PS3 launch rewards few

The hardcore and hearty get their consoles in Japan, but most gamers in Nippon are left out in the cold, go home empty-handed.

TOKYO--For the hearty souls willing to brave the chill of a November night in Tokyo, it didn't take more than a few minutes past midnight to know if a PlayStation 3 would be theirs--those lucky gamers were handed a numbered ticket that guaranteed them a unit. Then, it was just a matter of waiting out the hours until the stores of Shinjuku and Akihabara opened their shutters.

But for the general masses that woke up at more reasonable hours Saturday, the best they could do was secure a raffle ticket and hope that lady luck was on their side when they returned to the store when the raffle was being held.

While there may have been enough PS3s for the hardcore gamers who wanted them badly, there was no denying that Sony's Japan allocation was too slim to match the demand.

As the countdown to the PlayStation 3 launch in Japan ticked down to its last minutes, GameSpot editors headed to Shinjuku's Yodobashi Camera, where Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi made an appearance during the PSP launch back in 2004.

SCE head of worldwide studios Phil Harrison was spotted for a short moment just before the scheduled launch time, at 7 a.m., but most eyes were peeled for Kutaragi, who was expected to show up and reprise his role leading the PSP launch in '04.

Kutaragi did eventually appear at the store as expected, but unfortunately, it was well over an hour after the opening hour and drama of the launch activities. He had picked the Bic Camera main branch outlet in Yurakucho to hand out the first console--to a young eager customer from China we were told.

At Shinjuku's Yodobashi camera, the first person in line was a 22-year-old student who had been waiting in line since 6 p.m. on Friday. While he looked tired and worn from the long wait, he shined a grin as he walked away with a PS3 and Mobile Suit Gundam game.

Similar scenes were taking place in other locations throughout Tokyo, most selling PS3s without preorders or raffle tickets. The Ikebukuro Bic Camera had over 1,200 customers with numbered tickets, while the Shibuya Tsutaya, the official launch location for Microsoft's Xbox and Xbox 360, had about 300 units to sell.

While hardcore gamers returned home happily with their PS3, it was another story with the general public who weren't aware that the PS3 would be supplied in only limited numbers.

From around 8 a.m. on, we saw dozens of people approaching stores only to see "sold out" signs in front. It was pretty apparent what was going to happen next.

To see how things were going at stores giving away the raffle tickets, we went to the Shinjuku Bic Camera to see if there was a line. To our surprise, over 400 people had formed a line by around 9 a.m.--when the store was scheduled to hand out raffle tickets. But soon, a staffer came out and held up a sold-out sign at the end of the line, telling the unlucky stragglers they had no chance at all of buying a unit.

A similar scene was happening at Sakuraya, which only had about 20 units each of the 20GB and 60GB models. There was still a line of about 200 people even after the scheduled closing time of the raffle ticket distribution.

In Akihabara, Sofmap's main branch had about 300 people lined up to get raffle tickets, with everyone holding umbrellas to cope with the heavy rain. Similar to the line at Shinjuku Bic Camera, a staffer eventually came up and held up a sold-out sign, turning away any additional people trying to line up after 9:30 a.m. when the store was to hand out its tickets.

Generally, those waiting in line to get raffle tickets were a very different group from the customers who waited overnight. The crowds we saw in the overnight lines consisted of hardcore gamers, foreigners, and homeless people hired by scalpers. They were mostly male, and many of them wore heavy clothing to survive the cold, additionally prepared with portable chairs and handheld gaming machines.

On the other hand, the lines that formed at raffle locations this morning consisted of more casually dressed people with a good number of female customers, parents with children, and a few elderly folks also lining up for the system.

Sony seemed to have anticipated there might not be enough PS3s for the casual consumers at launch, which would explain why the company seemed to have been holding back on its mass-market ad campaign. While Sony had posted numerous billboards at train stations and had run a flight of TV ads in prime time, the company didn't begin its push until just a week ago. In comparison, Nintendo has been running Wii ads on TV for nearly a month, even through the console isn't due until December.

Given the high demand of the PS3, the console is already selling at inflated prices on auction sites. The 60GB model, which sold for an average price of 59,800 yen ($508) retail is selling now for around 90,000 yen ($765) on Yahoo Japan's auction site. The 20GB model, which retails for 49,980 yen ($425), is going for 70,000 yen ($595).

Sony expects to ship 100,000 units every week after today's launch, which should give it total sales of about 400,000 units by the time the Wii is released in December. Coincidently, Nintendo expects 400,000 units to be available on the Wii's launch day in Japan.

Then the console race in Japan begins in earnest.

