DS, Wii Fit top Japanese 2007 sales charts

According to figures from Enterbrain, Nintendo excelled in last year's hardware and charts; Japanese games industry growing.

The numbers are in for Japan--and last year was officially Nintendo's year. In figures compiled by Enterbrain, publisher of influential magazine Famitsu, the Mario Factory was on top in both the hardware and software charts during 2007.

For the period of March 26, 2007, through to March 30, 2008, (the Japanese financial year), the Nintendo DS sold 6,343,547 units, followed by fellow handheld the PlayStation Portable with 3,427,971 units. Next was the Nintendo Wii with 3,741,946 units, the PlayStation 3 with 1,197,418 units, and the Xbox 360 with 235,318 units.

In total, the number crunchers reckon, that now adds up to over 22 million DSs out and about, almost 9 million PSPs, 6 million Wiis, 2 million PS3s, and 603,000 Xbox 360s.

As to the games themselves, Wii Fit managed to wrestle itself into top place by selling 1,762,193 copies, despite only being released in Japan on December 1. It was followed by Mario Party DS (1,659,315), Wii Sports (not included in a bundle with the Wii console in Japan, but still selling 1,616,377 units in 2007), Super Smash Bros. Brawl (1,554,852), and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (1,354,447).

The overall games industry sales were up slightly over last year, with hardware and software up 3.8 percent over 2006.

the constant and never ending interest in pokemon never ceases to amaze me, 1.3 million for pokemon mystery ! didn't diamond and pearl sell something ridiculous like 4 or 5 million in japan alone ?
I guess for some kids over there, pokemon is what gaming is all about, they know nothing else, not even Mario galaxy cracked the top 5 !

i just recently bought a Wii, and im impressed. the graphics are OK not HD but there not that bad. what got me open is the way you use the controller and it has internet..i also have an xbox360 i enjoy the variety of games it has, and the controller in my opinion is the best on any platform so far (they did bite off of the Dreamcast controller)..the Wii fit is going to be different and it will give me change of pace when ive been sitting on the couch for hours playing COD4 or Rainbow6 part 2.

For me the best console is the wii, it doesnt has great graphics but it provides you a lot more fun than an Xbox 360. The wii rules, the PS3 is OK and the Xbox 360 sucks!!!!

If your gonna call Ninty the "mario factory" then you should call Microsoft the "halo factory" and Sony the "nothing factory".

Go video games! I'm really rooting for video games. I'm glad to see that video games have swept the list of top 10 best selling video games for the month. I'm such a video games fanboy. They're way better than your non video games. The graphics are better, the gameplay is tighter, they're more innovative, and there is online play. Your non video games are far inferior, which is why I don't own them, nor do many of the Japanese care for them.

I hear that retailers in japan mandated the purchase of wii fit for a purchase of a wii. This can explain why it tops sales chart, yet very little has been reported on the mandate. I think nintendo might be giving some type of kickbacks for the retailers that followed this mandate.

Sorry to say it, but the Japanese have very poor taste in games these days. The only good game on that list is Brawl, end of story. Wii Fit is mediocre and overpriced from all the previews and Japanese reviews that I've seen, Mario Party DS was crap, Wii Sports is, in no way shape or form, worth money at retail as a retail product, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon isn't even from the good Pokemon series.

Wild guess, Japan is a casual market now, which is why the Wii and DS are selling like crazy, and only one of the top five games of that year are any good as far as I'm concerned. The other four are just casual garbage.

maybe the reoson brawl lost was because it was release in febuary in japan, which is 1 month before the end of the fiscal year, whereas the rest of the games were released well earlier

I must submit and go back to being one of $ony's freaky hoes. I ditched my PS2 a few months ago, out of frustration that I wouldn't be able to play its games on the PS3. I also decided to NOT get a PS3. While I'll probably never buy a PS3, for obvious reasons, I've decided to replace my old PS2. Especially seeing as how $ony won't be abandoning it any time soon. I've still got my old memory card, TS2 and Mercenaries so I'll just need to get the core system. I still have a GameCube and some cool games on it (TS:FP, MKeception, SSBM), because I'm definately getting the Wii.

I don't get how they can say the PSP is after the DS in sales and before the Wii, especially considering that the Wii sold 3.7 million compared to the PSP's 3.4 million. Either they accidentally transposed a number somewhere, or this is just bad journalism. I mean yeah, in lifetime sales, the PSP is beating the Wii, but it had a year and a half head start on it, and this article is only about 2007 sales. Anyways, I am also surprised that Mario Galaxy is not up there, but it is possible it has sold around a million, which while still great, is not enough to compete with Smash Bros. Brawl or anything Pokemon. As far as I know, while they do all right over in Japan, the Zelda, Mario, and Metroid series (especially Metroid) are all more popular in the United States than Japan.

PSP isn't over Wii. The Wii has a 300,000 lead. I guess it was typoed in the article. It's close though.

    Wii 3.7M
    PSP 3.4M

@Dualmask People sure do love their handhelds. I know I do. No surprise that the DS is on top, but it is a tad bit surprising that the PSP sold more than the Wii. Then again, maybe not.

It's just phrased in a misleading way. Wii = 3.7 mil, PSP = 3.4 mil. Wii sales > PSP sales. Glad to see both up there, though, as they rock, just settin' the record straight

DualMask, are you referrign to the total sales of the pssp and wii? If so, then it makes sense since the psps has been out way longer.

But if you are referrign to the yearly totals for 2007-2008, then the wii did outsell the psp.
