Street Fighter IV details trickle out

Capcom confirms next installment of fighting franchise will have 3D graphics, traditional 2D-style gameplay, familiar faces.

When Capcom finally revealed that it was working on Street Fighter IV, it did so with a trailer that suggested plenty but specified nothing. Today the publisher finally set in stone some details of the game.

As suggested by the trailer, Street Fighter IV will feature stylized 3D graphics, but Capcom said that the gameplay will have a "2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes." In further nods to series traditionalists, the game will have the same six-button layout as previous Street Fighter games, as well as familiar faces including Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, and Dhalsim. However, not everything will remain the same; Capcom has said it will introduce new special moves, techniques, locations, and gameplay systems.

Several major details--platforms and a projected release date among them--remain under wraps.

This will not be the first time the Street Fighter series has ventured into the third dimension. Arika developed the Street Fighter EX arcade spin-off in 1996, as well as a handful of sequels and PlayStation ports. However, that spin-off series has been dormant since Street Fighter EX3 debuted alongside the PlayStation 2 in 2000.

One little thing- hope the console versions versus mode includes a random left/right side start for players. To cut out the "you only won cos you got the left side" - trivial, but a common prob easily fixed. Everything else is polished to perfection.

Wow, they look like gorilla's in the screenshots. Even their faces look like monkeys. I'm sad I hope they change how they look in the future, to be more cool and oldschool, not super body type gorilla monkey faces......

Obviously the game will be a little "tekken" like. Since I never liked the 3d style fighting games, they should not forget hardcore gamers, and perhaps add a special mode where the game's engine would act exactly as the old "street fighter champion's edition" style.

well i think its abt time they actually did something like this for i love fighting games and im more a Tekken fan but i like the idea they r doing with this sf.i love the older sf myself but im interested in this one to c if it cuts the musturd with the big boys Tekken.and i think they need to start trying new things with sf like make ur own dude or customise something that be a GOOD idea for starts but i c why they want to keep it simple and not change much from the old sfs.

I hope Capcom will make a "custom-free" gameplay, where players will be free to decide for themselves how much "innovative" their new SF experience will be .Give me the chance to play a VERY old-style SF game with an all-improved graphics and well-balanced gameplay (with LOTS of playable characters) and I'll say Capcom did a very good job... once in a while.

Just seen pics in EDGE mag and i must say it looks great if you imagine sf3 character designs in 3d but with realistic lighting that is more or less what you have and it is 3d looking but 2d playing thank god

I like Street Fighter Alpha series and the Third Strike but.... I prefer the Guilty Gear X series alot more, simply because it's more combo oriented. That is the thing I hate about SF, you hit one and the guy just gets pushed back way too far to even hit a second time... I know that there are 4 to 5 hit combos.... but they are too specific, I like to mix it up and create my own combos! I just hope that they go in that direction with this one, free style combos!!! XD

I like the idea. It makes me think of Capcom's Rival Schools, a 3d fighter with a 2d feel. I knew they would need new moves and specials to push the game along. I just hope they don't change the game completely. Cell shaded would be nice... really nice.

Is it just me, or does the trailer's graphics look cell-shaded? I mean, a cell-shaded Street Fighter game could work. Afterall, SF never was known for its blood and guts like MK.

Alot of people want SF IV to be in 2D. I guess they are stuck in the old SF II days where they still pumped quarters into the machine and freaked out pushing all six buttons. Nostalgic. All these people need to know, including Capcom is stay with the times. True, SF II and its various variations IS still good(maybe the alpha series and Mar vs Cap were better), but for the year 2008 just revamp the old games like they are doing for SSF II T and make SF IV 3D. I guess 2d fans are scared and know that for a fact hadokens are not as useful when you side step and Ryu and Ken will not roost at the top. Hey doing a lot of sensible hard work counts and ANIMATION(this include combat) of the characters is where it matters. Look how Tekken is now. Make it look realistic, fast paced, side step animation should be top notch and hand to hand combat should be like Mar VS Capcom. If they can get combat system tuned, then fireballs can easily be incorporated. This can be done if the all the hype of next gen machine are true.

I guess fans of shooting hadokens from distances will loose their place in 3d as they are stuck SF II HALL OF FAME. If its 2d, might as well make sprite/cell animation with 3d camera flourish and make it like capcom's Okami. Now that's beautiful looking game!!

Awesome, an online Street Fighter sounds great. I'm glad for the new visual approach, and for those of you who get EGM, the addition of the new Saving and Ultra move options sound like they will add even more depth to the game. There's only two things I hope for: 1) That they don't screw it up and 2) That they do something about Chun-Li's enormous thighs.

Yes. Easy to learn, hard to master is exactly what Street Fighter is all about! The game will take place between the 2nd and 3rd games, so a prequel to SFIII and a sequel to SFII story wise, there are 3 screen shots available of gameplay footage from EGM.

Its time for something new. Remaking an old game is one thing. Making a 2D game 3D is good but its been done already. Unless they're going to bring something new to the table they're wasting their energy. I would much rather prefer a new game than another sequel. Street fighter is like a 2D Tekken after all (or maybe Tekken is a 3D Street fighter since Street Fighter came first). Fighting games need to change. Most people like easy to learn fighting games. Look at Smash Bros for example. Theres really no point in long hard to memorize combos. With the number of buttons on today's controllers and processing power of todays consoles you could make simple 2 button single tap combos that do all that fancy fighting with out all the up, down, down, right, left, downright, upright, down, A, B. Sure there is the whole skill thing involved and those World gaming league type people who make Street Fighter into a sport. I think only a fraction of gamers are like that. Most of us like out games simple, pretty and fun.

I actally kind of agree with you. RE4, gold, some of their other games... not so much. Hell, even DMC4 just looks like a nicer DMC 1. Then again, I also though MGS 2 was just a remake of MGS with new characters and environments. Essentially the same game anyway.

I like Megaman, but I only get one if it's truly a good title, and if I'm hungering for some, otherwise I'll just play one of the classic series games.

Viewtiful Joe got milked for everything it was worth, which is too bad, then again Capcom wanted to milk DMC, then realised people really did want a solid title, so now the DMC fans say that there never was a DMC 2.

Hey, Capcom did Project Justice, which was an awesome 3D fighter, maybe SF4 will have some charm like that did.

    This is absolute bull $hit
classic Capcom Lazyness at its Finest
I had such high hopes SF would enter the competitin against DOA4 and Tekken
but its just another product of the Half Ass Mentality Capcom has when they make Video Games.
Give me a fuc&in break, 3D Characters? thats your grand plan to jump into the Next Gen Mix? Put a new coat of paint on a old car?
Capcoms Motto: Were not ready for change!
Resident Evil Had to make 9 fuc&ing games before they change the fuc&in game play and Controls that people have been talking about FOR YEARS! before RE4, and it carried on to other Series like Onimusha 1 and 2 before they finally changed up with 3
They continue to milk there Never Ending supply of Megaman Games
And havent done anything new and inovating in gaming the past 2 Console Generations beyond the First Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 1, and Okami!
They have done Nothing the show they are trying to improve.
Just living by supplying an endless supply of half assed Fan serviced games, for mindless ret@rds who think Japan can do no wrong.
As far as im concerned Capcom can take this game and shove it up there ass for wasting peoples time with this bull $hit

Capcom didn't develop the EX series; Arika did; as for the 2.5d game, if the gameplay is as fast as we all expect from SF, it could be a great game.
