Wheelman stalled until 2009

Vin Diesel and Midway Games' open-world crime racer now expected early next year on 360, PS3, and PC.

For a game about a getaway driver, The Wheelman sure has been taking its time to reach the finish line. A collaborative effort of Vin Diesel's Tigon Studios, Midway Games, MTV Films, and Paramount Pictures, Wheelman has suffered a string of flat tires since it was first announced in 2006. At that time, Midway anticipated that the game would arrive during the holiday 2007 season, but it was subsequently delayed last August to a broad 2008 window.

Now, The Wheelman has been bounced out of the driver's seat yet again. Midway has confirmed for GameSpot that the crime racer is now slated to leave the garage sometime during the first part of 2009.

"Midway is committed to developing and publishing high-quality games," the publisher said in a statement. "It is important for us to support the development team with the resources and time needed to make Wheelman a great game experience. Wheelman is now scheduled to ship for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in the first quarter of 2009."

As detailed in GameSpot's recent hands-on experience from this year's E3 2008, Wheelman is an open-world driving game in which players zip through the winding streets of Barcelona, Spain, in an effort to lose the cops and make off with a cache of freshly plundered booty. Featuring the digitized likeness of Vin Diesel (Pitch Black, The Pacifier), the game acts as a forerunner to a film of the same name, which is also due out next year.

    I'll wait until 5 months after its release, then it will probably be a measly 20.00. Mainly because of poor sales, unless they do a lot of improving since their last showing. Too bad though, I kinda like Vin Diesel. Poor Midway. It seems like the only strong title they have is Mortal Kombat.

    Same thing that happen to Chronicles of riddick 2, (which was suppose to come out holiday2007,) will also happen to this game! push back and push back and disappear..... Midway is involved so I doubt this game will give us something new we can really enjoy.

    Ive seen like 10 gameplay videos of this game,, and watching them just got me totally depressed for some reason. The only thing you cant tell from videos online is how good the graphics are in a game. If you had a brain, you can tell if a game looks fun or not just by watching what the character is doing on the screen. Im sorry if you think that this game actually looks interesting, but since I do have a brain, I can make an educated decision on wether or not this game looks like something I could enjoy or not. The veichle combat is so freakin retarded. Doing a 360 spin in slow mo while shooting at cars and doing absolutely no damage at all to the enemies is the worst idea I have ever seen in a video game. I think this could maybe pass as an Xbox Live Arcade game cosidering they dont mind putting crap like this on their. This game is not worth the $65 dollar price tag.

    They should have thought about their reputation before they gave the green light for a game that looks and plays as awful as this game. This game seems as though its made for old people that haven't realized how good next gen games can really be. Vin Diesel should be ashamed of this game, and if I was him, I would make them start all over from scratch so the company that are making this game can even make a profit. They should do a remake or sequal of Chronicles of Riddick.

    Will this be better than GTA 4, probably not. Could this be a good game, has potential and sometimes delays can be good, because it allows them to put allt he creative thought they want into the game and also allows for better fixing of bugs before the game comes out, but when a game is delayed as much as this one was and has...people will expect higher expectations since they took so long, otherwise it can hurt a companies reputation.

    To be honest, I'm quite neutral about this game... But I love the fact that so many of you have said about how "no-one" cares... But your reading this article, and posting a comment about how no-one cares, even though you've read it. :S ... LoL.

    No offense to Vin Deisel but why delay a game really no one cares about, i mean no offense it really doesn't look all that great, nor anything revolutionary, and it doesn't sound interesting at all a crime racing game with an action star, it could be good but I'm not getting my hopes up, I' still shocked by the goodness of the chronicle of riddick game, i don't think another group can pull that off, or take the time to actually try.

    Im not one to really judge a game just by what ive seen off of internet sites and tv. But seriously, this game really doesn't offer anything that you cant find in a used game bin at gamestop. Dont get me wrong, I like Vin Diesel. Hes a really good actor, but this game looks as fun as running through a cornfield backwards with out any pants on.

    im looking forward for this game but they should also make it on the ps2

    I hope that doesn't put it in competition with the new Driver game. Choosing between being Tanner or being Vin Deisel is not a dilemma I want to be faced with.

    Does anyone really care about this game? Is anyone really dissapointed? Saw the trailer at E3 2 or 3 years ago, & since then nothing! I wouldn't be shocked if it gets cancelled. "Yeah, hey!? Everyone!!? That game you haven't head anything about for years - well its getting delayed!! You get that? Anyone? Hellooooo??"

    I think he should get involved with another FPS for new gen consoles. Not a follow up to but something similar to the Chronicles of Riddick for the original xbox. Vin knows gaming supposedly.

    Yep. Sounds like a film is in the works. And what's with a "digitized 'likeness' of Vin"? I'd take this to mean he isn't actually participating in this, just alowing them to use his face.
