Resident Evil 4 wows 1M on Wii

Capcom touts worldwide shipment milestone for fourth version of its survival horror hit.

Capcom wants Wii gamers to know that Manhunt 2 isn't the only scary budget-priced game on Nintendo's system this Halloween. Today the publisher announced that Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition has shipped more than 1 million copies worldwide.

According to the industry-tracking NPD Group, 300,000 copies of Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition were sold by US retailers through August at a suggested retail price of $29.99. The title is the fourth version of the game released in the US, which debuted on the GameCube in January 2005 and on the PlayStation 2 nine months later. A long-delayed PC version arrived in US stores this May, followed in June by the Wii edition. As of the end of August, combined sales of all four versions of RE4--which was GameSpot's 2005 Game of the Year--totaled 2.1 million units and $73.9 million in revenue in the US.

Overall, the Resident Evil series has shipped more than 33 million copies since its 1996 debut. That number is sure to rise with the upcoming release of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles on November 13 and the anticipated (but undated) releases of Resident Evil 5 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

"Why? New controls do not make the game better or worse. I'm much more excited for Umbrella Chronicles."

Becuase it repackaged all the content I had in the ps2 version with better visuals (albeit slight) and frankly the new controls are the bomb. I didn't think control could get tighter then what was on the ps2 or cube. Amazingly they do!

Basically this is a repack with new content for gamecube owners and updated graphics for the ps2 owners.

RE4 is by far the best horror adventure game out there. I own the gamecube version and own the Wii version as well. Can't wait to see RE5 though, that game has alot of potential and i'm hoping it will even top RE4 but who knows.

I'm 31 years old and have beat alot of games in my life. I'm disabled, I don't work, and I play alot of video games. I buy every console on the market and only play the best games. RE4 is one of the best games I've played since the SNES. It's up there with the likes of Super Metroid and Zelda ALTTP. RE4 did for 3d gameing what Super Metroid did for 2d gaming.

    @ lamprey:

I think it already DOES sell for $20. Good game to buy if your Wii is sitting begging to get played. I highly recommend this game. Good stroy line, good lenght, good extras, good unlockables, etc. Play this now!

i would be surprised if it didn't end up on the wii i think with REUC coming out on the wii i think they are prolly a little more willing to delay a version to the wii. I mean bard is right as far as having the engine already so it wouldn't be a terribly lengthy process and the amazing controls on the wii would make it my version to get.

Giff1988 the new controls did make the game better drastically...and if you played the game cube version their was a lot of new content that you missed a sub plot game that was actually pretty lengthy.

Bah, I was hoping this was going to flop. Successful ports mean.... more ports and we dont want anymore of those. (Yes I'm looking at you Okami)
The thing that get's me is.... a lot of people that played this game on the PS2 and GameCube went out and rebought this game.

Why? New controls do not make the game better or worse. I'm much more excited for Umbrella Chronicles.

I have a 360, but I would get the wii version of #5, when it comes out for the wii controls as long as its as good as #4 or better. I guess we can expect RE5 for the wii a year later. If they released it this year it would interfere with the sales of Chronicles.

You know, the logistics of them making RE5 on the Wii is pretty feasible. The models would just need to be saved at different phases, in poly count. Save it out as model_wii and then the enhanced versions of model_ps3 or model_xb360 and good to go. As far as creating the assets go, its easy. Since they already have a running engine for RE4, they could easily just use that, sharpen the code a bit, and drop the new scripting in. Pretty standard stuff. Instead of seeing every vein in the zombie's head on the PS3 version, the Wil version will be more of a story/content update than a graphics update from RE4 for Wii. Think How the GTA games were on PS2... they really didnt advance much graphically in succession, the content was changed and improved on. Same engine used. So, in reality, there is no reason for Capcom to leave out the Wii for RE5. The main issue is that the news of the announcement was made in the spring, before the Wii's success was truly known. I seriously think that Wii players will get their wish, to get RE5 released on the Wii.

They would have to GREATLY lower graphical ability and probably take out a lot of stuff for it to fit the Wii
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fine; as long as it plays like RE4, who cares...go away.

I'm noticing a lot of people here posting their wish to see RE5 on the Wii b/c they know RE:UC is gonna suck bad. Sorry Wii owners, ur gonna miss out on RE5. and for those who are like why they aren't going to put RE5 on the Wii, its b/c I'm guessing Capcom wants to make a TRULY NEXT-GEN Resident Evil instead of a rehashed last-gen. Plus, even if they decided to, They would have to GREATLY lower graphical ability and probably take out a lot of stuff for it to fit the Wii. So as I've said before, Its a shame Sole Wii owners will be missing out on a truly awesome RE game.

  • razu_gamer

    Posted Oct 31, 2007 1:15 pm GMT

13 millions Wii's sold worldwide. 1 million RE4's sold. Considering there are 3 earlier versions, this is pretty impressive.

UC should sell beyond 3 million if it genuinly is a good game.

    Posted Oct 31, 2007 12:25 pm GMT

I'm quite surprised It deserves to sell a lot more than that.