OMG, seen the sells for the ps3 at the Walmart near me, they were sold out faster than anything that hit the store, it didnt even last 5 mins, and everyone that bought one, was fully preped, they all payed with cash, up front that was amazing cant wait till one of my friends own one, I done bought me a laptop, otherwise I would have beenone of those people waiting in line, and my lapttop costs more than a ps3, and its just a computer, any other option, I would have gotten the ps3 no sweat

When the 1st vids for ps3 games were released yonder back, I was kind of impressed, although I already new they were just movies. Ud be hard pressed seeing developers forking out time and money to make a outstanding game on a ps3. Their making games for money not for our personal enjoyment, long as the game looks nextgenish there basically happy with it, so xbox360 look alikes with a odd few worthy of graphical achievement down the track...although cod3 running crap house on the ps3 kind of makes u wonder about future games to be released.

Xbox360 ive been bored to high heaven with, but I will be getting gears of war soon, although i already know it will be a 8/10 in my books and no more its something worth playing for a change.

Wii is pritty cheap and has a few games im interested in so early 2007 i will probably grab one.

Pc kind of bored, but still has more variety and gameplay to offer then any of my consoles.

Hopefully the gaming industry picks up a bit methinks, to much same old same old going around these days, a bit more then graphical updates is needed to make things interesting again.

Sony or Microsoft or any company for that matter, as rule of business companies will always try to release a product as soon as possible especially before the holidays. And we all know that in retail, Xmas is one of the biggest months to sell and capitalize on profit. There will always be a shortage when there is so much demand for a product. Even if sony manufactured double than it expected it would still be sold out. And dont give me because its $600 that people wont buy it, because they are! I am not either a PS3 or a Xbox360 fan boy I follow the games. But hands down from what is offered compareably with the x360 you get so much more. Blue Ray players alone cost close to $1000. And if X360 was not so rushed to get it out there HDDVD would already be part of the system, instead of forking out $200, oh wait that's $600 dollars too, hmmm... And heck, I probably won't get one till march, thats how long I waited for my X360. All I have to say MGS4 is not out yet so im not so rushed to buy one yet. And for those who can afford to buy two like myself we will do so... Because of the fact that I follow games, and I support the game developers and designers! And last but not least, Gears of War is the only game on X360 that is worthy of next gen....

People don't buy video games because they are powerful, they buy them because they are fun. People would rather be able to spend a few hours having a great time, instead of boasting about their new system. In my previous paragraph I imply that the PS3 is not fun, let me explain why. 1) Sony is inexperience and outmatched when it comes to online gaming 2) 360 = better games PS3 = expensive games that are made simply to make money 3) You cannot share, rent or sell previously used PS3 games due to their security features.

Damn!!! please this has nothing to do with me having a 360 or anything like that I will get a PS3 eventually once the price is down. But what is freaking me out is that there are alot of people pretty much accross gaming site forums stating that they won't get a PS3 anytime soon, it's a little disconcerning and half of those people are saying they will rather get a Wii or 360. Oh and then there are those who already own a 360 (use to own PS2) and are now saying they won't switch back? Any answers orspeculations on this surprisinf trend are welcome. Oh also X-play had a poll which asked "Are you going to get a PS3?" most people responded no! What's up with that? only 7.9% yes out 100% and lots of people watch this show.

WOW!!! I don't think I can Agree with this.(The PS3 making Terrain look better)

    Batizoz.
Lol, PS3 will also have Microtransactions. Are you twelve or something? A hobo could afford Xbox live. People make such a big deal over the cell processor, blu-ray, and reality senthesiezer. It's really not all that more efficient than Xbox 360. Sure, it can make terrain look better from a distance. WOW. Sure though, instead of actually listening label everyone who doesn't meet your "standards" a fanboy. Then again, are you not a Fan boy yourself since you just love "Japanese Technology".

Let's take a look at Ridge Race 7(PS3 at 1080p) compare to Ridge Racer 6 (360 at 720p). Even at a higher res. PS3 still looks not as good and it's missing a ton of **** Now let's compare Call of Duty 3 , Textures for PS3 look like Crap!! compare to those on the 360 again at a higher Res. So my question to those fanboys who still uphold and Regard the PS3 as better more tech advanced hardware than the 360. Why are we seeing these things? Oh I know your asnwer. It's the developers. Let's see six 6 months down the row when this is still happening. As for the American Hardware issue, I have never had an issue with my 360 and I got it when it first came out. Also please before you guys start awarding the Tech part to PS3 compare the Tech specs for both machines. Oh one last thing Gundam review on IGN was horrible, they said that the video they showed at the Tokyo game show was not what the game looked like that it was complete different game (So it was a fake) Read it here:http://ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745882p1.html.

  • Marcus878

    Posted Nov 15, 2006 7:41 am GMT

Personally, I don't see why anyone would want to buy a PS3 at launch. Launch is the time where the console is at its weakest in performance wise (overheating, technical faults), games wise (not reaching full potential of the console),and features wise( online content, updates etc).

