Nintendo's market value Japan's second-highest

Mario Factory's share price to be No. 2 to Toyota on Tokyo Stock Exchange, having more than doubled in 8 months.

The good times continue to roll for Nintendo. In August, the Kyoto, Japan-based publisher retained its monthly sales-leader position for consoles and handhelds in North America, selling a combined tally of 438,000 Wiis in the US and Canada, as well as 434,300 total Nintendo DSs.

The success has significantly buoyed Nintendo's stock price. Since hitting a year low of 28,320 yen (about $247) in January, the company's stock price has followed a fairly consistent climb, which peaked in July at 61,400 yen (about $536). August proved to be a rocky month for Nintendo due to fluctuations in the dollar-to-yen exchange rate. However, the gaming giant's fortunes took a turn earlier this month, rebounding 5.6 percent to 55,100 yen (about $481) after CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets analysts raised Nintendo's stock-price target by 25 percent to 100,000 yen (about $873).

Those projections are thus far proving accurate. Reuters is reporting today that Nintendo's stock price rose 3.1 percent to 59,200 yen (about $517) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The climb secures Nintendo's place as the second-most valued stock for actively traded companies in Japan.

The company's market value stands at 8.39 trillion yen (about $73.1 billion), which surpasses Canon's 8.12 trillion yen (about $70.7 billion) value, yet at the same time significantly lags behind Toyota, which currently stands at 24 trillion yen (about $209 billion).

However, Nintendo isn't likely to hold its number-two position for long. Reuters notes that Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, which is currently suspended from trading as it undergoes a stock split, is currently valued at 11 trillion yen (about $95.8 billion).

If Toyota releases that new fangled AE86 ( or aE if its a Scion) like they are teasing that gap is going to widen big time. Anyway Nintento should be very happy...anyone see where Sony was ranked on that list???

I don't really care how much Nintendo is worth given that I'm a gamer, not a stock investor, but being a long time fan of the company (trace it back to the 8-bit era), I'm really glad to see them on top again.

Well they're obviously doing something right!? Maybe if MS and Sony want to achieve a similar climb in their stock value they may need to emulate the kind of products Nintendo are offering. It makes sense...Nintendo's target consumers are NOT hardcore gamers.

I'd love to say Gameplay is beating Graphics here but i haven't really had a wii game thats any better then what ive played before. Like RE4 is the best game they have and ive played the exactly same thing on Gamecube.

    So Marketing>Gameplay>Graphics.

Ok, Nintendo, I bought your system you're making $50 per console sale on. Now where I might ask, would be my games with kickass gameplay? (Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 3 are the only ones I could recommend for the $50 price tag per game). I'm so board of my Wii it's not even funny. :;(

Nintendo dropped out of this console race by proving that Gameplay is better then Graphics and look it's been proven by the outstanding numbers in Wii sales. If you really wanted a graphically powered HD machine youd better be willing to spend a bit more then $250. If your a less casual and more common or "Hardcore" Gamer, You should've known the Wii wouldnt be enough to make it your primary console hence why I also own a 360. When all is said you just got to ask is in fact gameplay better or more important then Graphics? Some people say yeah, Some people say no. My mother likes the Wii and thats who Nintendo was aiming for, your mother. So protect her, protect your mothers now.

you gotta think. 360 and PS3 are for the more hardcore gamers who care for the graphics and soundtrack and story, etc. etc.etc. The Wii on the other hand is for the more casual gamer. something that is fun for the whole family. they do not care for graphics or such things they want to have fun and jump right into the action. with little story if any. that is why i have a 360 and a wii. when i want sweet story and amazing graphics i spark up my 360. when i want some good ol' wholesome cooking mama fun i run to the wii. that is why you should never limit your possibilities by staying loyal to one brand. choice is what makes this world awesome. Do you think in all reality that Bryers ice cream would be mad if you got some Ben & Jerry's all because you wanted a different chunky yummy flavor? not at all. The only loyalty you should worry about is the loyalty to your video game pallet. So go run get yourself a 360 or PS3, keep your Wii and explore the flavors of the pixelated, cell shaded, and CGI universe; trust me you owe it to yourself.

