Capcom powers up $10M quarterly profit

Monster Hunter Freedom 2G's record-breaking sales on PSP offset slumping arcade business; RE5 projected to sell 2.3 million, SFIV 1.7 million.

Nintendo, Sony, and Electronic Arts all released their quarterly reports this week, and while the news was mixed, the common theme among them is that sales were up. Capcom today provided further evidence of the game industry's health today with its own financial report for the three months ended June 30.

The Resident Evil publisher posted revenues of ¥16.35 billion ($151 million), up more than 14 percent from the same quarter the year before. Profits were up more substantially, more than doubling year-over-year to ¥2.38 billion ($22 million), up from ¥1.13 billion ($10 million).

The only game singled out as a particularly strong seller was Monster Hunter Freedom 2G, which Capcom said "drastically increased both sales and profits." The latest addition to Capcom's action-role-playing series released on the PlayStation Portable in Japan in late March, and has already racked up 2.4 million sales. According to the publisher, it is the first Japanese PSP game to hit the 2 million mark.

Despite the game's success, Capcom stuck by its previous fiscal year forecast "due to continuous weak performance of arcade operations business." The publisher doubtlessly hopes to see its arcade business revitalized with the Japanese arcade release of Street Fighter IV, which was set for this summer. The publisher today said it hopes to have the game in arcades "more or less on schedule."

As for the home editions of Street Fighter IV, Capcom projected the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC editions to sell 1.7 million. That's more than the 1.5 million the publisher expects to sell of the new Bionic Commando on the same systems, but significantly less than the 2.3 million copies of Resident Evil 5 it has projected to sell on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Over on the Wii, Capcom expects the recently announced Dead Rising: Chop 'til you Drop to rack up 500,000 in sales. That's significantly less than its last zombie remake for Nintendo's system, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, which notched more than a million sales worldwide.

I don't realy understand why capcom stays away from PC? PC gaming industry is much bigger than others. For example crysis made a big jump just by crysis. Resident evil never comes on pc at the begining but why? Is it a must?

So I guess Capcom doesn't expect very high sales on the Wii from its "core" games..

I like Capcom's new stable of games, but I wish it had stayed closer to its roots and churned out more games like Marvel VS Capcom 3, and a Street Fighter that had the best characters from 2, 3, and the Alpha series rather than just 2's characters + a few newbies.

I also wish they'd tried harder to keep series like Rival Schools/Project Justice alive, but the way they shafted the localized US versions of those games made them a lot less interesting and sellable, so it's no surprise they never got popular.

RE 2 was the best of the series, by far. Two discs, two different stories depending on whom you use first, 4th Survivor etc. etc.

Ive played and finished all resident evils expect Zero and 1. Ive loved all of them. For me Resident evil 5 will be the best game made but still it wont feel as good as RE2 or RE3 where there were zombies and the big monsters. They should remake RE2 and RE3 on much higher graphics (1080p) and then they should make RE6 with zombies not like RE4 and RE5.

@Caer_Death - They provided a patch for the PC version to introduce extra effects.

I agree though, RE5 will be the big seller; everyone loves it all around the world. There are still alot of Street Fighter fans too, so it should sell well. I also think Dead Rising will sell for the Wii, don't know about Bionic Commandos. I think it will be popular in America.

Always good to see Capcom doing well, probably the best third Party developer.

I can't believe they expect anyone to buy that. They need to bring Dead Rising 2 to the table, instead of wasting development resources on a game that is doomed to fail from the start because of the host console's weak hardware.

Good to see. This is one of my favorite japanese developers/publishers. They always seem to have a strong lineup and a lot of their games really push the graphics. Especially the Resident Evil series. I remember when Capcom was a big supporter of the Dreamcast, back when it wasn't getting much 3rd party love, with games like Powerstone and Resident Evil Code Veronica.

I would have throught RE5 would beat the 2 mil mark of the other RE games simply because its the first next gen outing for the series and this would attract more buyers

  • n64nut

Generally speaking, most RE games sell around two million units, give or take. RE2 on the PS1 has the distinction of being the only RE game to sell more than that, at 4 million units. Thats more than all three versions of RE4.

So for Capcom to expect those kind of sales for lifetime is probably accurate. Despite what RE4 fanboys want to think, there aren't enough of them around to sell on the level of games like GTAIV or Halo 3.

  • VenomRitual

    Posted Jul 30, 2008 3:10 pm GMT

they have to mean in the first month. sf 4 and re 5 are gonna sell like crazy. if those are their worldwide projections than they are just being modest

  • Caer_Death

    Posted Jul 30, 2008 3:06 pm GMT

RE4 for the PC was just sad. Aside from being over two years late to the party, it lacked the good graphics of the GC version, using instead the ported PS2 graphics, and as if that weren't bad enough, it lacks the fog effect that was ESSENTIAL to the atmosphere of the game. Not to mention no mouse support, which would've been better than using joysticks for aiming, but still not nearly as good as using the Wii pointer for aiming. Overall, I'm glad they're not wasting their time with a PC version, at least not yet. No Wii version, though, and the slim-to-none chance that it'll come over there in the future, makes me a tad sad. Guess it'll be the 360 version for me...

Capcom is the best publisher in the biz. RE is the best franchise in the biz. Street Fighter is 1 of the best fighting franchises in the biz. The 2.3 mil on RE5 is underestimating that game. 1.7 mil on SF4 is about rite. 500K on Dead Rising is pushing it. All i know is that SF4 & RE5 need 2 hurry up.

SF4 will outsell 1.7M units worldwide within it's release. Mark my words!
RE5 will outsellf 2.3M units worldwide within at least two weeks. (As long as they both have WW simultaneous releases, and great MKT campaign. Capcom needs to stop showcasing these titles, to build even more hanger.)

I seriously can't wait for RE 5 to get here, it is looking so damn good right now I think that Street Fighter IV and RE5 will definitely boost sales and keep Capcom going strong for a while. As for the Dead Rising port, it seems very lackluster and to late at this point but w/e. If it makes them a lot more money so they can put out bigger and better games (SFIV and RE5), I'm cool with it
