Nintendo announces Euro dates for Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii

April sees the release of two major Wii games across Europe, complete with dedicated Wii channels.

Wii owners who have been putting off their New Year's resolutions to get fit may finally run out of excuses in April. Nintendo announced today that European gamers will be able to buy Wii Fit, which comes bundled with the Wii Balance Board, from April 25, 2008.

The game is designed to provide a daily fitness programme based around four categories--aerobic exercises, muscle workouts, yoga, and balance games--that contain over 40 individual activities. Up to eight people can track their progress within the software on a single console. It has already sold one million copies in Japan, and you can find out more about the activities in GameSpot's hands-on preview.

The application also adds the Wii Fit Channel to the Wii Menu. Nintendo says that once this is installed, users do not have to insert the disc in order to complete basic tasks such as using the balance board to calculate their Wii Fit Age.

Nintendo has also announced the European launch date for Mario Kart Wii. The game, which will be released in Japan on April 10, will be available throughout the continent the day after on April 11, at the estimated retail price of £39.99 (around $80) for the UK. The game adds 16 new tracks as well as a variety of new vehicles, including bikes. For more information on Mario Kart Wii, see GameSpot's recent preview.

Mario Kart Wii will also include the Mario Kart Channel, which will let players check their ranking from online racing against others, as well as sharing and accessing ghost data. Nintendo says that the channel will open up "a host of new online features," which include "special worldwide events organised by Nintendo." The game will come bundled with a new accessory, the Wii Wheel, but will also support the Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Classic, and GameCube controllers.

Mario Kart better not cost more than $50. Who cares about the cheap piece of plastic. I already have two controllers. Don't rip us off, Nintendo.

Dread to think how much wii fit will cost. But I'm really looking forward to both of these games. They are being released a lot earlier than I expected. funny how in europe we're ending up getting mario kart months before smash bros. when we know heaps about that and near enough nothing about mario kart lolz.

ghost, you obviously havent played need for speed or other racing games on the wii. using it like a steering wheel works perfectly fine, as long as you motor skills are partially developed. and on a side note for matrix man, mario kart does have online racing, so you will most likely be completely satisfied.

1 day after the japanese lot... sounds like progress, already made a note in the diary.

Still online challenge would have been good.

Don't really care about Wii Fit, but I'm kinda scared for Mario Kart Wii. I'm pretty sure you'll have to buy a Classic or Gamecube controller to play it right, since anything with the Wiimote/Nunchuck will probably be awful, and I could say the same for the Wii Wheel. Let's just hope they keep some competitive aspect of the game and don't make it all casual like they planed to when they announced this game last year. I'll keep and open mind, but I'm worried.

$80... just because it comes with a peace of plastic? Lame nintendo, lame. Give me the game without the wheel please or I will be very angry with you.

What about smash bros? Have they even announced that game for the UK yet? What gives? I need SMBB!

  • ChrisJCapel

    Posted Feb 20, 2008 11:03 am GMT

No no no no no. I think you misheard every Wii owner in Europe, Nintendo - we don't want Mario Kart, we want Smash Bros. Please amend this immediately or we will be forced to collectively kick you in the nuts.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssss! At last, the UK and Europe are getting Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit first before the US does. Excellent stuff there.

It's our turn now, because most of the time in the past the UK and Europe had to wait for ages after our counterparts got it first. Ha Ha!
