Crytek cracking open new IP

German developer of Crysis beefs up Kiev satellite studio to work on mysterious original project--which might be multiplatform.

Despite a few run-ins with die Polizei, Crytek has been an independent development success story. The Frankfurt, Germany-based shop burst onto the scene in 2004 with Far Cry. Besides being one of the best-reviewed games of the year, the game launched a whole franchise for Ubisoft. It also prompted EA to woo Crytek away with a "strategic partnership" and a publishing deal for its new PC shooter, Crysis, due out later this year.

Crysis has been Crytek's sole official focus for the past several years. However, today, the company announced it is readying an all-new IP, which will be developed at its Kiev branch. According to Crytek, the one-time "satellite office" will now be a full-fledged second studio. It will be dedicated to the new project, which will use the same CryEngine 2 as Crysis.

"Our Kiev studio has been recruiting and growing for the past year and a half," Crytek managing director Faruk Yerli said in a statement. "The highly talented team there has undergone an intensive training period, and in that time they have made an invaluable contribution to our production in Frankfurt."

No platform or genre for the new Crytek game was announced. However, Yerli hinted that it might be something other than a PC shooter. "Now that our CryEngine 2 middleware has reached the point of maturity where it can be used to support both different types and styles of games, and run on multiple platforms, we thought it was the optimum time to begin work on a new project based on our own new and original intellectual property, and elevate the Kiev operation to full studio status." (Emphasis added.)

Though it helped Ubisoft bring Far Cry Instincts to the Xbox and Xbox 360*, Crytek has never officially said it was self-developing a non-PC title. However, it was recruiting PlayStation 3 programmers with cross-platform code development experience last summer.

    I honestly don't see why Cryisis or this new IP would have a problem being developed for the Xbox 360 or PS3. If it is close to or better than the Unreal 3 Engine(which is obviously being used for many console games) then it propertys are probably similar. So developing it for consoles should be fairly simple. Come on Crytek let's see Crysis on consoles!!

    I think in terms of power Crytek's CryEngine outdoes Epic's Unreal Engine in every way! Damn, Crytek should've been the one handling "Cryostasis"!

    That CryEngine 2 could end up being right up there with Unreal Engine 3 in terms of power. If it's anywhere near as friendly for programmers, those guys could end up rich.

    Yup, and it has 2.2 TFLOPS and 8 cores, which is ALOT more than AMD and Intels most powerfull processors. And Lair developer says that it's distance scaling techology is NOT possible on any other processor.

    Yeah but there 8 crappy spes they are not equivalent to a processor at all. Intel duo are far more advanced and whats distance scaling technology??? Long draw distances? im too lazy to look it up

    So the developers of a game thats a Sony exclusive (a rare and wonderful thing these days) praise the hardware that will hopefully be paying their wages... big suprise, and certainly no bias on his part.

    I see Lair and the more I see of it the less I'm bothered, no great shakes from all the stuff I've seen, and if it is HD only as 1 preview mentioned, that'll hardly help its sales.

    As I said before... If the Cell processor were as powerful as its cracked up to be then it would be in PC's... and its not.

    I agree with 2Ksuperior, lets just wait and see. We shouldn't get uptight about something unless it is necessary. A lot is still unknown about what is in or out of the game.

    For me that cell proccesor that PS3 has is not powerful.

    i would prefer a quad core instead of the cell.

    As someone else said here is just a flops monster.

    Plus games today are more graphics intensive u only need a good dualcore and a good GPU so u can kick the PS3 ass.

    Why isnt crysis being made for consoles right now?.

    They just dont have the power or the optimization to do so, but PC...is other case.

    Thats why i like it so much as a gaming plataform...

    Lets hope u PS3 gamers have better optimizations for your games, cos if u dont...good game like crysis will have to wait long time.

    For those of you hypothesizing that this could be Far Cry 2, read the article. It's a new intellectual property, i.e. whole new game, whole new character(s), whole new story, all driven by CryEngine 2. Should be great, but I hope the addition of a second studio speeds up their production. It seems like we've been waiting for Crysis forever.

    @@@TTDog The was not designed to be a General tasks desktop CPU. its was desingned and optimized to media , video decoding , audio etc,,,,

    It can run windows easily , but its realy hard to go to much futher ,since its very hard to develop for the cell and optimizing code for the spes.

    Remenber that the spes are not an equivalent to a processor , they lack branching , have a low chache , and are restrict to a certain and small quantity of code.

    Online is not part of the priorities of booth Nintendo or Sony , its something to add to the console value.

    Sony is doing prety well and offering a great service for something that is free.

