TGS 06: Sony demos PS3 interface

Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison shows off the next-gen console's media functions, including photos, video, chat, and Web browsing, at Sony's HQ.

TOKYO--Following Ken Kutaragi's standing-room-only keynote address Friday morning, Sony held a smaller, invitation-only event at its headquarters in Aoyama. The gathering was designed to allow select media additional time with the PlayStation 3 and to show off some surprises the console maker had in store.

GS @ Sony HQ

Phil Harrison greets the crowd.

Sony Worldwide Studios head Phil Harrison opened the event and encouraged those in attendance to play the games that were peppered throughout the room--previews of which can be found on GameSpot's TGS 2006 After a quick summary of the announcements that came out of Ken Kutaragi's keynote address earlier in the day, Harrison offered up some surprises of his own.

The first surprise was a sneak peek at the PlayStation 3 user interface, which shouldn't be too surprising to those who saw glimpses of it at E3. Before jumping into the demo, Harrison asked that the interface not be photographed or filmed, as it was still a work in progress. Following his request he fired up the monitor at a kiosk attached to a nearby PS3.

The PS3 interface is based on the cross media bar that should be familiar to PlayStation Portable owners and expands on the features offered by its portable cousin. The screen featured a blue color scheme and an artsy swath of white that pulsed in the background. The first section on the bar was the user-profiles area where Harrison noted that those using the system would create and store their unique profiles.

The next section was a system settings tab that offered many options for customizing the PlayStation 3's various functions, such as audio and video. Harrison called out the network update subsection in system settings, noting that, much like the way the PSP's firmware is upgraded with new functionality, the PS3 interface will be tweaked and enhanced postrelease.

The next section on the media bar was the photo option, which will feature enhanced functionality thanks to the PS3's graphics processor and the cell. Harrison started out with a look at several pictures--most of which were of cats--shown in 1080p similar to how one views images on a PSP.

However, the PS3 will offer several different ways to check out photos. Harrison selected a slideshow option that arranged his photos as if they were set down on a flat white surface. As he cycled through them, dates were displayed in a handwritten font. Harrison stated that this was an example of one of many slideshow functions that will let people display their photographs in unique ways. The ornate interactivity comes courtesy of the PS3's RSX processor, which allows photos to be moved around like 3D objects.

The next tab was the music section, which featured a 3D visualizer that used the RSX to create images in time with the music being played. Next to it was a video tab, which is where users will queue up their Blu-ray discs and stored video content for viewing.

The game section is, like its PSP counterpart, the centerpiece for game content on the system. That is where gamers will be able to boot up games and manage their saves for PS3, PlayStation 2, and original PlayStation games. It will also be where they can access game content downloaded from the PlayStation Network Platform.

The next section on the bar shown by Harrison was a new "friends" tab, where players will be able to see if friends are online. Messages can be sent via a predictive-text onscreen keyboard or any USB keyboard connected to the system. In addition, players can engage in voice and video chat with people on their friends list using a microphone or camera peripheral.

The last section of the PS3 media bar was the Web browser, which Harrison showed was capable of displaying multiple windows. Harrison called up a few Web pages-- including the TGS 2006 home page--and toggled between displaying the lot as thumbnails and focusing on one to view it full screen.

Harrison ended the demonstration of the media bar with a quick demo of the PS3's network-communication functionality, which lets consumers use their PSPs to check out all the media on their PS3s wirelessly.

Harrison's opening chat concluded with a sneak peek at a PS3 game not playable on the TGS show floor, NBA 07. Though the game was less than complete, Harrison noted that it ran at 1080p much like several games on the TGS show floor, including Ridge Racer 7, Gran Turismo HD, and a handful of others.

