Prototype pushed to 2009

Radical and Sierra "need more time" to deliver on open-world action game's potential.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted May 5, 2008 6:44 pm GMT

Sometimes prototypes don't work quite as well as envisioned. Sometimes they just need a bit more work before they're ready for production.

A representative with Sierra Entertainment today confirmed that to be the case with the company's upcoming open-world action game Prototype. Originally set for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC this fall, the game has been bumped to a nonspecific 2009 release date.

"Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create," the representative said.

Developed by Radical Entertainment (the studio behind The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Scarface: The World is Yours), Prototype casts players as a genetically altered shape-shifter tearing a path of destruction through New York City. Along the way, gamers try to discover who they are and what's behind their mutations, all while fighting off an assortment of military and mutant adversaries.

For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

if they thought they would need more time to get the game finished, they could of a least waited a few more months to tell everyone about it!

It does suck that t's getting pushed back, but its probably for the better. Look at GTA IV, it got pushed back but when it came out, it was worth the wait. I hope it's the same in this case as well

i was really looking forward to it this fall, but I guess I can wait a few more months. Once I'm in scholl I'll most likely forget about it for several months

Perhaps they'll add back in the online that they took out of the game now that it's been delayed almost a year. Probably not though, it is Sierra after all.

Its actualy good that they did this. Ofcourse i would have wanted to play this game sooner but if it isnt finished then they need to just make it as long as it needs. i raise my hat to them for the right thing!

That does suck that the game is getting pushed back but it is for the best. I agree with Avals about not rushing so the game can be what everyone is hoping for because im tired of being disappointed in games that people put too much hype into. So all-in-all good move on Radical Entertainment.

Great move by the makers to extend the production of the game. I don't need another Spider-Man 3 experience (movie and game) where it was rushed for the release date. TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED.

I agree with Dryker. Though it pains me to have to wait longer for this seemingly awesome game (just as we all had to have GTA 4 delayed over and over again, but with great results) they may have seen areas of improvement and hey...better for us, right?

After seeing what GTA brought to the table, I'm sure they saw alot of improvements they could implement. I find this news encouraging. There are already a slew of must-buys coming this year and I'll be playing GTA's open world for months to come.

This sh!t sucks, I've been looking forward to this game being there for those hard winter months stuck inside for hours on end.
Oh well, it's better than them half assing the game for the holiday rush, it shows they care more about quality than pumping out a game designed only to make money.

If it needs more time, then they can take all the time they need to finish it. Perfection is a long process.

it's not about getting a buggy game or not , it's about getting a better and bigger game! I'd rather wait for it to be better and bigger than being cut!

it's simple, they're scared of GTA IV's success, both being sand box and want their game to stand out, which is why the delay!

alberto2045 "omg that game looked so not worth playing"

Are you on crack!? This game looks awsome. The only bad thing I could think of from what I have seen would be the smash the head into the body kill animation for the claw hands (come on they are claws not muscle hands, dumb idea on that kill animation).

I read about ppl saying stuff like "I would rather they push it back than get a buggy game"... Almost all the games I play have some bugs in them, and they don't really ruin the game. So no, I would rather play a playable version of the game with a little hitch every now and then!
>.

I'm actually glad there is a delay. Why you ask?? because it means that they are trying to make sure that it is done right the first time. That when we get to play the game it won't have more bugs than an inner city garbage dump. We'll have a playable and enjoyable experience without having to wait for the first 6 patches to make it playable. I look forward to the finished product ).

Bummer, I don't own a 360 or PS3, but was looking forward to mooching off my friend to play it. Once again the industry delays a title.

As long as it blows everything away in 2009 I don't mind. I can't say the clips i've seen have been that impressive.

the vids weren't all that inspiring to be honest so im glad they're taking it back...........im still really keen to get my hands on this game, ut if they need more tym then go ahead, just don't pull a Duke Nukem on us....nnow they're a couple of my games im looking out 4 that have been pushed to 09, Borderlands, section 8

that adds to the list of 08 games I'm most looking foward to getting moved to 09... Prototype, Borderlands, APB, and the like. Now we will see if Alan Wake joins the lineup of 09 hottness. Not to say this is bad news. I don't mind if a company wants to cook their goodies a little longer. And it is a good year for gaming reguardless thanks to GTA4, MGS4, Fable 2, Too Human, Mercenaries 2, Battlefield BC, Quake Wars, Little Big Planet, The Agency, Boom Blox, Super Mario Sluggers, the soon to be announced (likely) Animal Crossing Wii... these are the main games I want this year... so I'm glad some have moved to next year. My wallet was about to cry.

Not a surprise at all. After reading the preview inGI, I knew it was going to take a while. good thing to, at the time, i was so tired of hearing about "open world/free reign" games that I wasn't even interested. Now it seems interesting.
