Nintendo dominates hardware sales down under in '07

More than half a million DS units sold in 2007 in Australia; more than 300,000 Wiis now sold.

Last year was, by all accounts, a stellar year for Nintendo, with the Japanese gaming giant breaking sales records worldwide. It seems Australians weren't immune to Nintendo's charms in 2007, with figures just released by industry tracker GfK Australia showing Nintendo was well on top in both handheld and console sales.

The Nintendo DS was Australia's best-selling game platform for 2007, with a whopping 509,869 units sold. In December alone, 133,691 DSs were snapped up by consumers. This large 2007 haul brings the DSs overall Australian install base to more than 1 million units.

Not to be outdone by its portable cousin, the Nintendo Wii also broke records in 2007 and has now become the quickest console to reach 300,000 unit sales in Australia. In December alone, 73,318 Wiis were sold in Australia. The Wii has been a strong seller down under since its December 2006 debut and holds the title for fastest to 100,000 sales and 200,000 sales.

By comparison, Sony's PlayStation 3 sold 155,000 units down under since its release in March 2007. While Microsoft has not officially unveiled 2007 sales figures for the Xbox 360, it's estimated that more than 160,000 units were sold last year.

GfK Australia also unveiled that six of 2007's top-selling games in Australia were Nintendo titles: Pokémon Diamond, Brain Training, Pokémon Pearl, More Brain Training, Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends, and Super Mario Galaxy.

the wii is a joke, it's a novelty at most. i am not a fan of it at all. It's for kids, drunks and girls. Real gamers don't waste their time with the wii. it's the modern day hypercolor t-shirt

to me that sounded like a fully unfounded comment, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. and then that little bit at the end where you tried to say something smart and useful about Australia picking up more consoles. They always have had that many consoles going its just that they have a smart thing called outdoor culture which it seems you may be lacking.

You cant really brag about the wii cause my grandma has one. I love the wii but I want more and the only way I'll get more is from the 360/ps3.

Word to Metron. Wii has almost cornered the casual market.

But to be fair GS has been touting all companies sales figures lately.

australia...right....that's such a huge market right.....please..who care's....next they'll be a report saying the Wii has sold 15 units in greenland compared to the 360's 11 units and the PS3 6...anything to continue trying to hype up a machine with boring family games with a few zelda and mario games thrown in for good measure......lets just look at the big picture ok...the States..Europe and Japan....other countries are too far behind to even matter.

have to say though that Australia are improving in their distribuation and take up of games and console's...so hopefully we'll see more of them online.

    @greasemonkey: Exactly!
In New Zealand, Aus is technically 'wafting above' so the statement is completely false for 0.2% of the global population... geez!

Also, I have a PS3, and super mario galaxy + ssbb makes me extremely jelous. But drakes fortune is still pretty awesome...

'mhsdrake - who buys the Wii !?! well done nintendo but i seriously have no idea how you have done it! Not one of the games on the wii makes me (ps3 owner) jealous! Pretty good sales for Sony too...'

I own both a Wii and PS3 and one game that should make any PS3 owner jealous is Super Mario Galaxy. Nothing on PS3 comes close to being as innovative at the moment (And I own both Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank).

However it is good to see Nintendo back in the game so to speak, because in the long run it will only make Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have to make better games with the increased competition.

    Or one can always hope

Ha, technically PS3 did better than 360. According to the estimated sales, Microsoft sold 13,300 360's per month, while Sony sold 15,500 PS3's per month. Wii obviously dominated.

Good to hear, I guess. I don't live in AU or work for Nintendo so it doesn't really matter to me all that much.

BTW, anybody else having trouble locating a DS to purchase? I've been looking for a couple weeks now and can't find even a pink one to buy. So, I do wish if Nintendo was doing so well they keep up with shipments of their consoles.

Meh, until Wii gets a good amount of 3rd party games (which I doubt), games that actually appeal to me, Wii is just nothing more than an overpriced PoS. Plus, the Wiimote doesn't do any justice for precision. Unless, it's a FPS game.
