Bungie confirms 'three distinct projects' in the pipe

House of Halo says it is at work on a trio of ventures, but will not be sharing details on postponed E3 announcement at next month's Penny Arcade Expo.

Game players and makers alike have voiced their criticism over the Entertainment Software Association's E3 2008 trade show last week. However, none seemed to be quite so disappointed with the outcome of the show as Halo creators Bungie, who abruptly canceled a teaser campaign after Microsoft said it wanted to deliver the studio's next project at "a more dedicated event."

As revealed in a post to the developer's Web site, that event most certainly will not be next month's open-to-the-public Penny Arcade Expo in Bungie's backyard, Seattle, Washington.

"For the record, we have no plans to make any big announcements or huge reveals at PAX this year," said Bungie community manager Brian Jarrard. "While we will have some Halo 3 multiplayer stuff for you to check out, this is not going to be the 'big announcement' many of our fans are clamoring for. Rest assured that when the time is right, we will be making announcements and talking about the stuff we're currently working on."

As for what "stuff" Jarrard is referring to, the Bungie representative said the studio is currently at work on three distinct projects, "some familiar, some not...some on a closer horizon, some quite far off." One of those projects is likely the rumored Master Chief-free, squad-based tactical Halo spin-off, which a source told GameSpot is "a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War" and has a "less cartoony, more bloody, violent, and grim" aesthetic.

The problem with your idea geo-gnome is that if the companies would actually work together they wouldn’t have anyone to compete with (besides Nintendo) and they would get sloppy and start putting out trash and start jacking up prices and that would suck.

what makes u guys think they would go to ps3? they have a great relationship with microsoft and clearly stated when they left that they wouldnt leave. i think bungie made a good move by leaving but. thats only from a buisness standing.. bungie isnt going to ps3 so keep dreaming.

I was promised the "rumored Master Chief-free, squad-based tactical Halo spin-off" was going to be Halo Recon.
Instead, I'm left with a minimally-changed expansion title.

I think halo going to the ps3 would be interesting but what would be cooler would be changing the online play for both consoles and make them compatible with one another this could even lead to an alliance between xbox and ps3 and they could go together to build a super console and make billions i mean sure they would have trouble naming it and stuff like that but then everyone makes more money but thats just wishfull thinking both companies are trying too hard to beat one another

Sorry mikeisaniceguy, but it COULD happen. Bungie are no longer tied to Microsoft Game Studios. And who knows what the future holds?

I personally think it would be a travesty to bring H3 to an outstanding console like the PS3. Don't get me wrong, Halo:CE was an outstanding game, Halo 2's multiplayer was intense. But Halo 3 is money for old rope gentlemen.

i think tactical shooter will be good but bungie should try to sell a new name this time around or just revamp the halo name w/ entierly new charicters and plot just as square-enix does with every final fantasy except dissida and a new marathon sounds good since the old one is so out of date

tactical shooter sounds good, i think they should try things other than halo, give us somthing we havent seen before, something fresh.

tactical shooter is very cool idea. maybe they can have it as you play as a squad of marines in the "same" battles that master chief went through in all three Halos. obviously only certain ones can be used but i think there was enough plus other battles to make a pretty good game.

Halo 4 sounds good, tactical shooter is cool but seems like they are just trying to get the most money out of the halo name as possible and I would rather have them just make a new story line with new characters and everything.

I agree with the prediction of the squad based shooter, I still feel that a new master chief story arc is both inevitable and awesome, and as far as a remake of marathon, I would love them to tie the two universes together.

yea, a halo 3 for the pc would be nice, hopefully they wont wait several years like they did for halo 2, and as for the tactical shooter game would be cool, but how could they do it with out chief?

I think that real life locations could have been added to Halo 3 for multiplayer to keep the interest level up - this still could be done for future games.

Coming from Dundee, Scotland I would have liked to do battle in my own backyard. But I use my location as an example, there is no reason other places throughout Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland or other European cities could be used.

When backdrops have been used - for example Edinburgh in PGR this has gone down well. Gamers want this - to feel they are in the game and can recognise landmarks. Give us new ones - New York (GTA) has been overdone.

Plus, picking less well known areas throughout the UK will result in tourism to see where that well known kill was made.

Just a thought for you Bungie!!

The squad-based tactical Halo is definately one of the projects, and the second could be the Halo movie. Halo Wars is being developed by a different studio, so the third project is most likely a new marathon game or Ghosts of Onyx, either one of which could include Master Chief.

I have high hopes for this "sqaud based tactical Halo spin-off". Instead of 30fps, can Bungie, for once, make it 60fps like COD4. Also I hope the weapons selections are similar or more than COD4. Either way, I hope they use the Unreal Engine on this.

Never understood all the "Halo Bashing" that goes on, sure it isn't the greatest fps out there, Half Life 2 (best there is!), COD4, Crysis, Far Cry, i thought all these were more enjoyable than Halo, but is halo really that bad guys? if you don't like it fair enough but enough with the ridiculously biased views, Halo suffers from its own ridiculous hype and nothing more.. it is still a great game in its own right - just not the king! I'd be quite happy to see more!

As long as these "Three Distinct Projects" use new ground breaking engines frankly I don't give a damn. Since Halo: Combat Evolved was released back in 2002 Bungie has made millions out of the Halo franchise.. It will be interesting to see if they reward their paying fans with another "online friendly clone" or whether they've decided to reward their paying fans with completely new and unique ideas.

I will be inclined to shoot members of bungie if they make another Halo, don't get me wrong I LOVE Halo but their sale point for Halo 3 was that it was the last one AND you KNOW if they make another Halo it's only so they can bleed the title out onto PS3. Halo wars looks uninteresting, of course they have already said they will be making a Halo Prequel where you play as a solider before Master Chief even exsisted. Either way, I'm tired of the Halo Universe honestly. I want to see some new content and story. They're beating Halo to death as their bread and butter escape to wealth, can they do nothing but Halo? Why call them Bungie then, just call them Halo Inc.

i hope its halo 4 cause the ending of halo 3 on legendary is a giveaway that they should make a halo 4

  • Hk47ownz

    Posted Jul 28, 2008 9:48 am GMT

Well, Bungie hasn't given us a terrible game yet (Sure, Halo 3's ending left some to be desired, but admit it, it's still a great game), so I'm sure these three games will be just as good.
And seriously, a squad based game set in the Halo universe sounds pretty sweet. And, quite frankly, WHO GIVES A CRAP if it shares some similarities to Gears and Ghost Recon? They were both good games. Plus, I think the Battle for Earth shown in Halo 3 (well, the end of it) could have been dramatized a lot more, sort of like what they did with the trailers in the "Believe" campaign for Halo 3.
So, to sum it up, I can't wait for any of 'em, even if I don't know exactly what they all are!

  • bertm1975

    Posted Jul 28, 2008 8:38 am GMT

So Halo was a groundbreaking FPS, but the developers now have a game thats a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears? So instead of trying to set the standards they are just following others' successes?

I really hate this "its a cross between" stuff.

  • cmacinnis

I could care less what "Bungie" has got in the pipe. The original Bungie team was the only one that made games with any quality. They just make things so generic now it's hard for all the casual gamers not to buy it. A valid... But devious strategy.