That's a lie, you don't know that, you assume that because Sony says so. Don't trust what Sony says. They've lied before and you know it. I'm deeply dissapointed in Sony's handling and promoting of their new console. They've served us "info" at E3 2005 and then to deny some "info" and then again just make up a controller after the Wii consept. How can you trust Sony after all the dissapointments they've given us?

theres a saying that u get what u pay for. In the last game generation I owned an ps2 and an xbox and I enjoyed the xbox more as it opened up my eyes to online gaming. I believe that online gaming is really going to be a big factor. Online games have more replay value that offline because there is more to it than collecting all the items and its more of a challenge and until I see a solid online experience I cannot choose between sony and nintendo. The xbox 360 is a great console with a great online service even if u have to pay. In my opinion ps3 has what it takes to take the cake because motion played games are cool but I cant play does games when im sick in bed plus if i wanna play old nintendo games ill get an emulator for my pc and this is coming from a fan of all console I love zelda I love halo and I love metal gear solid. Remember Y2K didnt end the world and nintendos controller isnt going to reinvent gaming

"lets face it nintendo isnt even in the running here and they havent been for years if i wanna wave a tv remote around my dishnetwork remote will do just fine"

A bit arrogant? I don't know about you but as a console owner for 15 years I'm beginning to get bored of the same games being re-textured and released. I might consider getting a PS3 nearer 2007 fall when the price is lowered and more 'killer' titles have been released - but I'm happy with a Wii this fall.

I use my PSP for everything and games are just another function. Mostly, I just watch movies and listen to music on it and I'll play a game if I have the time. All those features will keep me busy for a long time, with or without games.

PS3 is not a computer, and 90% of people will not use the photo, web browsing, and other non-gaming crap after the first week of owning the thing. Just like PSP and 360.

most ppl will just buy the thing bc its PS3. if u like what they have to offer in terms of other features, or lookin for a kind of replacement computer then this is perfect. thats all there is to it. i mean think about it. if u like to play games on high power computers, the playstation virtually is the next best thing and u still get normal controller options. non of that keyboard and mouse crap

I already own a 360 and plan on buying a ps3 aond im not a fanboy of either. I just wanted to say that even though the ps3 has better processing power than the 360 on paper this does not mean better graphical power. Honestly the ps3 and 360 are probably gonna be pretty close in graphics ( just speculating here based on hardware specs) but the ps3's processing power, if harnessed correctly, will allow developers to make the game play much better, I.E give all the enemies in the game individual A.I. All this depends on the developers and we probably wont see anthing amazing out of the ps3 a couple years after launch.

i cant wait for the ps3 to finally come out here.im not sure if i will buy one right away but will be at walmart playing the demos.i dont care to play games on pc anymore only because of the annoying patches and games that sluggish for no reason.also the technology on pc is still not where it needs to be as even the fastest computer struggles in some games.at least with consoles they can do what they want and not worry about those with slower systems.yeah consoles have there share of problems but nothing like a pc could have.so my opinion pc wasnt made for games.so im going to be using mine for work from now on.

Now im a sony fan just like every one else i had ps1 ps2 and ill have ps3 but not because im loyal to sony but to the franchise games there going to have such as MGS4 lol and thats really the only selling point for me but lets face it every one that is loyal to the sony brand really isnt that loyal at all because theres always going to be an exclusive game on the 360 that someone is going to want and i say the 360 because lets face it nintendo isnt even in the running here and they havent been for years if i wanna wave a tv remote around my dishnetwork remote will do just fine and i could even change the channel if i want but my point is that i have a 360 and i love it and ill also have a ps3 because there going to have games the 360 and vise versa and ive always had every single system for the same reason, ive had ps2,xbox,gamecube all at once,so lets not let them try to pick and choose who were going to buy, lets just buy them both and we all win.

The PSP has an attractive user friendly GUI. Its almost scary to think of vast numbers of people using a PS3 instead of a PC/DVD/DDR. Add a word processor, a mouse, printer + keyboard... -Hey maybe one day only devs will use PC's.

360 is great if you like to keep paying for online functions every month for the forseeable future. And for that monthly fee, you don't even geet a web browser lol. Good luck in Japan with that setup
Yes i am very happy with my 360 on line i pay £40 per year to download loads of free demos & game movies for an excellent service drawn no doubt from MS years of Software experience .................. and Sony online for free whats the quality of that going to be like .remember its free ??????
PS THE LAST CONSOLE TO HAVE WEB BROWSER WAS THE BELOVED DREAMCAST.

