PS3 GTAIV presales outpace 360 version down under

PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV leading presale numbers in Australia; PS3 GTAIV bundle also confirmed.

When Microsoft announced its multimillion deal with Rockstar for exclusive downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV, many predicted that this would provide a significant incentive for gamers to choose the Xbox 360 version of the game over the PlayStation 3 version. But Australian presale figures seem to be telling a different story, with major retailers contacted by GameSpot AU today saying that the PS3 version was currently in the lead.

A spokeswoman for EB Games Australia--the largest specialty games retailer in the country--told GameSpot AU that the PS3 version of GTAIV was just ahead of the 360 in terms of presales. "We are happy to tell you it's neck and neck, but at the moment, PlayStation 3 is currently in the lead," EB Games Australia brand and public relations manager Debra McGrath said.

The PS3 version was even farther ahead with retailer Gametraders. The company's national marketing manager Chad Polley said, "According to the figures we have at the moment, we're [pre-]selling two PS3 versions for every one 360 unit."

Last night, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia fired back at Microsoft's DLC incentive, finally confirming rumours that there is indeed a PlayStation 3 GTAIV bundle on the way for Australia. The pack comes with a 40GB PS3, one Sixaxis controller, and a copy of the game. If you haven't got a PS3 already, the bundle will be available on April 29, the same day as the game's release, for A$749.95 ($709.44).

    A small fact for the hell of it:

    In this site itself, there is this nifty "Wish list" feature. Looking at the numbers there (at the time of this writing) this is how the split look:

    X360: 15,506 (55.1%)
    PS3: 12,638 (44.9%)

    But this is all just statistics, and as wee all know, there are good lies, bad lies, and statistics. Not sure why many people feel they need to know their version of choice is in the winning side, but it seem to happen a lot. And i say this objectively, I admit myself a bit guilty there but try to avoid it to drag me into arguments. I just know i chose my version due to things that i care about, and hope I have a blast with it. Have fun guys, witch ever version you get! Even if you get the lame version I didn't pick... OK OK its a joke!!!

    No prob. Anyways you're right it doesn't matter, I just got my Official Xbox magazine and they gave GTA IV a 9.5.

    @ JDog0769. Sorry, I shouldn't have been rude. All too often I find people on these posts don't bother to research points they argue and It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I was using vgchartz for the sales on both. They've proven to be fairly reliable in the past.

    darkride66 I have looked up this info and the only place that i found were the PS3 version of DMC4 is outselling the xbox is obviously in Japan. I admit my source isn't exactly up to date so if you have a link that tells me otherwise i will gladly concede my argument. And there's no reason to get all pissy over a comment,

    @vlam. vgchartz is showing the PS3 version with a 110k lead as of last weeks sales. Really doesn't matter, I suppose. Just the fact that it's close with the 360's huge console lead is worth noting.

    Ummm, I just checked and DMC4 apparently sold more on 360 than PS3. I don't know where you got your figures from. The only place where PS3 outsold the 360 in DMC4 copies was Japan, but Japan also doesn't have many 360 owners. Figures are different from different sources, but most of the sources I've seen are claiming that 360 DMC outsold PS3 DMC by approx. 10k copies, so far. I'm not suggesting anything else, though. I just hate it when people pull 'facts' out of their a****. Anyway, GTA4 is gonna rock (on both systems)!

    Um. That the PS3 version has so far outsold the 360 version worldwide? I'm pretty sure that wasn't the argument you were trying to make. Did you bother to actually look into this?

    i dont really care if we austalians get the GTAIV 40GB bundle, but i really want the 80GB MGS4 bundle as it should be only $50-$100 more than the 40GB which is pretty good. hopefully we will get a 80GB bundle because frankly 40GB isnt enough for me

    not too long till GTAIV, cant wait to play it soon hope its good

    sony has better potencial of graphiks and larger games but xbox has a head start and easyer to use software for game developers.

    yo yall need 2 stop cuming at playstation, and from wat sony and rockstar said the ps3 will be getiing downloadable content and the ps3 does have a slight color difference that results in slightly better graphics. also gta 4 on da ps3 is home enabled

    I'm a casual gamer so... (I'm a Sony Fan, but I really enjoy XBOX games...)
    Why all this stupid war over the consoles? "Ohh X360 version will be better""Oh noez! PS3 will roooockkkk" For God's sake, just stick to your own console and don't start stupid wars over it... geez...

    (Yeah I know that from my other post I defended PS3, but look, I like X360 too....)

    Ok.. you can call me Sony fanboy if you want, I won't lie, I love Sony, still... they have their flaws *cof cof* Europe *cof cof*...
    Graphics better in XBOX360? In my opinion they are way better in PS3, but that can be only a matter of personal taste...
    "PS3 can get a decent title that is not multiplatform" ok... have you ever heard before about a game.. oh what is it called? Aw yeah: METAL GEAR SOLID 4. It can have mediocre scores here, but I'm sure Kojima won't disapoint us... It's going to be the grand final.

