SouthPeak, Destineer get Unreal Engine 3

Up-and-coming publisher expands license to Epic Games tech; Close Combat: First to Fight studio signs on for unannounced game.

Despite the ongoing legal fight between Epic Games and Silicon Knights over the former's licensor support for Unreal Engine 3, it appears that developers aren't shy about signing on to make games that use the technology behind Gears of War. Destineer Studios announced its license to use UE3 this week, and today SouthPeak Interactive confirmed its new studio license for the engine.

The SouthPeak studio license covers PC and console games on all major platforms for the life of the engine, and will be put to use for the upcoming PlayStation 3 game Monster Madness EX. Destineer's license is for a yet-to-be-announced project.

The two companies' approaches to using the engine share some similarities. Destineer president Peter Tamte said in a statement that, "We are using the Unreal Engine to make a game for a genre in which you would not expect to see it." SouthPeak's first UE3-powered game was Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia, which was singled out by Epic's Cliff Bleszinski at this year's Game Developers Conference as evidence that the tech could be used for more than just "first-person shooters with a lot of metal and stone."

    Um well Crysis is a good example of developers using there own engine and the same as the engine in jericho. Both are great and its good to see that not everyone is just jumpin on the ue3 train. though as people have said, it does save you money if you just use a another engine and the unreal 3 engine is awsome so yea.

    This is not console wars. Please stop. I think the unreal engine looks great. It also runs smooth and from what ive read, is fairly easy to use in the development of any game type. I would love to see some non-fps games using the ut3 engine.

    I'm kinda with ninja-legend here. There are good games coming out for the PS3 that are truly solid, and while they don't give you achievments.... wait, why should that even matter? "Look, I gots a big number next to my name! I'm teh awesome!" .... I'd rather achievements just be, "you did this," not, "you did this... have a cookie!" I do think the 360 has more worth while titles, but then again, it's easier to program for, and it's been on the market for a whole extra year, and while that might not sound like much, it's still something.

    Plus everybody knows the 360 is prone to heat issues, and while I haven't experienced any real problems yet, 2 of my friends have. That's 2 out of 3. The PS3 is the better console, but the 360 (in my opinion) has more, better games. To be honest, I spend more than twice as much time on my 360, but that might change next year, as I'm looking to get Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, Halo Wars, MGS4 and Gow III.

    With the cost of making a game engine taking up more and more of the budget, who can blame them for springing on a established engine. It saves time and money in the long run, and that can only lead to a better production.

    Epic did make the UE3 to be marketed beyond UT.

    PS3 games just get worse and worse. PS3 fanboys, do yourself a favor, and buy a 360. It will save you all the headaces that a PS3 will cause. Plus, the 360 actually has something the PS3 doesn't. THE 360 HAS GOOD GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...............Dude, what are you smoking? I just got COD4 for the ps3 and it is awesome. Assassins creed will be the sh#t. Don't get me wrong, I love my Gears of War, but the ps3 has some outstanding games. What about uncharted?

    I wish more developers would create their own game engine. I do understand the logic, with the costs of creating your own, but it would be nice to see as companies are starting to take full advantage of the hardware. Just look at Call of Duty 4. They built a new game engine and in my opinion it blows everything else away. The best 3 graphically impressive games that used the Unreal Engine in my eyes were Gears, Bioshock, and R6 Vegas. Maybe Infinity Ward should start licensing its game engine out.

    Man, I think I hate Monster Madness more than anyone else. I rented it from Blockbuster and hated it so bad I took it back the next day, but they failed to check it in, and then it got lost in the store for two months and missed inventory like twice. So I got charged $60 for the crappy game. Long story short, I had to make a fuss for the longest time to get my money back, but I eventually did.

    I wouldn't bother with anything SouthPeak releases. Monster Madness's fun wore out quickly, leaving the player with a broken mess of a game. The best advice I give regarding the PS3 version of the game is to save your money to buy something not published by SouthPeak.

    porting games to other console is new work, it can be proved the games can be played on it, i hope it wont disapoint it.

    wow, monster madness was terrible on 360, i wouldnt even consider that title for PS3. If anyone honestly thinks this is a PS3 victory, then check out monster madness battle for suburbia

    Well hopefully one of the improvement of this from the 360 is that it doesn't suck.... I mean this game so bad on the 360 you wouldn't imagine them spending money to port a version to the PS3.... I hope there next game isn't as horrible as the first one....