Everyone wants to talk about how the ( CPU ) is so much more powerful then the xbox360, can anyone name a game on the PS3 that graphics surpass the 360?? Hmmmmm no you cant, they are both equal in power its just what the devlopers do with the power that matters and if anyone here knows anything about games then you know that in the current generation it took developers years before they figured out how to utilize the horse power they were given i.e. metal gear solid sons of liberty was by far the best looking game on the ps2 and it came years after the systerm was out and so did many other games that followed because it can take years before they figure out how to use the power they are given,so before anyone starts talking about which system is more powerful give it sometime.

HA! Well enjoy your flash games on your $600 machine. Seems like a wise investment. And I am not in denial, I just don't care. A web browser does not a a computer make. And with the track record of sony there is no way I am hooking a PS3 upto my network, who knows what will get put onto my computer (which I might add pwns anything the PS3 will be capable of) and I will use it for all the browseing and "flash" gameing that I want to do (which, in refference to the flash gameing, consequently is 0). But to each thier own, enjoy your machine man. I sure as hell wont be.

some of you guys need to take this talk to the system wars forum. This annoucement was nice and all..but I really want to buy a PS3 for the games it can play. Sometimes people, "corporations" loose sight of what made them great....Exmpl: coleco........ Sony is putting a whole lot of stuff into a system that was origianlly aimed at gamers that "they" want to be the sole center piece of entertainment. The last system played dvd's and I still bought a DVD player for the entertainment room. (good thing too...seems that PS2 was constantly reading Disc read error) I still have a computer with high speed internet. and No idon't have Vonage yet....(why?) Let's just say...."it's not good to put all your eggs in one basket!" It never has been and never will be a good Idea to to that.......really....how many people own TV/DVD/VCR combo sets???? what's happens when one of those systems breaks down???? yeah..you get pissed!!!

And other ps3 fanboys, please for the ump-teenth time, #60 internet gaming is free (please visit xbox.com and look at the silver package) there is extra content that you can subscribe to but it is optional. And you can't tell me Sony is givieng you completley free internet access. There will be a charge of somesort to DL patches and extras. This is Sony here, they are a conglomerate not the "hey we like you guys so here is something that we could make money on for free" company. Give me a break. Secondly as for a web browser, HA. Who cares. Because up to this point the internet has been completley and totally in accessable to the masses. I'm guessing you just are excited because you have more access to you porn sites, well congrats.

The ps3 slaughters the X-box 360 in processing power but its price is a kick in the balls for americans. I am Canadian and we have a electronics law that only allows the ps3 and the x-box 360 to go up to a certain price so for me there both cheaper than in the U.S. but they are still expensive.
    -=-=-=-=-=
sorry not entirely true. they both use the 7-bit PPC archeticture. Horrible for floating point and crunching hard written programming. HOWEVER, because there are more inside of the PS3, that doesnt mean anything because they are are controlle by ONE CPU which have the seven talking to it. You can get exactly the same result out of both systems w/ the same performance....the end

it seems cheeply generic to me...like they spent a total of 5 minutes designing it. I prefer Microsoft's interface. The only thing good about Sony's is that it doesn't cover up half your screen when you pull it up in the middle of a game.

Oh and btw megaman_legends...I was a Nintendo fan before MS released the XBox, not a Sony fan. So I never abandoned a console (still love Ninty way more than MS).

the ps3 makes up what it lacks in rsx power in processing power, so what you say is true, it can process a great deal of data specifically in comparison to the 360, its not ideal for consistantly outputting state of the art graphics. xbox and ps3 and equal in graphics power.

    I like it when people say they're getting a PS3 around xmas...lol. That's rich.

Oh, I'll prob get one eventually, don't get me wrong. Nothing in this article has me any more prepared to stand in line for some wack bundle, pay an eBay scalper, or otherwise even attempt to get a launch system, though. In fact, I'll wait the year + for the price drop, because I can already look at pictures of cats and surf the net...lol...and oh yeah, I DO have a 360. All I really care about are games. There are maybe two or three games that are "exclusive" to PS3 (for the time being) that I'd like to play, but I can wait. The vast majority of us will have no choice anyway.