    Haze? Final Fantasy XIII? God of War? Gran Turismo? Metal Gear Online?
    Ok, on the other side, I won't lie again. I saw movies from Ninja Gaiden 2, and I was like "oh my God... I want to play it..." and I love Gears of War, in fact I was going to buy a Xbox360..
    But then again, it's only a matter of taste...

    Only if you got your 360 before 2007, i play my 360 for hours and it is just fine, but it is from 2006 and i doubt gta would be any better on the PS3 than on the 360.

    I have a 360 and a ps3 and I went for the ps3 version simply because I reckon that gta4 will be very hardware intensive on the console and I think the ps3 can handle it better. My 360 sounds like its gonna explode after playing gears of war for a few hours so I would not like to play gta4 on it for hours on end (like I intend to do) I predict that after gta4 launches there is going to be a lot more RROD complaints with the 360 crowd.

    OMG people stop arguing over "oh the PS3's gonna beat the 360 by far in this game" or "the 360 versions not gonna be as good" or how bout "PS3 is gonna rock always". These games are probably identical to each other any way on both systems. Except for the 360's online might be better. But the graphics for the PS3 and 360 are so close you couldn't tell a difference.

    This is not going to save the PS3, it does not have DLC, and buying a 360 and GTA4 would be more cost-effective and not to mention the good online and good games.

    a good console dose not need to offer exclusive downlaods for games.
    I cant play GTA on xbox and never plan 2, the PS has been in my life ever since i was 6 so PS for life

    As expected, GTA is still strongly associated with the PlayStation brand. It happened with DMC4 as well, I believe, so it's not THAT surprising.

    Actually the 360 just outsold the PS3 last month but not by much. Either way i don't care i will play it on the console i own and i will enjoy it until i grow tired of it.

    I just read it looks like the UK is going the same route. Retailers there are reporting the PS3 version is outselling the 360 version 3:1. I guess we'll find out next month. This is still going to be a monster hit on both systems. With the 360's installed user base in the US there's no way the PS3 version will sell more there.

    ps3 outsells 360 preorders for gta? so what? arguing about this will succumb to nothing. ps3 is great and 360 is great. and you know what's even greater? that both systems will be able to play gta iv! frankly, whether you own one or the other, consider yourself lucky, because this game is going to be big. i mean really big. can't wait to play online with everyone!!

    I pre-ordered the PS3 version cause my x360 has been so sketchy, had to get it repaired 6 times, my ps3 has only a few games, but at least i don't keep losing it for months at a time.... the way I look at it, i want to be playing GTA4 worry free, and not get screwed by having my console RRoD on me at the wrong time, and not get to play an amazing game... that said x360's game catalogue is vastly supperior, but the hardware blows monkey nuts

    This shouldn't surprise anyone. The 360 has really struggled down under. First there was the MS screwing Aussie Gamestops and not taking back rrod's. Then retailers started to openly comment they were thinking of pulling 360's from store shelves due to poor sales (I don't get this. It's selling the same as the PS3 down there, and no one is saying they should pull that console). Japan has moved almost twice as many 360's. Hopefully the 360 will get the same price cut down there that Europe did, otherwise they can kiss that whole continent goodbye.

    im not too surprised really

    only hardcore gamers really own PS3's so when a game that appeals to both hardcore gamers and casual gamers, and yes the first decent game to arrive on the console, it will beat 360 in presales. i also reckon that most of PS3's sales will come thru pre-orders for this game due to its fan base of hardcore gamers

    but still there are alot more 360s kicking around out there so i reckon MS will sell alot more after presales than Sony. plus alot of 360 owners are only casual gamers so they wouldnt have pre-ordered.

    so congratulations Sony for finally heading towards a profit from the PS3 which i can say is only the beginning with such games as MGS4, Tekken 6, GT5 and FFXIII still to come

    weighing it all up, looks like the PS3 might live up to its potential and is finally gonna start competing with the 360 and wii

    things can only get better from here in the gaming industry

    meh. ive already paid for my 360 copy will pick up in a few days. chose not to get it on my bluray3. i really only bought the bluray 3 for its very few exclusives and blu ray.

    PS3 profitable by August, say Nikko Citigroup analysts

    Nikko Citigroup analysts have upgraded their rating on Sony, anticipating that the company will start to break even on the PS3 in August.

    If correct, this would be three months earlier than analysts have previously speculated. In January, Sony's Kaz Hirai said that the company would be shooting for profitability within the fiscal year that began in April.

    According to Endgadget, Sony's break even point will come only when both the cell processor and RSX graphics chip are shrunk to smaller sizes.

    The latest news has caused rumours of a slimmer model PS3 to resurface, although Sony has not commented on such speculation.
