BlizzCon 07: Wrath of the Lich King demo'd

Second World of Warcraft expansion is unveiled, demonstrated in depth at Blizzard Entertainment's annual massing of MMORPG players in Anaheim.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--It's an exciting opening day at Blizzard's massive fan convention, BlizzCon, where early-morning attendees had to choose between a lineup to play Starcraft II for the first time, and a seat at the first official unveiling of Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion pack for Blizzard's runaway success, World of Warcraft. The expansion's existence was all but confirmed earlier this week after a series of information leaks from all over the Internet, but fans' excitement was as high as ever when Blizzard ran the first trailer for the expansion.

Lead designer Jeff Kaplan, level designers Cory Stockton and Tom Chilton, and producer Lee Sparks have all taken the stage to present a demonstration of Wrath of the Lich King firsthand. The demo will begin in moments, so stay right here to get all the gory details.

[1:08] "Welcome to Northrend!" Kaplan presents the updated map of Azeroth, showing the arctic continent of Northrend, which is roughly half the size of the Eastern Kingdoms.

Wrath of the Lich King

Frank Pierce gives a rundown of World of Warcraft's latest expansion.

[1:09] He promises that while snow zones are certainly cool, Northrend won't be dominated by them--other zones will be there, and we'll see some examples during this demo.

[1:10] The Lich King Arthas is the primary impetus behind going to Northrend, and you'll get to raid and fight against him. Kaplan says he's bad about breaking crowd control, though, so don't group with him.

[1:13] Kaplan goes over the list of bullet-point features for the expansion: level cap raised to 80; the first hero class, the death knight; siege weapons ("because blowing stuff up is cool"); the inscription profession, which will let you heavily modify your weapons and spells, such as adding a knockback effect to a fireball spell (which was met with cheers from the massive crowd).

[1:14] Stocktown now takes the stage to introduce the geographical features of Northrend.

[1:15] Unlike Burning Crusade and its Hellfire Peninsula, Northrend will have two points of entry: Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra. Kaplan goes into the first zone, Howling Fjord.

[1:15] It's not at all snowy--concept art shows lush green forests, large waterfalls, and of course, a massive fjord through the middle of the zone.

[1:16] The zone will feature a new race of 13-foot-tall, vikinglike enemies who are just beginning to feel the call of the Lich King.

[1:16] A quick in-game fly-by video shows a decidedly Nordic-looking village built in a valley on the bank of a river, with a burning airship crashed into one side of a mountain.

[1:18] Now we're seeing Blizzard's internal map showing off the quest areas and dungeons of the zone, though it's too small to make out any real details.

Wrath of the Lich King

Behold, the Lich King emerges.

[1:19] Borean Tundra, on the other hand, will be populated by naga, who are trying to melt the ice in the zone. There will also be some fishing villages scattered throughout.

[1:21] Concept art shows some shoreline statues much like Easter Island's Moai heads. Now an in-game video shows a new orc dungeon, Warsong Hold, as well as a new gnome town. There will also be a new race, the tuskar, though we didn't get to see what they look like.

[1:21] Just north of Howling Fjord is Grizzly Hills, home of the furbolg, who have a stronghold there.

[1:23] Concept art for this zone shows a redwood forest with small amounts of snow at the trees' bases. In-game, the zone looks vaguely reminiscent of the Hinterlands or the Hillsbrad Foothills, but with a more desolate, arctic feel.

[1:23] The name of the furbolg dungeon will be Grizzlemaw.

[1:24] Next is the ominous-sounding Dragonblight, which will have an entrance into Azjol-Nerub, the ruined underground fortress of the arachnid Nerubian race.

[1:25] Dragonblight will feature a new ice shader specifically to bring to life the ice caves we're seeing in the concept art, in which some skeletal dragon remains are entombed.

[1:26] The in-game Dragonblight footage is what we expected to see in Northrend--covered in snow, full of fissures in the land, only a few dead trees scattered here and there.

[1:27] How about a capital city? "This place might look familiar." An image of Dalaran, the wizard city encased in a magical dome since the release of World of Warcraft, appears on the screen to massive applause.

[1:28] But Dalaran will be on the move in the expansion. The Kirin Tor--the wizards' governing body--will move Dalaran to Northrend to take a stand against the Lich King. Players will be able to access the city on foot or via flying mount.

[1:29] Discussion moves to the new death knight hero class. But first, "with the addition of gnome death knights, we'll need a way to stomp those gnome death knights." Topic quickly moves to siege weapons.

[1:30] There will be a new battleground and also one entire new outdoor zone that will contain destructible buildings. You'll gain honor by blowing up buildings. Blowing stuff up is cool.