    Sony could had a similar or even better online service if they invested more on it , contracting more programmers and making it one of its top priorities like xbox360 with Life.

    i saw some kid down there bashing clan gaming and such on the pc saying that the consoles lead, might i add, the pc started online gaming a decade ago, it pionered every aspect of it, and it's real easy for microsoft to pull a blizzard and wiat for someone else to show them how it's done. the wii and ps3 don't know how to do online, but they don't have a monthly subscription fee like the xbox. but my personal favorite for online is still pc. still has the hardcorest online features, and the greatest servre counts for it's online games, plus there are less racist pre pubescent kids.

    THANK YOU Makaveli-GR. and to add to that.. the PS3 AND the 360 could easily run widows xp maybe even vista if the compatibility is right i mean the psp can run windows 95 lol (yes i know xp is NT based and vista is its own new base and 95 is only dos based...) look the PS3 is already running a moving GUI operating system that is Linux based (the ps2 had a Linux kit) and yes i know Linux is very customizable but having a moving background with smooth enlarge/shrink-blur-transparency effects is hard on a system i mean look at vista's areo its a memory whore ...

    You guys r retarted, now consoles rule, ONLY cause they have good games, and its eaiser to have tour4naments if eveyone ahs the same hardaware and then u cant make your pc act crappy and not draw the tree 100 yards away that yoru enemy is hiding behind. BUT microsoft pushed the 360 early for a reason, its supposed to put sony out of busisness and the pc will put the 360 out of commision, it wotn be outta bisness cause its the same thing. directx10 changes how games are played, on a hardware level, you cant do anything about the fact that when I buy a 360 im just gonna be buying a outdated pc with a souped up processer (setup) and a top of the line AGP card. They arent even makign games that will run more than 2 processors yet, they say in theory its not possible, cause they have to wait for each other. But beyond the facts, its clear to any busisness savvy person microsoft just wanted to kill sony off, and then kill the xbox off, so their pc can rule all, cause we kno you cant game on an apple, so they have no competiton there, thats why they linkt he 360 and xbox live to the pc in sooooo many ways, its suppose to merge technophobes who hate pcs, over to pcs, and then hopefully pc will get some good games. Either way as soon as the first directx 10 game comes out, i dotn think the 360 or ps3 will ever be able to do better than that, keep in mind games are run on gfx cards first, with out the card all the processing power wont help, you cant even emntion ememory either cause the 360 and ps3 DONT HAVE enough memory to even run windows, let alone pc games want gigS of mem, cause they need that, and they need gfx cards, processors come in last place in gaming, ive even noticed hard drives causign more issues in gaming than a processor, my processor says its been maxed out in gaming since 2001-2002 and all ive done is upgrade my hdd , add a small bit of mem, cause i had mroe than the ps3 and 360 years ago in my pc, and of course upgradign the gfx card worked lieka charm, the ONLY thign ive seen a processor matter on is real time strategey,w hen i ammas an army of 50 or so and am going in for the final strike vs another 50

    The Cell processor is only a flops monster. Other than that it is nothing. The truth is in the pudding. PS3 games look like **** compared to any PC games out right now. Look at FEAR for the PS3 and look at COD 3 for the PS3. Both games look like crap. The Cell wasn't designed for gaming.

    Well, since new PC hardware is constantly created and the PS3 hardware remains the same, PC's will obviously surpass it sooner or later. And if consoles ever support this kind of upgrade system, there will be nothing to distinguish them from PC's. The only reason to call the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles and not PC's is that they use proprietary hardware which does not change, which makes them inherently inferior to PC's.

    believe me , in a few years pc processors will be better than ps3 s or 360 s ..... in a few years , pc s will work much much faster than consoles....and graphics wise as well. .. but i will buy a console anyway later this year because i don t wanna miss some exceptional games that for now , won t be a pc verison....

    qmoney88.. yes lol and as a side note, not that the 360 isn't a well built well supported well loved and well invested system it simply doesn't have the capacity to run cryengine 2, it needs a hord of processing space and a massive storage device to hold the software (remember games on consoles prefetch and "load" the software from the disc way more then PC's because most of the material is already installed on the PC, yes i know games install on consoles now but not to the same degree as PC's) and though PC's will have larger processors the the PS3's, the PS3 does have large processing power, more then the 360, and most of the game can be pre-installed on the larger storage capacity of the blu-ray and possibly the blu-ray2 (hideo kojima already said he might have to use the blu-ray2's because he doesnt have enough space... lol) look thought the 360 is good DVD-DL isnt big enough and would you really want a scaled down version of the game i mean look at vengeance...

    "*=Crytek was not involved in the development Wii Far Cry title, Far Cry Vengeance." oh thank god, in other words some studio thought shame was the best reward for far cry's awesomeness, because god forbid a studio bring about a good shooter to the wii and as we know that if we want a good shooter under the far cry brand for the wii we simply cant use crytek.... but on another note i will be keeping tabs on this one because the studio has yet to disappoint.
