100,000 Wiis sold in Australia

Wii fastest to 100,000 unit sales in Australia; Super Paper Mario gets release window.

The Nintendo Wii already has the title of fastest-launch seller of any console released in Australia, and today it added another feather to its cap. Figures from industry tracker GfK Australia show that 100,000 Wiis have now been sold down under since the console's launch on December 7, 2006--the quickest a home console has reached the 100k mark in Australia.

The previous quickest-to-100,000-sales was the Xbox 360. The 360, which was launched in Australia on March 23, 2006, took approximately seven months to reach that milestone. The Wii took six months and two weeks.

With all three next-generation consoles out for months in Australia, the three majors have been busily beating their chests about how successful their individual products have been. Microsoft was the last one to boast, releasing figures earlier this month showing it had sold one million pieces of software in Australia.

And in other Wii news, Nintendo Australia has finally given an approximate date for the local release for Super Paper Mario. The anticipated game is scheduled for release in September this year, although Nintendo has not confirmed a specific date in the month.

Hey Brambler, PS3 is just a PS2 with different games and "better" games with horrible motion sensor. And a PS2 is a PSX with the bugs fixed and again, "better" graphics.
So yeah, the Wii is very different, seen the controller? Wireless? Not a disk Tray...Internet Capabilites...not cube shaped...
So, take your PS3 and shove it! At least 360 fans don't diss every single console that isn't from Microsoft.

Way to go, Nintendo! It's good to see that the Wii is successful. They will continue being successful as long as they keep churning out fun and innovative games.

Some people may call Wii "Gamecube with Motion Sensors" and claim the Wii is not "Next Gen". Who the hell gave you the right to classify what is "next gen" and whats not? The Wii is the revolution of the next Generation consoles, it lacks HD Graphics, but it has superior motion sensor technology that makes it Next-Gen and more fun to play then the other "HD" consoles. Wii is the Elite, can't F with it, kickin ass and taking names. Kicking ass and taking names,

"Brambler: 100,000 gamecubes with motion sensor controls sold in Austrailia! Last-gen rules!"

So as a PS3 fanboy, how does it feel to be beaten senseless in the market by something you though you had crushed? Why don't you crawl back home and go shake your sixaxis, you know, that inferior motion sensing controller on the last place console.

I'm from Australia, and i can't really see the Wii being a success in Australia. In my group of friends, no one has a Wii, no one really even has a next gen console. I got a PS3 a few weeks ago and i was the first person i know to do it. Most of the people i know who have next-gen, invested in an Xbox 360...

September for Paper Mario? About bloody time is all I can say.

It is getting harder to deny the massive appeal of the console. However, while I am one of the console's biggest supporters, there are only so many "b-titles" we can take. The Australian/PAL region has been treated quite poorly in terms of software, despite the fact we are clearly supporting the console.

And I'm still waiting for the response of all those fanboys that says "nintendo is falling" just because the first game charts in AU after the ps3 release were full of those games, WHERE ARE YOU?, n003s.

Good for nintendo, but i'm still waiting for better games, and a ps3 price drop.

NOTE: I don't know why with 20M+ ppl in the country, consoles sell that slow but meh, I supposed that AU is not a gaming country like UK, USA, JAP or MEx. meh.

Porphyrous - Just to add my two cents to third parties complaining about the Wii: My understanding is that third parties are complaining because all of the Must Haves on the system are being developed by Nintendo, and they're having a hard time competing. Does that mean that third parties would prefer that Nintendo STOP making such quality titles? "Well, if you all stop making good games, then people might consider buying our below average releases". I guess I'm having a hard time seeing that side of it. Nintendo has released tools to help third parties develop on the console (such as the motion-learning tool that was posted on Nintedo's page just before the Wii's release), it's obviously the simplest of the systems to code for, I don't get what the complaints are from third parties. If they'd step up to the plate and release some quality titles, they would have nothing to complain about.

I guess I'm just failing to see how Nintendo's ability to consistantly release quality titles could possibly be a bad thing. Somebody explain.

    Jared_Vegeta,

Yes, I do own a Wii. In fact I purchased it on launch day and except for Guitar Hero II, I haven't played my 360 since. There's been some great titles for it such as Zelda, The Godfather, the new Mortal Kombat, re-release of RE4, etc. In fact, I'll admit that I really didn't enjoy Super Paper Mario. I'll also admit there's not a ton of MUST-HAVES, but look at the 360 and PS3. They don't have really any must haves yet either. All 3 systems are still relatively new and all 3 are needing to get some must-have titles out to sell their system or all 3 will be in trouble.

This is not a rip, but someone brings up a very good point, and I want to touch on it again.

rkgambill wrote: "Personally I think Nintendo needs to seriously shift its attention to 3rd party development. Even though they sell systems at an amazing rate, all the big titles are 1st party and already 3rd party developers are beginning to complain."

I understand what you're saying, and this has already been discussed in other articles' comments, and I blogged about it (click on my handle and scroll down a bit to my article "Third Party Follies".

In a way, it's a chicken-or-egg problem. Nintendo itself is one of the finest game publishers in the world, and I don't mean this as a slam on Sony or Microsoft, but I don't think that they are as strong a 1st party publisher as Nintendo. So their consoles need 3rd party support to thrive. On the other hand, if you look at the 3rd party titles out so far on the Wii, many of them are....well.....bad. The perceived weakness in 3rd party support for the GameCube was caused by weak console sales. Publishers go where the money is. Now that Nintendo has rebounded with the Wii, I would expect 3rd party publishing to boom.....as long as the quality is there. There are too many resources available today to gamers for them to end up wasting money on bad games.

And Nintendo *is* working on its third-party support....that's what that whole move of their PR department from Seattle to California was all about.

ERoBB: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition just came out, and it got a really good review. The Godfather: Blackhand Edition and Scarface: The World is Yours have also been reviewed favorably. Hopefully the success of some of these, as well as the lack of success of most of the mini-game collections, will sway publishers. As it is, the situation is slowly improving, with EA Sports updating Madden and Tiger Woods this fall and the addition of NBA Live, and 2K's The Bigs should be out next week, so the gaps in the sports areas are filling in decently.

It'll get there. Mini-games pretty much scream "we figured the Wii would flop so this is what we could rush out to cash in". Just remember to reward publishers who supported the Wii from the beginning, like EA, with your dollars (as long as the quality is there, of course).

By Christmas, we should be knee-deep in quality releases.

dmish82, do you actually have a Wii? I mean, yeah, there are a few good games out, most of them are junk. The Wii is selling because its cheap and different. Sure, its fun the first week you have it, but then it drops off. If only they'd do a follow up on how many people who got Wii's at launch are still playing them now. Unless you want to play Zelda and Paper Mario for like 6 months.