[1:31] The new battleground will feature matches lasting around 30-45 minutes. Additionally we'll see a new PvP zone called Lake Wintergrass that will act as PvP even on a PvE server. A new arena season with a new map and new gear is also on the way.

[1:32] Sorry, that's Wintergrasp--sounds a lot more imposing.

[1:32] Now they're talking about the death knight in earnest. It will act as both a tank and a DPS class. You can tank with a two-handed weapon or by dual-wielding; "no wussy shields needed here."

[1:33] Death knights will be geared toward bladed, runed weapons like axes and swords, some skull-adorned examples of which we're seeing in concept art. The death knight's relationship to his weapon will be central to the class.

[1:33] Death knights wear plate armor, naturally.

[1:34] The class is a bit more caster-oriented than a regular warrior, using a mix of melee fighting and spells.

[1:35] The death knight is the first hero class, so you won't get to start out with a level one death knight. You'll have to "unlock" the chance to play it, but you won't have to raid to do so.

[1:36] At level 80, you'll be able to do a quest chain similar to an epic-mount quest, which will tie in to the game's lore involving Arthas, and this will let you use the death knight. Once you've done this, you'll start at a relatively high level (possibly somewhere between 55 and 70). You'll get a solid set of starting spells and abilities to "rip stuff up" with right off the bat.

[1:37] These broad hero-class mechanics will allow Blizzard to add more hero classes in the future. "What it boils down to is, your favorite Warcraft III heroes, playable."

[1:38] The death knight uses a unique rune-based resource system to govern his spells and abilities. Three rune types: blood, frost, and unholy, each with an attached color and symbol.

[1:38] You'll have to carve these runes into your weapons anytime outside combat, so you'll have to choose which sort of runes to emphasize in your spec.

[1:39] An example HUD is shown with the character's runes appearing directly under his portrait, showing six total rune slots. These will deplete somewhat like mana as you use your special abilities.

[1:40] Another example--"this is the death knight I don't want to see"--is one that uses six unholy runes and none of the other kinds. Runes are on a cooldown timer, with talents and attributes that will potentially let your runes recharge more quickly.

[1:41] Now the designers turn the session over to Q&A with the rabid fan base.

[1:43] Will there be any new content from levels 1 to 60? Yes, and some changes will be introduced to speed up leveling up to 60 (and possibly even 70).

[1:44] The talent trees will be extended with your leveling, just like in Burning Crusade. The death knight will have three talent trees of its own, as well.

[1:46] Players will have more reasons to revisit old zones, such as a new Caverns of Time instance. New instances in old zones will also show up, similar to Karazhan in Burning Crusade.

[1:48] There will be a new raid zone added to the game via patching before this expansion comes out, and gear from it will last you well into the new expansion. However, high-powered new items will be available to level 70 players just entering Northrend, similar to Burning Crusade's initial quests.

[1:49] You'll get to use the same flying mount in Northrend, but you may have to "de-ice the wings," as Chilton jokingly says.

[1:49] Question about the evolution of rogues--NEXT.

[1:50] The death knight won't be a more powerful class than the existing ones, it will just be different.

[1:53] Daily quests will be added to the game in the new expansion.

[1:55] Will players be able to play all of the hero classes or be limited to one or a handful? It's too early to say. Chilton also states no new character slots will be added, to sizeable booing.

[1:58] Which races can play as a death knight? Currently, all of them.

[1:59] Last question: Will players be able to use flying mounts in the pre-Burning Crusade zones? (Massive cheers.) Unfortunately, it would take too long to retrofit those zones for flying mounts, and the designers would rather spend their time working on new content.

[2:00] The panel ends--we're off to bring you more coverage of BlizzCon, including hands-on impressions with Wrath of the Lich King.

ok so far im not impressed.like why all the races can be death knight?i think there might be only 2 or 4 races that can be death knight(human undead orc dreanai)and only warrior class cuz that will be like starting out as a mage and finishing as a warrior.and another thing.why the f*ck destructible buildings are needed?i mean they will only raise the pc spec requirements so that you only can blow up a toilet or drive a catapult or something like that.and another thing on the death knight.why does every death knight starts out with the same gear?i mean everybody would look just about the same.well maybe the armor wont be a big issue but the weapon will look the goddam same and deal almost the exact damage as the other players weapon.about tanking i agree but about DPS dont get me started on that.sure death knight would be a great tank but a DPS?that will be a mage sticked togheter with a warrior.ok so this like a rant.hate me if you want but this is my opinion.

meh this expansion seems really underwhelming to me. I mean they are introducing a super class that everyone will likely be overpowered, which will cause everyone to play as one. And for those thinking that Blizzard is being all original with its seiges and destructible buildings read about warhammer online and AOC I know for a fact that before WOTLk was announced WAR was already planning the siges and destructible buildings. And besides the overpowered class, all they can add is another ten levels for your character to grind through and an icey continent that is populated by sentient walruses? WTF do walruses have to do with a lich anyway? Sorry i geuss i kinda ranted there.

