Silent Hill Origins spooks PS2

Previously PSP-exclusive prequel set to haunt Sony's legacy console with tweaked controls.

The Silent Hill series is returning to its old haunting grounds. Konami today announced that the PlayStation Portable's prequel to the franchise--Silent Hill Origins--is being developed for the series' previous home console, the PlayStation 2.

Whenever it launches (Konami did not specify a release window), Silent Hill Origins for the PS2 will follow Travis Grady, a trucker who gets sidetracked in the mist-shrouded town and soon discovers its singularly unnerving atmosphere. As for improvements to the PSP game, Konami has said only that it will update the game's control scheme, particularly for combat situations.

Silent Hill Origins joins a handful of other games to make the PSP-to-PS2 jump, including Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, and Twisted Metal: Head On. For more on Silent Hill Origins, check out GameSpot's review of the PSP original.

    the graphics looked great on the psp, but i don't think it'll look as good on the ps2

    I am tired of hearing all you freaks saying the "now i don't have to get a psp" or "that was the only reason to buy one" or some of the other lame crap you people are spewing. The psp is great, the reasons to get one: high res graphics on a widescreen, best portable ever! Console quality titles on a portable, not hacked small 3 generation ago games like other portables. It plays movies, music, skype, it's the god of portable emulators, you can have atari, nes, snes, genesis, tg16, neo geo, mame, n-64, and ps1 games, on it! It will play all the old ps1 games, You can have complete collections of consoles games on it, ie 1000's of games on one mem stick! IT can play hardware acclerated quake 1, and 2, and doom wolfenstien 3d, duke 3d, and all the dos legacy games. You have internet, internet radio, rss, photo, game sharing, remote play, it works like a console too, as you can hook it up to the tv, so its like a portable game and dvd system.

    The games are great too, mostly teen and mature games, not kiddie games like ds. Its about 4 gens ahead of ds in architecture. It has a faster cpu, and gpu plus more ram then the ps2! Some of the greatest games on it are, final fantasy tactics, star wars rouge squadron, socom , syphon filter, daxter, Dracula x(syphony of night +rondo), silent hill origins, tekken dark res, prince of Persia rival swords, burnout legends, wipeout pure and pulse, metal gear portable ops, medieval resurrection, jeane d'arc, full versions of tomb raider legend and anniversary, new gta lc and vc games,that play and look exactly like the console version. Thats just a snipit of the good games out for it. New games coming out, final fantasy crisis core, god of war chains of Olympus, dungeon explorer, oblivion. There is no other system , i can play favorites like final fantasy 1-9, suikoden 1 and 2, vagrant story, vandal hearts, ogre tactics, and keep most of them on the memory stick, especially now that 4gb is only $40, and 16gb sticks are coming out!

    There are more places to play then on a bus, if that is the only place you play a psp then why did you buy it? I drive, i don't take public transportation, i bring it to work, take play it in the bathroom, on the couch while girl is watching tv, etc.. Silent hill o can should be played with headphones in a dark room. The control scheme is fine, as are most psp control schemes, I don't see why you people need it to be exactly the same as a ps2 controller? The psp is great! As you can see there are a slew of reasons to get one! Its the best gadget purchase i have ever made!

    Dawn_Patrol, maybe your hands are too big, who knows, but I've beaten Silent Hill: Origins at least 11 times now, and I have never had a single cramp, let alone any complaint on how the placement of the analog nub affects gameplay.

    BobtheVila, if it's really that simple, then find the source code, subdivide EVERYTHING in the game, and release/distribute it yourself. Otherwise, just be happy they are doing it at all. ~
    Anyways, there are a lot of moronic comments going towards this game or what Konami has decided to do for it by bringing it to the PS2. Just play the version that is on whatever you own and enjoy it, or don't play it at all and shut up. ~ Personally, I'm insanely happy Konami has decided to do this, as anything to do with Silent Hill I am obsessed with, so the more they release the better...and Silent Hill: Origins is a damn good game.

    I played it and finished it once on the PSP. But thanks to the poor placement of the thumb stick, my thumb gets sore within 20 minutes or so of playing the game. So I have only finished SH:O once. It is good news it is heading to the PS2 as a pad and tv screen will be even better. The PSP version would have been good if the design for the PSP's thumb pad was in a different position, idiots they should have tested it for cramp in the thumb, etc, before releasing the damn machine.

    Well this doesn't really affect me at all because I already own the game and I won't be buying it again, but surely porting some of the more popular titles can't be helping PSP sales? I would have thought Sony would want all the PSP exclusives they can get.

    I wish alot more games would take this trend! I hate gaming on tiny handheld screens, but I like a fair amount of the games coming out, especially stuff from the Final Fantasy and CastleVania series.

    Some things I wish they would do is do a SIMPLE poly subdivide, to make it look like an actual ps2 version. This is nothing to do. Not sure on high rezing the textures, if they have to do it by redoing the texture, it may not be worth it for them.

