Xbox Live downtime scheduled

Microsoft's online gaming service will go dark for 14 hours next week for a planned upgrade.

Xbox 360 gamers won't be able to answer the Call of Duty and the Gears of War will cease grinding (online, at least) for the better part of a day next week as Microsoft has notified Xbox Live users that the service is in for some downtime.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. PDT on Tuesday, March 27, Xbox Live will be unavailable for an expected 14 hours, according to Microsoft, while the publisher makes upgrades to the service. Eager 360 owners are advised not to get their hopes up speculating about possible upgrades; Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb posted on his blog that the changes are not a new dashboard update for the system. That's expected later this spring.

    Not yet back online.

Brean24: I believe 2:00PM Pacific Time is 4:00PM Central Time, which was two hours ago. (It's 4:00PM Pacific as I post this.)

"And LOL to all those of you who think you'll be able to work on your single player Xbox Live achievements without an Xbox Live connection."

...You do know achievements can be unlocked without connecting to Xbox Live, right? They're based on the profiles stored on the system, not on the actual Xbox Live servers. Now before you go off and insult someone else with incorrect information, think about what you have to say.

THIS WAS JUST POSTED BY MAJOR NELSON:

"This season's Xbox Live Maintenance is almost complete. The engineers have begun the final testing and preparation to bring the service back online. We have one outstanding issue before we can flip the switch, so that means that we're not back yet. I'll post another update when I have more details. I don't have an exact time when the service will be back online, and I'll post an update when I do."

    TIME STAMP IS 2:00pm

Don't expect for XBOX live to be up exactly at 2:00pm PT. Read the key words in the announcement, "unavailable for an (expected) 14 hours." Which means it could be down for longer.

Tell me, in these days of fully redundant clustered server systems, why does there need to be a 14 hour outage for paying customers? If my ISP did that to me, I'd quit and go elsewhere.

And what was the point of releasing the Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion early, when you need to be connected to Xbox Live in order to play it?!?

And LOL to all those of you who think you'll be able to work on your single player Xbox Live achievements without an Xbox Live connection.

I read the message when I got it yesterday but totally forgot about it and had to go online to figure out why I couldn't connect. Heh, silly me and my poor memory.

I hope they put out another great marketplace game tomorrow. They're 2/2 with TMNT Arcade being followed by SotN, both have been awesome.

I'll be playing SotN today since I can't get on live, no big deal.

I doubt if it will kill anyone, but I've seen other consoles that have manufacturers releasing upgrades on their main servers and for the consoles themselves that didn't have any downtime. Odd, but then again, it's Microsoft again.