What's stupid is they're making the death knight class but can't align yourself with Arthas or the scourge. I wander if Blizzard can become any more idiotic than they already are. The really sad thing is I'm still getting this...

I really enjoy that Blizzard continues with the WoW expansions. It's true that this expansion will "terminate" one of the most impressive negative characters in warcraft universe, but let's think about the whole story. There are many other characters that the warcraft history leaves them in shadow, and i'll mention the first two that came in mind: 1. Queen Azshara - after the destruction of the well of eternity only the naga raised, but where is their queen and what are her powers?

    2. Deathwing, the ruler of black dragonflight - now common a ruler of a dragon type imbued with powers by the titans must be more powerful than the lich king.

I will not go over all the powerful figures in the warcraft universe, but if you take some time and read the short history from the WoW official site you'll find many who might be more powerful than Arthas.

And as about locations.... Well Ner'zhul opened portals to other worlds and even went to one of them.... so expansions could be made till the WoW universe will be as big as the real one. lol

As about if it worths? For me it does. I really like the WoW universe and i enjoy playing the game just to discover the small elements of this huge scenario. I'm not a pro player but I'll always enjoy a good PvP or PvE raid. The only thing that bothers me is that i must buy the expansions. Someone before me said that would be good to include the cost of expansion in the monthly fee. I think that would be great. Let's hope Blizzard will reconsider and do that.

To say that a fantasy setting did NOT take a lot of inspiration from LOTR sounds like idiocy to me. If you swear a lot and call everyone who disagrees an utter noob in hopes that it will give your point some standing, it's ignore material.

Still, the fact that a fantasy get influences, subtle or blatantly obvious, doesn't mean it's not a work to be appreciated. Warcraft rocketed while Warhammer stagnated, because Blizzard was much better at aligning themselves with a good market stream both in terms of story and gameplay and in my eyes that doesn't make Blizzard a villain for practically ripping off Warhammer in a number of ways.

What does make Blizzard an object of hatred for me is the fact that they're stomping all over my former favorite franchise to fit in enough content to justify an expansion. At least that's the way I view it...

Imho, a monthly fee slightly higher - say 17.50 instead of 14.95 - to replace the periodic spectacular-but-potentially-troublesome expansion would work fine. Doesn't mean there wouldn't be level cap raising, or bizarre new content, just that they would be implemented slowly but surely, mixing PHAT EPIX with a healthy dose of in-depth lore.

Oh, just great... Tired of hearing all that "looking for a healer" spam? Get ready to hear it even more as everyone and their dog rolls a death knight. As to people saying this will destroy the lore, Blizz destroyed it a long long time ago. I think it's great that Blizz is FINALLY making a new class after 4 freaking years. Seriously... it took FOUR freaking years to come up with a new class?? Yet, I fear they've waited so long that it's going to absolutely destroy the game balance as everyone rerolls a death knight. I can see the conflict now as everyone in raiding guilds are going to fight who is allowed to reroll.

"Plus I really was getting tired of all the 70 epics I worked so hard for. Can't wait for them to be worthless"

Umm, that's what Blizz does every big patch is introduce bigger and better loot. I had a great laugh at a tier 3 warrior right before the burning crusade. He FINALLY had just realized, while we were flying on an airship, that all his hard work would be made pointless in two weeks.

Are they actually serious? Everyone can become a Death Knight? Everyone I've seen already wants to become a Death Knight...

    LOL!!!
Way to break your own game Blizzard
Class roles and character balance? Who needs that when you have the ALMIGHTY DEATH KNIGHT to fight the same trash you've been for the past two years. Maybe this time I can fight a slightly bigger Buzzard or maybe a Troll with THREE horns instead of two. That would be amazing. Plus I really was getting tired of all the 70 epics I worked so hard for. Can't wait for them to be worthless. Oh and please Blizzard, don't change pvp at all. In fact stop rewarding people for it altogether. But if you must keep it, could you add a stat better than resilience? I mean it only makes you impervious to all damage regardless of your class.

