Red Faction III blasts to 360, PS3, PC

THQ confirms Saints Row studio prepping third installment in Mars-set sci-fi series for release before April 2009.

Although publishers typically promote their upcoming games by showing them off at gaming events, arranging for preview coverage, or just blasting out press releases, news of THQ's soon-to-be-resuscitated Red Faction franchise has been emerging primarily from the publisher's investor-focused conference calls.

A return of the franchise--which hasn't been seen since Red Faction II launched on the PC in April of 2003--was first hinted at to investors in a conference call. Weeks later, a new Red Faction was then explicitly mentioned by management in a conference call. Months later, the publisher brought the project up again in a conference call.

Today, THQ CEO Brian Farrell brought up the new Red Faction in yet another conference call. The executive promised that more on the game would be shown in the coming weeks, but he did drop a few additional details today. Referring to it as "Red Faction III" for the first time, Farrell said it is being made by THQ's Volition Studios for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. As one would expect, it will bring back the series' hook of interactive environments, using the power of the new consoles and PCs to incorporate "more exciting destruction technology."

As for when gamers can expect to blast through Red Faction III, THQ is planning the game for its fiscal 2009, which runs from April 2008 through March 2009.

Whats up with making it 3rd Person???? WTF? Just so that the player can experience how the world falls to pieces and sees more? Okay... right? 1st person brings the level of detail higher and makes for more personal battles and explosive romps. Come now.... dont break the FPS formula boys.

Can't wait for this game. i dont yet have a PS3 but plan on buying one with my Tax Return. Although i believe they need to really do a great job, better than red faction 1 and red faction 2 to compete with Resistance Fall Of Man for the PS3. As my best friend owns a PS3 ive had a chance to play this great FPS. now i dont doubt that as long as RF3 has internet play that me and my 2 friends will be on it destroying everyone. but how good we are at the game doesnt determine its greatness.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. I'll admit Rf2 has grown on me a little over the years but I really have only come to enjoy the multiplayer with bots/friends. The rest of the game pretty much sucks balls as you say.

It was a major disappointment to those that survived mine M4.

Back on Mars, Multiplayer no doubt; they wouldn't f-up twice. I loved RF 1 and hope the best for 3. Bringing back Dan Wentz for the music would be great! Still have those free mp3's from the Red Faction site before it shut down.

I'm VERY glad that they are making it more along the lines of the original... The lack of totally destructible environments in the second crippled it significantly so, that it felt like just another boring shooter.

Just face it, Red Faction 2 sucked balls.

So... how is this going to stand up to Fracture? Cause they seem like very similar games to me. Personally, I think Red Faction will have the edge, but we'll see.

the destruction will probly be at least as good as the new battlefield: bad company game which will be similar in that most everything is destructable including walls and floors.

Awesome! The first one was the best and the second one was sort of lacking in destruction but still good. I remember playing multiplayer and blasting the environment to pieces, it was awesome.

I remember spending the entire summer of 2001 playing Red Faction's multiplayer with friends, and drilling tunnels in the maps with the Rocket Launcher. Or putting C4 on the bots' backs. Seeing how far we could push the limits of the engine was fun back in the day.

THQ's Volition Studios Did good with Saints row, even if it was a GTA ripoff, If they take thier time and polish the graphics and game play it just turn out to be a good game.

lol Dreski83 your a Gaming nub.
Volition where behind the original Red Faction 1 + 2
To be quite honest apart from the Deformable Geometry they where pale and weak titles.

I'm not sure... I would assume the game is nothing more than another FPS (which is played out right now) but since its being worked on by Volition Studios, the people who did Saints Row... maybe they might change it up for the better

The Geo-Mod gameplay made the original Red Faction a memorable and an amazing FPS to play. No game back then or even now has attempted such a level of destruction of in-game demolition. And like many people would agree, the sequal Red Faction 2 was abysmal. Nothing like the original but instead with linear gameplay levels. I honestly don't know why they deviated from their original blueprint so much. Let's hope Red Faction 3 is like the first one!