I really do hope that we get another similar Resi game on the Wii as whilst Umbrella Chronicles looks fun I would have preffered a more similar approach to the Resi 4 style.

oh course hard core games sell on the wii hard core games sell on every console now "hard core" is vague any more i mean some people thing its not hard core if it doesn't involve blood and decapitation i personally thing hard core is more of how deep a game is. Deeper games are often less for your casual gamer and more for your people who sit down every day and game away. I actually believe it or not don't put halo 3 in my hard core games category and i will explain. I don't play the MP i did play it a bit but not much i went to TF when orange box came out and now i am back to CS. Halo 3's single player is mean to me for casual gamers. If a casual gamer plays the single player on normal which i would assume most of them do that or easy on most games they play they should easily beat halo 3 in less than 8 hours if they are decent which out any real strategy other than use the abundance of ammo and kill things. Their are no boss battles well non that would give a casual gamer an Issue. Hard Core game = Gears of War cuz well lets face it it takes much longer and has higher replay value yeah i mean even it is only a 10 hour game but their are moments in the game that are tough and prolly to tough for a casual gamer to want to play through it. just My opinion but i think hard gamer is used to much since no one knows what makes up a true hard core game their is no real definition to me its a game that a casual gamer prolly wouldn't or couldn't finish either do to length depth or difficulty i mean i know gears only has 2 difficulty levels to start with i would think most casuals would start with the easy one and they would be successful for periods of tiem but would still have issues.

it is a great game so i think that it deserves to be played by all.wii has helped this game become even better because the controls are simply awesome.i can not wait to play umbrella cronicles and i just hope that some day capcom will bring resident evil 5 to wii too.

    Posted Oct 31, 2007 10:16 am GMT

wow, considering Wii has the same unit base as Xbox360, Halo3 sold 4 times of RE4 in just a few days, that's nothing to write home about.

carljohnson3456 i don't know actually from my experience RE games i have found to be short and easy once you figure them out sometimes the puzzles drive me nuts the controls prior to RE4 really drove me nuts. but for the most part they are fairly short games normally made harder by the lack of saving ability not so much the game play itself you just have to be willing to run away a lot since you get not much ammo and its best saved till later in most the games.

Would I sound like a panzy to say the Resident Evil games are too hard to be enjoyed? Nothing worse than feeling overly anxious about that guy coming at you with a chainsaw, running away, no where to go, and then you die and have to do it over again. I beat RE2 on PS1, but I dont think these games are so super appealing anymore. Dead Rising, now, I loved that Zombie game. But as for RE, it drives me crazy. Dont get me wrong, I KNOW everyone loves these games, and I do see what is to love about the games, but to me - they're going to send me to the nut house.

If It had Extra levels or Enemys or A New Plot twist or something, maybe...but for now ill just wait.

RE4 deserves all the accolades it gets. It's like the Super Mario Bros of the modern age...a timeless classic, no matter which version you get. But the Wii version renders the other two completely obsolete.

There's no logical reason why Capcom couldn't put RE5 on the Wii... sure, it wouldn't be as graphically impressive, and some of the tech would be toned down (less enemies or something), but I'd rather play a graphically subdued RE5 with Wii-mote controls than a graphically-phenomenal version with standard dual analog controls.

RE4 plays extremely well on the Wii Played it once at my friend's place and I could easily get a 80-90% accuracy level on it as compared to the 60-70% I get on the PS2. This version of RE4 is prolly the most completed one out of the 3. Kudos to Capcom I'll be getting a Wii eventually(ppl who know me know the reason why hehe), and this game would without a doubt find it's way into my collection...

I haven't played this game in Wii, but I have beaten it 100% on gamecube and storymode 6 times. And then it came with my ps2 so I beat it 3 times there and I got everything but the laser cannon. One of my favorite games to today, I like it on gamecube the best, but it would probably be neat on the wii. I'm looking to get a wii eventually, but now I will enjoy all the AA and AAA titles that are out and coming out for 360 until RE5 comes out. And to add a little fanboy spice...360 ftw!!!

oh and another thing is not a single company has counted the wii out some of them did at the beginning and admitted to that being a huge mistake such as EA, Bioware, bethseda, Take-two(2K), i mean thats just to name a few that have just recently started working on wii titles or have announced that they will make wii titles so guess what nintendo will more thanl ikely be among the top ranks in 3rd party titles over the next 2 years and since nintendo its self is tops right now as far as being a game publisher goes it should be getting real amazing soon. once the wii oblivion engine is done i can't wait to see what games that brings.

  • KingChainz31684

    Posted Oct 31, 2007 7:33 am GMT

First of all i think i can clear up more than half the ignorant comments left in this one statement. yes it has only sold a million copies to this point in its life on the wii, but this is the 4th iteration of the same game so 1 million copies is quite impressive most games remade once or twice that come out a year later let alone over 2 years later are lucky to sell a couple hundred thousand. thats what makes this so impressive that even though i would guess at least 95% of the million people have i would almost gaurentee played the game through at least once on a different console came back to play the game again in its most abosolue and supreme form.