Being, an aussie user of Gamespot, I'll be forced to wait till March 07 like the rest of the PAL regions around the world. Even that date I am not comfortable with the history of Sony. But, either way its also a good thing as consoles will be beggining to start their peak in performance and features. Honestly, buy the console you want; be it the 360, Wii or PS3 when you believe is the right moment for the console. Personally, thats close to this time in 2007 or when MGS4 is released kidding!

Hey man, I was reffering to the WII "On The Spot Marathon", where the closest thing to a serious game was Zelda (but still a little to childish). Sure, there will be M games on WII, but just like you said (i.e RE4) it will be ported to PS3 or Xbox 360 most likely. So why get a WII with only few serious games. Even if they don't port them, it's a bad investmen, for me at least. Where on the other hand the PS3 has: FFXIII, MGS4, RE5, DMC4, Heavenly Sword, Resistance - Fall of Man, Assassin's Creed and many more. All great games with intense action and story, and of course most of them M rated.

Quite frankly I don't see what the big deal is...

If they waited till march, the people that can't buy it now won't get it till then, and if they release it now, then the people that can't buy it won't buy it till later. Yes, they are releasing it a little early, and won't have enough shipments for the "average consumer"... But... How many "average consumers" actually have $600 for a flippin video game? Not many that I know of. I have also done the math, and found that the ps3 is cheaper then the 360 in a relative of sorts.

    Xbox Premium- $400
    2 Extra 20 GB hard drives- $200
    HD DVD Drive- $200
    Wi-Fi- $100

That's $900 for an xbox 360 with basically what the premium playstation 3 has... And the specs have proved that the playstation 3 is more powerful, the blu-ray players are extremely expensive, and it also has a better controller design... A 360 wireless controller will cost you $50 plus $20 for the charger... The ps3 gives you all of that for $50. Now... On the note about the wii... It just depends on what you like, and look for in games. Thats a matter of opinion, not of fact on paper. If you like graphics, speed, power, sony games, or anything like that, then the ps3 is for you... If you want something different, don't care about graphics, and like nintendo, then go with the wii.

I think the PS3 is just in a bad position right now. First off, the Wii has its own fan base and its own games and it's that uniqueness that will allow it to do well at market. Let's face it-graphics and horsepower aside, nothing else offers what the Wii does. So no matter when it launches, Nintendo fans will be Nintendo fans. The 360 and the PS3 are much more similar in terms of both games and hardware, so naturally their will be more competition between both of them. The only problem with that is (for the PS3) that the 360 has already launched with a solid set of games and taken much of the PS3's potential consumer base. (Yes I know many people are holding out for the PS3 anyway so don't bash.) I personally will buy the 360 just because I like the games and the XBOX has already made an impression on me with games like Halo (and sorry folks, just a few great games WILL do it for me). But if Sony wants to keep its dominance in the US, I think they should turn to the approach that Nintendo is taking and has always taken. Set yourself apart (it's not too late thanks to online updates, for expample), give the consumers something innovative, something that will attract attention and not just comparison with the 360. The last minute Sixaxis won't cut it for Sony. They have at their disposal the Ferrari of consoles and they will need to sit down, put their heads together, and ask "How can our system be DIFFERENT?" "How can our games be DIFFERENT"? Success will follow and even current 360 owners might decide two (UNIQUE) consoles are better than one.

ps3 is a little overrated and says it can do stuff that that other systems cant do. total bull. plus, i bet you it is really delicate for such a system of "superior" performance. On the other hand sony is a ok company, they need to stop copying get there ideas striaghit, and give more systems to the people.

Your just allowing scalpers to take advantage of the situation. 100,000 units is a rough estimate - considering their slow production rate I'd think the number is closer to 70-80k

actually the decline in new hardware for the video card sector is directly tied into the fact that consumers want a longer life for their money purcahsed, so that theory doesnt really hold up. And honestly, the only difference i see on what consoles have to offer me is the ps3 has motion sensor and the 360 doesnt. And no its not worth 200 more bucks. I could get a hd-dvd(the winning format) for that much. Regardless if you like it or not, consumers are stupid and they will see blu-ray and say "I dont have a blu-ray tv. but i do have a HD-tv. I'll get the hd-dvd". Sony wants to be the standard so bad they are risking their whole business for it. get whatever system you prefer. They will all sell out including Wii which has 10x's more units available then the ps3. So if you think that because a system sells out its good, your wrong. Its the games that matter and PS3D0 doesnt have any... and no i dont care about another ff or another played DMC. Give me something DIFFERENT and NEW please....

OMG. Get a life people! Ok so it's PS3. Whatever!
Stupid Sony didnt release enough units? Bad for them, and good for you!
That means you'll have more time to attend to your real life untill March.

