Nintendo raises forecasts

After a strong fourth fiscal quarter, Wii maker expects to beat previous sales estimate by more than $555 million.

While the Nintendo Wii was in high demand and low supply throughout the last holiday season, it was actually the company's DS handheld that most exceeded its expectations. Nintendo today announced that it was raising its financial forecasts across the board for the fiscal year ended March 31, "primarily due to robust trends in sales" for DS games and systems.

"Merchandise does not move in the January-March quarter--that is the norm in this industry," Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa was quoted in a Reuters report. "But ours somehow did."

Previously, Nintendo anticipated posting net sales of 900 billion yen ($7.6 billion) for the year, but today the company bumped that figure up more than $555 million to 966 billion yen ($8.1 billion). The company expects to release its full results for the fiscal year on April 26.

More games for the hardcore gamer and more that dont make you flail the wiimote around like an idiot (unless it's warioware, another Warioware for the Wii with more games might be cool)

People !! ... The future lies in the Handheld market .... mark my words ... as technology advances, and semi-conductors technology advances as well, you'll see more advance handhelds, that will take the place of consoles.

True ... but then .... Nintendo went through some rough times, I bet they learned a lesson, in this industry .... the fittest only survives .. its a fierce competition.

Nintendo is right to expect such high sales. The Wii is still sold out in most parts of the world, and those lucky to have one get tons of accessories for hdtv's, parties, friends and family! And the great line up means people will get 2 more games (besides Wii Sports) to enjoy! This all = $$$ for Nintendo, and I don't blame them for their high hopes and anticipations. Only time will tell...

Well, I don't like handhelds, and even I got too interested in a DS not to get one. Thing is, I gotta wait to see if I really want a Wii although I'm kind of considering it now...

"whats wrong with poeple who kkep asking for good games early on. Only some good games come onto a system early on. Big titles come much later when there is a larger fanbase and more stock so gamers who have been waiting for exclusives can go out and get the syetem."

That's how this entire market works. Companies release systems to get software out there, and whoever has the best software tends to get the most console sales. This is exactly what Nintendo did in 1985 when the market crashed. Atari had tons of crap games out which saturated the market and drove interest down, since people weren't getting quality games for the money. Nintendo came in with nothing but strong software (and the D-pad) and managed to sell tons of consoles in an industry that was absolutely dead.

The whole point of developer's kits and scheduling console releases is to allow enough time to have great titles available from the beginning... otherwise, it's not worth owning the console (ahem... PS3). For someone to demand quality titles for their system is for them to demand that the product live up to it's expectations. It's certainly not an unreasonable request for someone to ask Nintendo to take more of their money.

interesting, the wii is doing really well at the moment. How will sony and microsoft handle this. If i were sony i would lower the price. They would lose more money but they would eventually they would get profit. I mean this is what the wii is doing right now. A cheap price means profit.

You should go see Postal when it hits the theaters. You will be mighty surprised to witness what happens to internet critics (or as I call them "hacks") who get a little too big in the ego department. Some much needed humility is dished out in spades. The rest of the movie is also going to be an action-packed thrill ride that's not to be missed. See it everyone or you will regret it. Everyone will be talking about it. I guarantee it.

Nintendo, all money and no games. What, did they not think the Wii would sell? Can't tranlate JP DS Lite games? Start spending N. People over 12 who slipped and bought from you can and will buy more than one game every 6 months.

Or _UweBoll nintendo can just stick that cash in their wallet and at the end of this generation laugh all the way to the bank at microsoft and sony who made million dollar losses rather then profits

  • _UweBoll

    Posted Apr 7, 2007 12:24 am GMT

Nintendo had better make a lot of money and start saving it because in a year or two their games are going to be looking like N64 games compared to the 360 and PS3 games. Maybe they can put some of those profits towards developing an actual next generation machine and not a last generation console with a new controller like the abortion it pooped out this christmas.
