre's design.
