Nintendo shares soar to record high

The Japan-based company's stock still in an upward spiral, boosted by a report from Goldman Sachs and speculation it would be upping its earnings forecast.

Shares of Nintendo hit a record high today on the Tokyo stock exchange--briefly reaching 64,800 yen ($555) before closing up 2.7 percent at 64,300 yen ($551).

The surge followed a report from Goldman Sachs which compared the Mario Factory to iPod creator Apple, reports Reuters.

Goldman stated that, "We believe Nintendo's talent in creating new markets, evident from the launch of the DS and Wii, could bring it close to the level of Apple, whose high valuations are due in large part to its innovative business model."

Nintendo is Japan's third most valuable company after Toyota Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, and has seen its shares rise and rise as demand for the Wii and DS has continued unabated.

There has also been speculation that the Kyoto-based company will be raising its annual earnings forecast again due to the continued strong sales of software and hardware. It has already raised its forecast once for the 12 months ending March 2008.

    I have to kind of laugh at the "Wii fad" comments. If anything, it's the opposite.

    Those of us who grew up with the 2600 and NES are adults now. We love gaming as much as we ever did (though sometimes I wish more of today's games could return to the simplicity of the old days), but we've got jobs and bills to pay. I don't have the money to just throw down $400 on a system and snatch up 5 games at $60 a pop. Well, I do, but I'm more fiscally responsible than that. I've got a mortgage to pay, and a job that takes up a lot of my time, so I don't have the time to sit there for hours on end playing incredibly complex games. I need something cheap, fun, and that I can pick up and put down whenever I want, something I don't need to devote tons of attention to. I just don't have the TIME to be a hardcore gamer anymore. A lot of my friends are the same way.

    There are more adult gamers than ever, as "the Nintendo generation" has grown up.

    Nope, now is the time to BUY. At least, if you're buying with US dollars.

    The dollar is on a path of steady decline, Japan's yen is possibly the world's most undervalued currency at the moment, and inflation of the dollar means that most of the gains on the stock market in the last couple years aren't really gains... they're just breaking even. The increase of prices reflect a correction due to inflation.

    Nintendo's not going anywhere but up in the next few years. If I were going to buy anything other than an ETF or commodity, Nintendo would be one of the few good buys.

    How can anyone say Wii has no games??? What About Super Paper Mario,Metroid Prime,Mario Strikers Charged,Legend of Zelda Twilight princess,SSBB soon, Mario Kart Thrii not far,Pikmin Thrii no so far,Battalion Wars 2 VERY SOON This MONTH and more!

    J_Wil, it is not a bargain basement system, I remember last year ppl are willing to trade for their Xbox 360 or PS3 just + cash just for a wii, now tell me whats the bargain here.

    Nintendo has hung on well, but I think the Wii is only flying as high as it is because the Wii is cheaper than anything out there. I miss the days when Nintendo was the hands-down best, not just the bargain basement system.

    As far as Wii being a fad - the NES was once dismissed as a "fad", before it sold 40 million units in America.

    Video games themselves were once dismissed as a "fad" - the pet rock of the 1980s. Anyone else remember that one?

    Kudos to Nintendo. They've gotten me excited about video games again for the first time in 4-5 years. Love my DS and Wii.

    So true... Super Mario Bros. is still one of my favorite games and it's graphics are way down this generation. It's more fun to play then some unmentionable games this generation which had amazing graphics.

    I keep hearing everyone bash the Wii about the hardware being just a little better than the Gamecube, and that may be, but there are two points I want to make.

    1) Graphics are not everything. I have seen games with amazing graphics that have stunk, and many games that were amazing without high-end graphics. Gameplay and story will always win over graphics. 2) By not putting a ton of money into the hardware, Nintendo actually makes money when a console sells, not the other way around. Now isn't that a novel concept...making money when a system sells instead of losing hundreds.

    I'm not trying to bash anyone or any of the other systems...I am just sick of the trash talking about the Wii, when the evidence is right there to support otherwise.

