It looks like Sony's limited holiday offer of a free 40GB PlayStation 3 with every purchase of a new Bravia LCD television in Australia worked wonders for both the TV and gaming sides of the Japanese giant. Sony Computer Entertainment Australia head Michael Ephraim said more than 28,000 PS3s were given away as part of the promotion, which ran from December 21, 2007, to January 28, 2008.

"On the Bravia PS3 offer, we're now up to 28,000-plus--these are audited numbers from Sony. They have taken about a 30 percent market in flat screens for the month of January off the back of that promotion," Ephraim said.

Sony recently released figures showing 155,000 PS3s were sold in Australia last year, but Ephraim says the 28,000 given away as part of the Bravia deal were not included as part of this figure because industry data tracker GfK Australia "doesn't report on a console if it's given away free". This would make the PS3's Australian base more than 180,000 units. By comparison, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has a reported Aussie install base of 306,000 units, while the Nintendo Wii has 300,000 units.

    Ha Ha Sony givin PS3's away!!! dosen't suprise me, how good is the Bravia if they need gimmicks like this to sell their tv. I have a Panasonic 50 inch Plasma and the only Telly I've seen better is the Pioneer which is almost 10 000 dollars dearer. Do some research guys before you buy!!!!!!

    God luck with that imaginary PS3 mate. The free PS3 only comes with an W, X or XBR Full HD Bravia. No free PS3's with the V series.

    @djestar

    Doesn't matter, Sony still makes money off the dozens of movies they'll buy.

    My cousin bought an X series Bravia and has no intention of using the PS3 for anything other than watching BluRay. Everyone that bought a 360 bought it due to games, since PS3 is also a BluRay player I'm wondering what percentage of people bought it with no intention of buying any PS3 games.

    Some of you are really stupid...giving away these PS3 stimulates demand for games AND stimulates TV sales. Also, it provides a heap of free advertising.

    Well you don't know they lost out on the tv......and if they give 28000 people a PS3, not only will they buy games and in turn make money of them, but it might lessen the appeal of a 360 to them.

    Companies don't just give things away if they don't think it will beneift them in the long run.

    "Darth_Slayer Did Sony actually make profits on the "free" consoles?"

    Nope, infact i bought my TV on sale for $2500 instead of the normal $3000. So the lost out on the console and the TV lol.

    I live in Canada and that's how I got my 40GB PS3. I first bought my 60GB around June last year and a few months later I bought another HDTV 50" that came with a PS3 40GB, and a few days ago I bought my third PS3 which is an 80GB which I'm going to trade in for a 160GB.

    Well, at least that's given Sony a good start, give away their consoles for free with an awesome new TV.

    Y' know I was in the market for a Bravia a little while ago, and I would definitely pick up a PS3 if it was free. I doubt I would have ever bought any games for it, or paid a higher price than 'free' for one, but as a hi def player, I wouldn't have complained.

    Thats a pretty nice deal. And since Sony makes most money of software sales, its a winning situation for them in the long run!