I made my chart because I was bored while waiting on 4:50 am (CST) to roll around so I could head off to work. Nothing more really. And I wont claim that my chart is perfect but it gets the general idea across. I also did include the free months for wow which is why the line drops significantly after the first month and after TBC is obtained. The $30.59 is the cost of the game plus the subscription over time. The line itself act similar to a Parabola in that there is a number that it tries to reach but cant. When there is no monthly fee, the line is attempting to reach $0.00. With a monthly fee, it will attempt to reach a number that causes a balance between $0.00 and the costs plus subscription fees. My math is probably skewed due to me not sleeping much in the last 48 hours but the theory is fairly sound. Do with it as you will seeing I mainly post this random nonsense out of boredom.

pseudoshadow11 - your math is confusing. I’ll take your word on $59.98 as a given. For the moment I’ll allow your supposition on $30.59 cost per month after 12 months to stand. Then there are 2 free months you get with each the core and expansion - adding that up for the first year’s expenses and I get $365.88 not $359.19. Now back to your notes on the cost per month, where do you get $30.59 a month after 12 months? Blizz charges me $15 a month subscription for a single account. So my math works out as $209.98 for the first year â€" using your initial expenditure of $59.98 as a base and adding in 10 months at $15 a month. Additional years following that would run $180.00 without further expansions, sum total just under $600 for three years.

Why bother making a useless chart? That's so rediculous. Of course WoW is more expensive than GW... That's a complete no brainer.

The fact you completely ignored however was that WoW0 has TONS more content than GW.

I made a chart comparing the costs of WoW vs GW. This chart assumes that you have bought all three Campaigns for GW. This also assumes that you are paying by the month for WoW and have bought TBC.
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v496/PseudoShadow/Cost.png
    *Note*
The spikes are when additional campaigns or expansions have been acquired. And this also assumes the maximum price that I have found on the internet for the games.

You notice that with WoW, the cost per month initially goes down. This is due to the first month being free. It then quickly goes back up to the original price then surpasses it. The large drop after the acquisition of TBC is due to the free month that you get.

You notice with GW, the cost is always decreasing except when a new campaign is bought but it still falls rather quickly afterwards.

    WoW:
Total Initial costs (Core + Expansion): $59.98
Cost per month after 12 months: $30.59
Initial + Subscription Costs after 12 months: $359.19

    GW:
Total Initial Costs (All Three Campaigns): $149.97
Cost per Month after 12 months: $1.78
Initial + Subscription Costs after 12 months: $149.97

Even though the initial costs are higher for GW, Wow ends up being 2.4 times as costly after a 12 month period. This is one of the bigger reasons I choose GW over WoW. I really enjoy WoW but its costs are pretty prohibited in comparison especially if you go past a year of playing. WoW would cost $1077.57 for three years (excluding new expansions) while GW would still only be that 149.97 after three years (excluding new campaigns and expansions).

I played WoW (it was a gift) and I got BC. Me and my brother share an account so it took a long time to get to 70, but it was fun. I might get this expansion; i might not; it depends on how good it will be. It sounds a lot like a frozen version of Burning Crusade, which is precisely why I didn't spend time raiding and playing Arena in BC; hopefully these hero classes will refresh the way people play

In comment to those that say that Blizzard goes against their own lore I say that they keep in line pretty well with what they established. Some details have been retconned or otherwise changed but it is really minimal in the scope of things. In addition, the Blood Elf paladins are created through additional lore that was introduced in The Burning Crusade. The Blood Elf expedition to Outland captured a Naaru (being of pure holy light) and are tapping it to become paladins. Also, alot of people are complaining about how Blizzard is killing off all the main villains to the series but you do not know if they die or not. Kael'thas survives his battle with players (even broadcasting his survival to all of Shattrath City) revealing that their are future plans to use him. Even when Blizzard released TBC, they said that you do not stop Illidian as much as you just get in his way.

This game is fun and the lore is great but in the end game, its all repetitive raiding the same instances over and over and over. The main problem with these expansions is that while an increase in the level cap is nice, it creates division within the game by limiting way too much content to those that have the expansions and making previous gear obsolete as well as all of the "high-end" instances. I will use Guild Wars as an example. In Guild Wars, we have three separate campaigns which we can play, each campaign with its own quests, missions, and lore. The campaigns themselves do not add massively better equipment then the previous but upgrades them slightly and introduces new types of weapons. With the upcoming Expansion, it does not matter if you have one campaign, or all three campaigns, you can play it regardless since, even though it is considered on the prophecies map, it is in a completely different area thus not limiting it to players who casually play the original game or those that play hardcore over all three campaigns.

I'm sorry, but I just have to laugh at all the hateful comments about WoW and Blizzard that go on here. This is all a prime example of it being the 'in' thing to bash on something that is popular. No one is making read these articles... no one is making you play the game... no one is making you like it... so get over it.

What's even more comical is half the people making hateful comments about the game will be on it tonight for a few hours.

    That looked really lame.
I played WOW for a month, and was so disappointed. Horrible game, made me sad @ Blizzard. All the quests are the same.

However SC2 is going to be great.