    That's good news for the industry. Now that Nintendo is being recognized by third-parties for their success we can (hopefully) see some more support and great games being made, rather than budget priced wiimakes. ( not that all of them are terrible games, some are actually decent - RE4Wii Edition namely )

    the wii rocks and yes it does target a wider demographic than the other 2 systems and i am glad...The reason i am glad is not only do i get my shooters, and soon games like oblivion will be being made on the wii i mean thats a whole new market that nintendo was lacking before but with the success they have jumped on board and are going to start making nintendo games soon which is awesome. On top of that Ghost squad, MOH heroes, Manhunt 2, REUC SSBB, SMG, Power pros baseball(which if you like baseball its whati think to be the best on the market. Its depth is just extroidinary when compared to most other Baseball games. I will also have games like ssbb that my nephews can play with me and i don't have to worry about some 10 year old dropping Fbombs like whoiop. like i do on halo and what not not that halo is a badd game but that is a terrible part about it.. I don't know i am very excited about what the next few months have to offer and even more so the next year it should be one of the bigger years for all 3 systems. PS3 may get their ball rollin since more and more of their focus is shifting from the PS2 to the PS3 and some major titles are getting released maybe not so much before xmas depends i think a lot on drakes fortune, but by march of 2008 i look for a huge game lineup push which will be awesome. I look for a big push from the x360 in late november when Mass effect comes out and that should continue into 2008 pretty well. The nintendo Wii I look to have a huge holiday season. I mean it has the obvious block busters such as SSMB and SMG. But the Zapper has a huge chance to take everyone by strom, and games like Medal of honor heroes and SMG will start off the rush and i think their will be a huge surpise in rygar which is looking awesome right now. I found the PS2 rygar game to be drastically underrated by gamespot not by other critics so much though where it pulled an avg of 8.3 but right now the visuals look amazing especially for a wii game and the innovative controls sound like a lot of fun. also sometime project hammer will sneek out which is cool. Not to mention Dreams comes out whith a lot of hype and is looking to be potentially the top game pre xmas in december to release. Nintendo should also be able to keep their roll going into march with some interensting looking titles along with mario kart getting released by the end of march i am guessing. Any way you look at it its going to be a fun season no matter what system you support support all 3 and youll be in for a ton of gaming.

    @ Stabby - Oh if they said it in the Nintendo Magazine, it must be true!! Right? News flash - People may actually BUY AND SELL STOCKS. Therefore, this news is relevant and important to me.. It has nothing to do with imposing my view over which console is better. Time to WAKE UP buddy, there is more than just a console war going on........

    People care about sales to much, the only ones who lose are the people who spend their time trying to impose their views on which console is better instead of just playing what you like.

    Seriously guys, it is impossible to win a console war. The Wii is selling alot, like the PS2 did so Sony isn't losing since they made plenty last time. There is currently roughly a same amount of Wii and 360 players and regardless on which gain more in the future is irrelevent since both already have established markets and in due time so will Sony this time around.

    I repeat, NO ONE will win, of course some might do better but never win. The market is to large to control... it was even said in an Nintendo magazine.

    How can the Wii from the Mario Factory have bad games? Everyone knows Mario Galaxy and SSBB are coming out. Don't even get me started on virtual console... those classics are amazing! For those who hate "Mario Factory" just replace it with Nintendo in your head.

    But in a way, isn't it ironic that Nintendo's model is cheap and affordable, but Apple's model is "We will make cool new stuff, but you have to pay out your ass to get it."? I don't think it's fair to compare the two. Although they are both innovative, and I like both of them, it's just apples and oranges to me.

    Though you bring up some good points. I think of an example from greatest flaws in marketing. One of the best is when McDonalds said it wasn't in the business of selling hamburgers, they were selling an experience. Well that sounds totally out of the normal for what a fast food restaurant should be. Burger king said it WAS in the business of selling hamburgers and created an entire marketing campaign around this idea. Long story short, they lost TONES of $$, while McDonalds profited. So while they may seem the same the marketing strategies are completely different. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That doesn't stop someone from going to Burger King every now and then and getting a Whopper. So what your are saying is of the 100+ million people who own a PS2 hardly any of them are casual gamers?     I'm 22, I still play Pokemon, and I'm not ashamed to say so because the new DS games are as fun as the originals in my humble opinion.

    Fair enough, good going Nintendo. At least Japan has one good games company, because Sony ain't doing them any favours.

    With this, and the launch of MS's Halo 3, which has been the fastest selling game/most profitable from day 1 game of ALL time...Sony are just gunna die.

    MS and Nintendo have both areas of the market covered. Sony are doomed, thankfully.

    Goldman stated that, " ... DS and Wii, could bring it close to the level of Apple ... ". Yeah... you got that the other way around. Apple products have sucked balls in the past until iPod saved their @sses.