Thats great and all for Nintendo, but i gotta say. I own a Wii and right now its the only one that i own, (never liked the xbox, and there is NO WAY ON HELL ill buy a $600 system, guess you can say im smart eh), anyway, i gotta say i a little disappointed with the wii, thus far all the games i own are ok and keep my busy, but, i really think that they should have put a little more effort on graphics, i was unimpressed with metroid 3. Right now im seriously considering buying a 360. I like nintendo, but there are other franshises that i like that i know won't be made for the wii because of its graphical shortcommings, RE5, MGS4, FFXIII etc. It would have been nice if they could have made the wii with better graphical power, even if i had to pay $300, as long as they don't charge $600, it would have been fine. So yeah, i like my wii and can't wait for SSBB and fire emblem, but they should have at least shown a little initiative on graphics.

sacatash hit the nail on the head.
Of course, it's inarguable the system did manage to sell tremendously despite a limited library. I personally love my Wii and enjoy a fair number of games. Certainly more at the moment than for my PS3.

Whatever fault is decried with each slice of good news (and this is for all systems), commenters still have to do it in the face of real news and events

A lot of people here are complaining about the lack of games for the Nintendo Wii. Please keep in mind that MOST third party companies have shifted all their major game development mostly for XBOX 360 and PS3 in 2005 and almost ABANDON Nintendo. I remember Nintendo was being 'snobbed' last year by major companies due to its hardware and only Ubisoft is serious in developing for it. Well, fast forward to 2007 and we know that Nintendo is being projected to have 20 million installed user base of Wii consoles by the end of 1st quarter of 2008. These are sold not shipped units. Now that Nintendo cannot be ignored anymore and adding to the disappointment of PS3 sales, the same companies such as EA, Konami, Capcom, Square enix and whole slew of them are flocking to Nintendo's camp to develop games for it. They have just re-SHIFTED their major game development to Nintendo's console if you have not heard. So expect to have great games by 4th quarter of 2008.

Yeah I agree with Liquid. Granted the only reason why I bought a Wii was for Smash Brawl but how about you give me something I can sink my teeth into.. you know aside from Zelda? It's great Nintendo is ontop and doing there thing.. but can it last? Eh who knows, SNES did good but 64 and Gamecube sucked, I guess it's only fair they reach out to the casual gamers.

Ah well 12/03 my Wii will shine again (if I don't sell it off before then)

HiNU theres NTDOY (the adr) and many of you need to understand that this is market cap not their actual assests/earnings! All this really shows is that their marketing has gotten investors to buy stock and that some exec's at the Big N will probably try and cash out while they know their chips are still ahead!

Another thing to look at is their outstanding stock's (how many shares divided into that price) when most companies keep their volume down it allows for a stock price to be well above $120 while the more stock you have the lower the price per share!

And for CLSA to raise Nintendos stock price target by 25% thats pretty liberal considering even if Nintendo doubles their net profit this year thats only like 2-2.5 billion! In many with such tech comps anaylist dont know how to judge their value against comps that actually "make" products such as industrial equip or automotive. This is one reason why Google was so damn hyped then fell flat on its face with analyist expecting $2000 a share and $100k in 17-20 years like Berkshire Hathaway only in less time.

So although nice for Nintendo, this does nothing fo rthe company in terms of creating more content or branching off into other industry as Sony or MSFT have! In all actuality all this means is that many Asian/ASEAN investors are buying into Japans low currency and investing in a kid friendly comp like holding onto GOLD during tha great depression. Once console sales begin to level out due to Wii's limited casual gamer crowd sticking with either Sony or MS, Nintendo will have nothing to keep these investors which happens every time ANY comp gets to much hype in investing and can't sustain consistent potential like Mitsubishi or Toyota (since their Zaibatsu/Conglomerates with many products out in the market)

The biggest reason for Nintendo's success has been the fact that it completly changed how video games are played. They added the next level of interaction in the interactive world that is video games. All gamers know that we really want to join in the game. You can have a photo realistic tennis game too the point where you can see the reflections of the crowds of people in the tears of a defeated player. However...being able to swing the racket is far more realistic then pushing a button. It always will be that way too.

Im really happy that a video game ONLY company ( unlike Sony and Microsoft who are in it for the money pffffft) has reached SECOND in the TSE.
Wow only behind Toyota?? that means they totally raped panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, Nissan, Honda, (I know this is to good to be true, watch somebody prove me wrong, lol) Anyways Im glad im a Nintendo fanboy, ever since I played Super Mario Bros+ Duck Hunt, I will always be a Ninendo fan.

I do agree that the third party support was good but I still think their first party titles are the key to their success. That and the fact that the ds and the wii are such brilliant machines. There is a reason that Nintendo has been around for over 100 years. They know how to survive.