I kind of want a PS3 too, but I'm by far not desperate. For $600 I shouldnt have to stand in line or pre-order. This thing should be delivered to me on a silver platter! Either way, if I'll never get a PS3, I wont feel bad for a second, and I advise to to do the same.

Sony is simply greedy. If they cared about their customers, they'd wait till March, when they'd have enough units for everyone. Bot no... They are so damn greedy, they wanted to sell whatever they have at this point so that they can at least get some kind of profit.

The way it is right now, is like discrimination/unequal treatment. If you stand in line all night, and you are a crazed maniac who is willing to sacrifice your time and your health for this crap, you're 1337 - you get a PS3.
But if you're a normal person with a life, you cant get a PS3, you're not 1337 enough. lol. F that!

I think that all three consoles will do just fine. they all got something different, the xbox360 is cheaper but has less features (no bluray ect ect) but the ps3 is very pricey. the wii is innovative and new, but can easily turn into a gimmick and it doesn't have the high level of graphics or storage-capacity. Non of you will win this fight about who is better, only the future can tell. Most games coming out for the ps3 are 'crappy', now, but that was also the case with the xbox360. In a year or so, the ps3 will also have it's halo 3 or gears of war. The future will show us who wins this fight, not you. So be a little respectfull and don't bash each others opions. I think we would all love to have every next gen console under our t.v. A lot of xbox360 owners are getting a bit jealous because the ps3 has more functions. Act adult or just civilized!

    Game on!

My god. Some of you guys are complete losers. Fighting over witch next gen console is better. You know how stupid you sound. And what is sad is some of you take it personaly. Get a God damn life. Who cares. Get a job and buy them all!

You obviously dont understand that a lot of us arent fighting for a certain system(well me anyays) and more so fighting to protect the buyer. But if you have 700 dollars to throw out your car window on the way home, go ahead. Because if you buy the first gen ps3 thats exactly what you'll be doing. I dont see the system making it past 2nd gen since it'll have so few owners that developers wont even bother making games to generate a decent profit. but like i said, you want to throw your money away. Go right ahead. Trash day is only 3 days away.

Playstation is pushing their luck. Just because their ps2 was popular and im still trying to figure out why so many people boyght did good it doesn't mean the ps3 is going to be good. People might as well go for the xbox 360 but personally i have my eye on the wii which i think will beat the competion. But all I know is that their is not enough supply for the ps3, it costs too much, its probably going to have a million problems with the ones that come out first and that sony is an evil company! They are like the microsoft of the computers and the ea games of the video game industry.

I have a feeling that the DS will sell a little bit more, weekly, than the PS3 at this rate.

"xangel0884 ... You sure seem more than interested with the x360. Good for you. Tell you what, why dont you go home sit on that comfy chair you've got, turn on that stupid machine of yours with all that American junk inside ... and play your favorite wacky game until you r satisfied. Maybe by this, you wouldnt have time to waste on a topic that concerns the PS3.
By the way, I am gonna buy a PS3 soon ... so, i'd definitely have money, but none of that to waste on an American piece of junk Oh, and dont go preaching people on what to buy or not ... peole have brains you know ... and they sure like to use them. Go play somewhere else "

The only piece of junk here is your arguement. It is absolutely garbage.

"Poor guys. Waiting out in the rain for hours. Honestly, it's not worth it. Maybe meeting a celebrity or winning a prize, but for a damn game console that's 600? I wouldn't do it for the Wii. Some people need to get their priorities straight."

You make me laugh. Stand in line for a celebrity or winning a prize. Suuure!!!! Celebrities are people, just like me. I'm not gonna stand in the rain just to catch a glimpse of their faces. As for winning a prize. Maybe some of us have better things to do, like working and making money and buying the stuff they need. As for myself, I would get a PS3 in 2008 or even later, but I don't muck the people who want to get one NOW and have fun playing on it.

As for the Japan launch, the people are obviously interested considering there are 300-400 when the store has only 20 or so units. PS3 will do just fine even in US and Europe.

And YES, it's all about the games. And I don't like FPS and sports so I don't care much for Xbox 360 and Gears of Wars. I like to have a story when I play a game. As for the WII, I've watched the marathon on Gamespot and here are my conclusions.

The motion controller looks very cool and new, but the games are crappy, for children (under 15). Not to mention the graphics. Implement the motion thingy on a M rated game and you've got my attention.

The PS3 has a lot of exclusive and a lot of sequels that I've been playing along the years. You've got graphics, story and good (maybe not great) gameplay so that's the console for me.

You want action with good graphics (no story, no depth) get a Xbxo360. You want innovative control and you don't mind kiddie games get a WII. If you want a good graphic, great story and some exclusives, get the PS3.