    However subdividing is the easiest thing ever to do....click....done...save as the ps2 model.

    SH Origins was a great game, even on a small screen. They tell you right at the beginning it is best played in a dark room with earphones on. I played it that way and it was damn scary! I'm hoping maybe they'll add some new stuff to the port and I'll buy it too!

    It probably won't come to ps2, because by 2009 the ps3 will probably have the ps2 BC back inside (knowing sony's mind-changing attitudes).

    The psp version may come to the ps3 as a download like how tekken was a ps3 download and a psp game.
    The psp is a good system, i love the ds, its sony that messed up the psp. Silent Hill 2 is good, but this game is different, its much better than sh3 and especially sh4. But the beauty of a sh game is that each one can be something different.

    The great thing about sh0 is that the town is awesome in it, the enemies are cool and "the butcher" is a great character. It even references pyramid head in it saying "the butcher is like him! the executioner!".

    I can't remember the exact quote, but subtle things like this make the game very awesome for fans.

    SH0 on PSP is a darn good game, and its worth owning the system for. Im a fan, so I would think that. Its a shame that movie converting and memorystick prices are too crazy to imagine.

    Luckily, on play.com i got a sandisk memorystick for £29.99 (a 4gb one). For a movie player and games machine, it isn't half bad.
    But its a shame that this is pretty much the only really good psp game and a handful of others.

    There is nothing like it on handhelds, thats why its cool. And the ps2 version better have more to it than just a port - because THAT would be a waste. Its far too short for a home-game.

    So....why do poeple buy games on psp again? I would never get this system because most of their best games come to PS2 for like 20 bucks. And don't think God of War:CoO won't be be on PS2 by 2009...

    I know! But i think that the problems of the game lay between the PSP itself (unusually..).
    I thought the game was fantastic (the cedar grove sanitarium level wasn't so great though...).

    The only problem with the game was that it was just brought out on the wrong platform. What I mean is - there were a few puzzles here and there which required you to write down number sequences (or have to do some seriously tedious back-tracking and remembering).

    And with the music and sound being such a delight, you literally would be missing half the experience whilst playing it outside or on a bus etc.

    This game is good on the tv-out of the psp slim, but on my tv the screen is still small unless you zoom in (of which it then looks really blocky and blurry).

    This game rocks when you are laying on a couch with some headphones in, or in bed. Its my favourite Silent Hill game next to Silent Hill 1. And im a really huge silent hill nut.
    Everything from the soundtrack to the enemies is great.

    Cedar Grove Sanitarium is an awful level, it takes you a good while to figure out where to go, and i literally didn't play the game for a few days (off and on) because of this level. Once that level was over, i couldn't stop playing it because the story is really well done, and the levels afterwards are a real treat.

    My only thing now is that I hope the ps2 version works on a 60gb ps3 (uk version) and that it has more content than the psp version, perhaps a making of... or SOMETHING. Because after unlocking endings, items and things like that - the 3 hour story campaign gets pretty short in the tooth for a home-console title.

    Either way - everyone needs to play this, nothing quite like it (except silent hill games... of course).

    Damn, first Ratchet & Clank : Size Matters and now this. I only get these games for my PSP because I thought they'd be the only way to play them. If I had known they'd be on PS2 from the beginning, of course I would choose playing them my TV.

    Honestly I just wish the game was better. It's not that it doesn't do anything new but rather it takes steps backwards. It gives the control of the reality shifts into the alternate realm to the player losing a lot of the fear in the first few games and the loss of control you felt when this happened.

    That and honestly. Has melee weapon degredation controls ever been a good idea in a game? There's something wrong about having weapons constantly break.

    While this may not have been a PSP seller for most people, this game combined with a few choice others were enough to convince me to finally get a PSP of my own. Wild Arms XF is the next highly anticipated game for me. I have loved the series from the beginning.

    In regard to there being "no reason to buy a PSP now" I beg to differ. Yes there have been a good amount of PSP to PS2 ports but there are also games that are strictly on the PSP that are well worth playing. If you can go through the games list for the PSP (which shouldn't take too long) and pick out 10 or more games you want to play that aren't available on any other console or portable then you might want to reconsider getting a PSP for those games and future releases.

    Origins is good, dispite the (I wanted to say something else) bad review GS gave it. There were a few glitches, but nothing to **** over, and this game has a nice story that adds something (not sure what) to the SH universe. The graphics for this were also amazing, especially on the PSP. I don't think the PS2 can even pull off these graphics. I won't be getting this, mostly because I already have the game. (and don't own a PS2 )

    i'm not expecting a super great game. i watched the choppy development history and of course saw the ultimate reviews. but i really love the SH universe and i'm sure i'll have a good time playing this game, even if it's not the ultimate best game experience ever. really looking forward to this port. hope it's like 20 bucks.
