Retail Radar: PSP to get EA retro comp

GameStop details 14-game collection of old-school classics, says Electronic Arts is bringing Syndicate, Ultima, Wing Commander, and more to PSP.

Publishers like Capcom, Sega, Midway, Taito, and Namco have been offering retro-themed compilations for years on a variety of platforms. However, the biggest third-party publisher of them all, Electronic Arts, has generally shied away from the practice, other than a few offerings such as the recent Command & Conquer: The First Decade collection.

That might be changing, if a new GameStop product listing is accurate. According to the retailer, Electronic Arts is jumping into the retro trend headfirst with EA Replay for the PSP. Slated for release October 3 with a price tag of $29.99, the compilation will let players relive 14 of the publisher's back-catalog offerings, including fondly remembered hits like Syndicate, Ultima VII: The Black Gate, Road Rash, Wing Commander, and Jungle Strike. Some of the games will support head-to-head multiplayer action, all will be playable in widescreen or normal views, and all of them will allow players to save their games at any time. The site even says it will include unlockable game art.

The full list of games listed for the compilation is included below, along with their first release dates and systems. Given the difficulties inherent in porting a keyboard-and-mouse control scheme to PSP, it is likely that the compilation would feature shrunken-down versions of the games' console versions, so those are the dates and systems given below.

B.O.B.--1993--SNES and Genesis
Budokan--1990--Genesis
Desert Strike--1993--SNES and Genesis
Jungle Strike--1993--SNES and Genesis
Haunting Starring Polterguy--1993--Genesis
Mutant League Football--1993--Genesis
Road Rash--1992--Genesis, later on 3DO
Road Rash II--1993--Genesis
Road Rash III--1995--Genesis
Syndicate--1995--SNES, 3DO, Jaguar
Ultima: The Black Gate--1994--SNES
Virtual Pinball--1993--Genesis
Wing Commander--1993--SNES
Wing Commander: The Secret Missions--1993--SNES

Please note, while retailer listings frequently jump the gun on publishers' product announcements, they should not be taken as final confirmation of a game's existence; nor should the absence of a listing be considered as proof that a game isn't coming to a given platform.

Mutant League Hockey would have been much better choice...and I hate hockey.

Also you can get all these games from any ROM or Emulation site so why would anyone buy this.

I hope they do some work to improve the games, though. All the Road Rash games from 1-3 suffered from severe slow down and mega choppy frame rates making it hard to play in many instances. The PSP has plenty of processing power to smooth it over, provided they work on that area in the emulation.

Of course, from a business point of view that probably won't affect sales, so with low ROI such a decision wouldn't be made.

Bit of a shame, really, if you can play a better version of the game on a homebrew emulator running on your PSP. Time will tell if this compilation nails it.

btw, although there are some really good games there, and plenty of gaming hours included, they still could easily include more games.

With the lack of good games on the PSP these compilations could sell very well.

    Digital-Devil says:
Most of these you can get on ROMS though...or on the Wii as downloads
    ------------------

    Yeah, but:
#1: You don't have a Wii yet xD
#2: On the Wii, you will need to PAY for every single retro game too.
    #3: 15++ years old games from SNES and GENESIS on a non-portable next-gen console... i don't know.

I don't are looking for all the old school games on the Wii or retro games on XBL. In a handled is another history. this compilation on the DS could be great too.

I agree with Schillinger why isn't Urban Stike in the EA collection it's like SEGA are releasing one and they haven't included Street Of Rage 1,2 or 3 for that matter. They are putting in Golden Axe but not the S.O.R franchise which is stupid.

Everyone I know loves the S.O.R games my fav was no.2 instead there putting that stupid Eternal Champions in it. Which was probably the worst ever fighting game created for the Mega Drive. But like the fine print says they could change the line-up at any time before release.

    Posted Aug 15, 2006 6:02 am GMT

That's a surprisingly nice list of games to include in one package. I admit, I'm borderline shocked to see it's EA doing it and it didn't end up as three separate collections with a ton of crappy filler.

Personally as a 360 owner, I'd love to see some of those as Xbox Live Arcade titles. Syndicate with multiplayer Live support would be epic.

Why would a SNES game be on the PSP??

For the same reason that all FFs that were on Nintendo except III were remade on PS1?

People played wing commander with a keyboard and mouse? I used a joystick. I don't know why they'd need to adapt the SNES version for that. All you need is an analog stick and some weapons and comm control buttons. Oh, and the afterburner, of course.
