PS3 sells 150k in Australia

Sony's PlayStation 3 hits the 150,000 sales mark down under; PS2 sales double its next-gen stablemate.

Sony had high hopes for PlayStation 3 sales during the holiday rush in Australia, with the company forecasting back in October that it would sell 160,000 units down under by the end of the year. It seems the company has fallen short of its target, but not by much. Latest figures from data trackers GfK Australia show that more than 155,000 PS3s have now been sold in Australia, with 48,000 being snapped up in the last quarter of 2007 alone.

Sony's PS3 sales figures come off the back of the introduction of the lower-priced 40GB model in Australia in October 2007. The A$699.95 model replaced the A$999 60GB model.

The PSP also recorded solid growth, selling 45,000 units in the holiday period. And sales of the last-gen PS2 continues to be strong, with 81,000 units sold during the same period.

Nintendo and Microsoft are yet to officially release their latest console sales figures for Australia in 2007.

48,000 PS3s in the 4th quarter. That means 16,000 PS3s per month, in a country as big as USA. And sony is very proud in its sales in Australlia. LOL.

glad Sony is doing great and glad to see the ps2 is still selling, but if sony added the backward ability in the 40 GB model or just released the 80 GB in Europe or just simply didn't disband the 60 GB model from the market it would do even better

The force is strong with this one, I predict Sony's share here will only continue to spread thanks to their evolving sales tactics.

sony makes a mistake and then further reduces its initial features to bring the cost down to generate sales. fools are those who buy the 40GB PS3 thinking the HDD is the only difference

We are probably the only territory Sony makes a profit from each console sold. Seriously do not understand the pricing here.

reason... the ps3 40gb is $700 in aus, when the 60gb was released in aus it was $1000. so people think that it dropped by $300. i have a 60gb got it in july 2007, leet!. most ppls who are lookign into getting a ps3 dotn relise that there was no price drop its just a cheaper model. but it still did sell alot. ps3 is leet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

I feel sorry for the people wasting their money on the wii, sure it's fun at first but it's a novelty console that does not have the longevity of the ps3 or the 360. 2008 will be a great year for the ps3

To put things in the world-wide perspective the PS3 and the 360 are fairly equal in terms of month-to-month sales with the PS3 gaining ground in Europe, Japan and several other regions. The only countries that the PS3 is struggling in (as far as i know) are the UK, Rep. of Ireland, US and Canada.
Here's the catch though, the 360 has already peaked with the early release of all of it's good exclusives for a long, long time. The ensuing games drought will make a lot of 360 owners think twice about their purchase.

with population of 110 milions, they sure love to play game.

YakisobaCivili: "forgot something too honestly think about if the 360 had the hd drive all together with the system the price would be the same possibly more than the ps3."

Luckilly it doesn't come bundled with that drive, which isn't something that most gamers want anyway.

I'm not really interested in paying hundreds of extra dollars for hardware that I don't want or need.

for such a big country Aus's gaming market is tiny. 10x smaller than UK.

You have to admit Sony had a pretty good first year (considering the terrible launch period and high price tag). Though not spectacular when compared to Nintendo. But the Wii is unique. No other console (that I know of) has had such a phenomenal first year. Props to Sony.

Now that we Australians have bought this thing, at least give us some games. The ps3 shelves are so empty and filled with nothing but the original line-up and some late ports of 360 titles. This is really slow starting and frustrating. Australia already has to put up with the cut down 40gb ps3. I managed to buy mine when the 60gb were still around, when they packed in an extra controller, Resistance and Motor Storm for the same price of the console alone. The 60gb's are still around, but hard to find.

i like all the systems but I like the best blue ray player out their the ps3's and that is the reason its sales are increasing well as well with exclusive title games where as the 360 though its cheaper in ways the hd drive is stand alone ):

More and more people I know are buying PS3's..... Weird that Ps3 sold more units in it's first year than the 360 did, given all the negative attention PS3 sales have recieved for the last year or so.

The problem right now, is alot of people are still put off by the high price tags for it, which is one of the reasons the Wii has sold so well.

The other thing is probably because there hasnt been enough to convince alot of people to move onto the PS3, especially in europe and Australia, with sony getting rid of the 60GB model and leaving people who dont have one yet with the 40GB model which wont play PS2 games.

It took me a year before I decided to get a PS3, and I got a 60GB model. But only because I've finally started seeing more then a handful of games im interested in.

They could do alot better in Europe and Australia, if they gave us the 80GB model, rather then just giving us scraps from the table that is the 40GB model...

No its doing fine state side and in Europe ... the xbox didnt fail even thought it sold NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THIS RATIO in comparison to the PS2 ... sony isnt doing bad ... they just arent in first ....

impressive for Australia., but ultimately the U.S and Europe are where the money is at. Not belittling Australia or Japan for that matter, but where do the big three move millions not thousands in one quarter? Yup you gussed it . I'm glad Sony is doing well down under but it will go down under if it continues to fail in the US and europe.

  • dunnowhathuh

    Posted Jan 17, 2008 9:07 pm GMT

If Sony wants the PS3 to come out on top - drop the price further or give us a better deal, it's that simple. Both the Wii and the 360 have that price advatange. Suffice to say, 150k is still a good number. Should pick up a bit more when stuff like MGS4 and FFXIII come out.

Not surprising-Australia was the only country where the PS2 was dominant for casuals, it will be hard for the Wii to make headway here, especially after the PS3 drops in price (if...)

Id buy one if there was more than uncharted and ratchet that i was personally interested in... soon as FF13 hits however i'll have one by then for sure and maybe... just maybe the price will drop a little more by then and thats always a bonus

A friend told me you should be able to grab one at the airport for cheap... is this true? (like Sydney duty-free shop i think he means?)
